For multitasking, use the separate controls in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures: iPadOS 26 offers Windowed Apps, while Stage Manager availability depends on the exact iPad mini model. These settings solve different problems, so change only what you need.
Adjust brightness for your reading conditions
Use Control Center to make a quick brightness adjustment, or open Settings > Display & Brightness and move the brightness slider. There is no universal ideal level; adjust it for the room and the content you are viewing. Apple notes that dimming the screen extends battery life.

To let iPad adapt brightness to ambient light, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness. The iPad uses its ambient light sensor for this adjustment. Apple warns that turning Auto-Brightness off may increase power consumption. Apple’s brightness and color instructions cover the setting locations and behavior.
Choose the appearance controls that address what bothers you
Dark Mode, Night Shift, and True Tone change different aspects of the display. Try them individually while reading in your usual lighting rather than treating them as interchangeable comfort switches.

Use accessibility display controls for more targeted changes
If ordinary brightness and appearance options are not enough, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Select controls based on the change you want:

- Increase Contrast increases contrast between interface elements and backgrounds.
- Reduce Transparency makes some transparent or blurred backgrounds opaque.
- Smart Invert reverses colors except in images; Classic Invert reverses all screen colors.
- Color Filters can apply grayscale, color adjustments, or a tint. Apple notes that filters can change how images and video look.
- Differentiate Without Color and On/Off Labels provide alternatives to cues that rely on color alone.
Apple explains these options in its guide to changing display colors. Since filters and inversion can affect content appearance, check images and video after enabling them.

Choose Windowed Apps or Stage Manager for multitasking
In iPadOS 26, the multitasking choice is in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures. Windowed Apps lets you move and resize app windows, including arranging two apps side by side. Stage Manager is a separate option, with overlapping resizable windows and app groups. Neither mode is established as universally faster or better; choose according to the layout you want and confirm support for your model.

Turn on Windowed Apps and arrange two apps
- Open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and enable Windowed Apps.
- Open the first app, then drag a second app from the Dock, App Library, or Spotlight to the left or right edge of the screen.
- Drag the divider between the apps to change their relative window sizes.

Check your model before enabling Stage Manager
Apple’s iPadOS 26 compatibility information lists iPad mini (A17 Pro) for Stage Manager. Its broader model list also includes iPad mini (5th generation and later), so check your exact model and installed iPadOS version rather than assuming every mini has the same options. The separate list of iPads that can move Stage Manager apps and windows to an external display does not include iPad mini. Do not assume the mini supports that external-display workflow. Use a keyboard only if its shortcut workflow helps
An external keyboard is optional, not a prerequisite for these display or multitasking settings. Apple documents a keyboard shortcut for viewing recent apps, with the key combination depending on the connected keyboard. The documentation does not establish compatibility or shortcut behavior for a particular third-party keyboard, so verify both for the keyboard you plan to use.
