The iPhone 17 is a substantial hardware step up from the iPhone 12, particularly in display smoothness, cameras, connector and Apple’s battery-life estimate. The price comparison is less straightforward: Apple’s current U.S. listing starts at $929 for 256GB when connecting later, while the iPhone 12 is no longer listed as a current new purchase on the Apple pages checked. A fair price difference requires a live used or refurbished iPhone 12 listing matched for storage, condition and seller terms.
iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 17 specs
Apple’s published specifications show five model-number generations between the A14 Bionic in iPhone 12 and the A19 in iPhone 17. That identifies a newer chip, but it does not establish a measured speed increase; no benchmark comparison is included here.

| Chip | A14 Bionic; six-core CPU, four-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine | A19; six-core CPU, five-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine | A newer chip generation, without a cited benchmark result. |
| Rear cameras | Dual 12MP Main and Ultra Wide | 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide; optical-quality 2x telephoto option and macro photography | Higher-resolution sensors and newer camera features; megapixel counts alone do not determine photo quality. |

What is the iPhone 17 price, and what is the price difference?
On Apple’s U.S. Store page checked for this comparison, the iPhone 17 is listed at $929 for 256GB when connecting to any carrier later, or $899 with eligible carrier activation. The 512GB model is listed at $1,129 when connecting later. The activation discount is conditional; taxes, financing and promotions can also affect checkout cost. Prices and carrier terms can change. See Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 Store listing for current terms.

Apple announced a $799 U.S. starting price for iPhone 17 in September 2025. That launch price included a $30 connectivity discount requiring activation with an eligible carrier, so it should not be treated as the current price. Apple’s announcement is available in the September 9, 2025 iPhone 17 release.
Apple no longer lists iPhone 12 as a current new purchase on the pages checked, and no current used or refurbished iPhone 12 price is established here. That means there is no reliable single dollar difference to quote. Compare actual offers with the same storage capacity and geography, and account for condition, carrier or unlocked status, warranty, return terms and final checkout price. A used iPhone 12 is not directly equivalent to a new iPhone 17.

Which upgrades matter in everyday use?
Display: larger and smoother on iPhone 17
The 6.3-inch iPhone 17 display is only modestly larger than the iPhone 12’s 6.1-inch screen, but ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On support are more noticeable feature differences. Apple also lists higher brightness levels for iPhone 17. The comparison establishes the specifications, not how much brighter or smoother either screen will feel to a particular person.

Cameras: more resolution and added features
The rear setup moves from two 12MP cameras on iPhone 12 to two 48MP Fusion cameras on iPhone 17, with macro photography and an optical-quality 2x telephoto option listed for the newer model. The front camera changes from 12MP TrueDepth to an 18MP Center Stage camera with autofocus. Apple describes the new front camera and rear camera features in its iPhone 17 announcement; those descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent image-quality testing.

Battery estimate: a manufacturer maximum, not a guarantee
Apple rates video playback at up to 17 hours for iPhone 12 and up to 30 hours for iPhone 17. The 13-hour difference is between Apple’s stated maximum estimates. It is not a controlled real-world test, and an older iPhone 12’s current runtime can vary with battery health, settings and usage.
Charging: Lightning to USB-C
iPhone 12 uses Lightning; iPhone 17 uses USB-C and Apple says a USB-C charge cable is included. Existing Lightning cables and accessories may not connect directly, so check what you already own and whether you need a compatible adapter or cable. Both phones support magnetic accessories, but iPhone 17 adds Qi2 support and Apple lists up to 25W for MagSafe and Qi2. Check accessory compatibility rather than assuming an iPhone 12 case will fit the newer model.

- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Is it worth upgrading from iPhone 12 to iPhone 17?
The upgrade is easiest to justify if you specifically want the 120Hz-capable display, newer camera features, USB-C, or a new phone with Apple’s higher video-playback estimate. The case is less clear if your iPhone 12 meets your needs and the main motivation is a precise price saving: the actual value of a used iPhone 12 depends on its condition and current listing, neither of which can be inferred from its original specifications.

- Compare storage capacity before comparing prices.
- For a used iPhone 12, inspect battery condition, device condition, carrier or unlocked status, warranty and return policy.
- For iPhone 17, compare the carrier-activation offer with the price for connecting later, and use the final checkout total.
- Check whether your charging cables, adapters and magnetic accessories suit the phone you plan to buy.
Apple’s September 2025 announcement said trade-in customers could receive $200–$700 in credits for iPhone 13 or newer. That announcement does not establish an iPhone 12 credit. Use Apple’s current trade-in estimate for the specific device rather than assuming a value.
