These are different kinds of devices even though both use M5 chips. Their operating systems and input methods shape what work feels natural. Apple’s announcements identify iPad Pro M5 as an iPad running iPadOS 26 (Apple’s iPad Pro M5 announcement) and MacBook Air M5 as a Mac running macOS Tahoe (Apple’s MacBook Air M5 announcement).

Which is better for your work?
Choose MacBook Air for a conventional laptop workflow
The Air is the more direct fit for long stretches of typing, working with macOS apps, and moving between the laptop display and external monitors. Its keyboard and trackpad are built in, and Apple specifies support for up to two external displays through Thunderbolt 4. If your job relies on a particular desktop app, file-handling pattern, or display arrangement, confirm that it works on macOS as you need before buying.

The iPad Pro is a better match when you want to draw directly on the screen, handwrite notes, mark up documents, or use a touch-first workflow. Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and describes Pencil use for illustration, note-taking, and annotation (Apple iPad Pro). Pencil is an optional accessory, not a requirement for using the iPad.

For frequent typing, the compatible Magic Keyboard adds a keyboard, trackpad, and function row. That makes the iPad more laptop-like, but it remains an iPad running iPadOS; check that your required apps and file workflow are suitable before treating it as a Mac replacement. Apple lists the Magic Keyboard as compatible with iPad Pro M5 on its iPad keyboard compatibility page.
Which is better to travel with?
There is no universal travel winner: the answer depends on what you need to do and what you would otherwise pack. An iPad can suit reading, markup, handwritten notes, and tablet use on the move. If your work also involves extended typing, price and account for the Magic Keyboard you need. Add a Pencil only if handwriting or drawing is part of your routine.

The MacBook Air is the more self-contained choice when your travel work needs a laptop keyboard, trackpad, macOS apps, or a familiar laptop setup. It comes in 13-inch and 15-inch versions; the iPad Pro comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. Consider screen area alongside portability: a smaller device may be easier to carry, while a larger one may be more comfortable for sustained work.

Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for MacBook Air M5. Those are separate Apple-stated figures with different use labels, not a matched comparison against iPad Pro (Apple MacBook Air technical specifications). For iPad Pro M5, Apple says battery life varies by use and configuration; its comparison page’s footnote says the M5 test used preproduction units in August and September 2025 (Apple iPad comparison). These figures do not establish which device lasts longer during your particular trip or workload.

What about performance and the shared M5 chip?
The M5 name does not make iPadOS and macOS interchangeable. Choose based on whether the apps and workflow you need run well on the operating system for that device. Apple publishes workload-specific performance comparisons for each product, but those are not independent, direct tests of iPad Pro M5 against MacBook Air M5.
For example, Apple says iPad Pro M5 delivers up to 3.5× AI performance versus iPad Pro with M4 and up to 5.6× versus iPad Pro with M1, based on Apple’s stated workloads and methods. Apple’s MacBook Air M5 announcement separately claims up to 4× AI task performance versus MacBook Air with M4 and up to 9.5× versus MacBook Air with M1. Neither set of figures is a cross-device comparison, and the results should not be read as a general measure of which device is faster for your work.

How to decide before buying
- Check your essential apps. Confirm that the apps and file-handling features you need are available and practical on iPadOS 26 or macOS Tahoe, depending on the device.
- Choose your main input. If you primarily type and use a pointer, the Air includes both. If you draw or handwrite, check which Apple Pencil model fits your iPad Pro needs; add a Magic Keyboard only if you want laptop-style typing and trackpad input.
- Map your display setup. If you regularly connect to monitors, the Air explicitly supports up to two external displays over Thunderbolt 4. Verify the exact iPad model and current iPadOS support for your intended arrangement.
- Price the complete travel kit in your region. Compare the current price of the device configuration you want with any iPad keyboard or Pencil you will actually use. Check local availability, configuration, and—if considering cellular iPad service—carrier support.
Verdict
For most people who mean “work” in the traditional laptop sense—typing, macOS apps, and connecting to external displays—the MacBook Air M5 is the safer fit. For work built around touch, drawing, handwriting, or annotation, the iPad Pro M5 is the more natural tool, provided iPadOS supports the apps and files your work requires. For travel, choose the setup that covers your tasks with the accessories you are willing to carry.
