Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted makes the roguelike survival format feel more connected to its host game: its runs sit alongside character and upgrade unlocks, and its cosmetic rewards can be used in the campaign and expansion. That is a useful contrast with The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s No Return—not proof that one mode is objectively better, or that either developer borrowed from the other.
What Most Wanted adds to the No Return comparison
The comparison is about a shared shape: choose a character, enter a run, survive escalating combat encounters, and improve your chances as you go. GamingBolt’s review describes Most Wanted as a roguelite single-player mode in the vein of No Return. PlayStation’s own description calls it Sucker Punch’s “spin on a roguelike.” Neither source establishes a direct design lineage between the games. GamingBolt’s review PlayStation’s announcement

The more interesting distinction is integration. In the official description, a Most Wanted run is not the only place its progress matters: players can unlock characters and upgrades beyond the current run, while cosmetics earned in the mode are usable in the main game and Echoes of Sekigahara. That gives the mode a route back into the larger adventure rather than making its rewards solely about another attempt.

Players choose from four characters, each starting with their own weapons and abilities, then take on a bounty whose difficulty increases. A run unfolds through waves and tougher encounters, with perks selected along the way. GamingBolt’s review also describes minibosses and an eventual fight with a member of the Yōtei Six. #1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
That combination gives the mode two kinds of choice. The character sets a starting point through distinct equipment and abilities; perks then modify the run as it develops. Bounty difficulty supplies the escalation. The available descriptions establish those ingredients, but do not provide enough detail to judge how balanced the characters are, how much a particular perk changes a build, or whether one bounty is consistently more rewarding than another.
Where the progression feels more connected
Most Wanted uses Mon to unlock techniques, weapon upgrades, charms, and characters outside the current run. Separately, cosmetics earned in the mode can be used in the campaign and the expansion. The first system makes the mode part of a broader unlock path; the second lets its rewards travel beyond the survival activity. PlayStation’s announcement

- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
That is the strongest basis for calling this approach “smarter”: not that it necessarily has better combat or more replay value, but that the mode’s rewards connect to more of the game. The distinction matters. Character and equipment unlocks are progression; cosmetics are portable rewards. The official description confirms both, but does not quantify how long unlocks take or how much they affect the campaign.

| Comparison point | Most Wanted | No Return |
|---|---|---|
| Run structure | Selectable character and escalating bounty, followed by waves and increasingly challenging encounters; perks are selected along the way. PlayStation announcement. | GamingBolt describes choosing a character, fighting waves, selecting upgrades, facing minibosses, and eventually confronting a Yōtei Six member; this is its review’s comparison, not an official No Return feature description. |
| Progress beyond a run | Mon unlocks techniques, weapon upgrades, charms, and characters beyond the current run. PlayStation announcement. | Not stated in the cited comparison. |
| Character differences | Four selectable characters begin with their own weapons and abilities. PlayStation announcement. | Character selection is mentioned by GamingBolt; further differences are not stated in the cited comparison. |
| Rewards usable elsewhere | Cosmetics earned in the mode can be used in the main game and Echoes of Sekigahara. PlayStation announcement. | Not stated in the cited comparison. |
The table is deliberately asymmetric: the available review comparison is not a full feature breakdown of No Return. It supports the analogy, but not a complete side-by-side verdict about progression, rewards, or balance.

How the mode fits into the Complete Edition
Most Wanted is included in the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, alongside Echoes of Sekigahara. The expansion is a separate narrative addition: it follows Atsu’s past around the Battle of Sekigahara on the mainland and her present-day story in Ezo. In the present, Nagato is wanted by the Vipers, who have taken over the Ashoro Foothills. PlayStation lists new enemy types, heavy weapons, mythic tales, abilities, armor, and cosmetics among the expansion’s additions. PlayStation’s Complete Edition interview
PlayStation’s September 3 announcement said the additions would arrive with patch 2.0 on October 1, 2026, globally, and October 2 in some territories, including parts of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Its October 2 follow-up describes the Complete Edition as available on PS5. Store availability can vary by region, so check the local PlayStation Store for the current edition and upgrade options. What the comparison does—and does not—prove
Most Wanted gives the roguelike format a broader role in Ghost of Yōtei by linking its unlocks and cosmetics to the rest of the game. That makes the experiment feel more integrated, and it gives players a concrete reason to treat a run as more than a self-contained challenge. Whether that is more enjoyable than No Return depends on what a player values; the available descriptions do not establish a universal winner.
Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch Productions’ Senior Communications Manager, called it “our spin on a roguelike” in PlayStation’s September 3, 2026 announcement. That is the studio’s characterization of its mode, not a claim of shared origins with No Return. PlayStation Blog, September 3, 2026
