A “soft reset” usually means restarting your iPad: turn it off, then turn it back on. It does not mean resetting all settings or erasing the device. A normal restart uses the on-screen power slider; a force restart uses buttons when the iPad is frozen or unresponsive.
What a soft reset does on an iPad
A soft reset is an informal name for a power cycle. The iPad shuts down and starts again. Apple’s instructions describe how to restart the device, but do not promise that restarting will fix a particular problem or clear a specific cache.

A normal restart requires the iPad to respond to touch so you can use the power-off slider. If it does not respond, use the force-restart sequence for your model instead.

Will restarting delete anything?
A normal restart is not Apple’s “Erase All Content and Settings” operation. Apple documents that erasing removes content and settings and restores the iPad to factory settings. Separately, “Reset All Settings” returns settings to their defaults while retaining data and media. Neither operation is the same as restarting.

How to restart an iPad that responds
iPad without a Home button
- Press and hold either volume button and the top button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider, then wait about 30 seconds for the iPad to shut down.
- Hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
iPad with a Home button
- Press and hold the top button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider, then wait about 30 seconds for the iPad to shut down.
- Hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
These are Apple’s standard restart steps. Button placement can vary by model; if you are unsure which button to use, check the instructions for your iPad model.
How to force restart a frozen iPad
iPad without a Home button
- Quickly press and release the volume button nearest to the top button.
- Quickly press and release the other volume button.
- Hold the top button until the iPad restarts or the Apple logo appears.
iPad with a Home button
- Hold the top (or side) button and the Home button together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
Apple advises trying a force restart if turning the iPad off and on does not fix the issue. If the iPad still will not turn on or remains unresponsive, follow Apple’s support guidance for the specific problem and model rather than assuming another restart will resolve it.

What if the button locations are unclear?
Use the model-specific instructions if the button layout differs from what you expect. Apple notes that on iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad mini (A17 Pro), the volume buttons are at the top left; for the force-restart sequence, identify the volume button nearest to the top button before starting.
