Look for pale or bleached patches on leaves exposed to strong light that later turn brown, dry, and brittle. That pattern is consistent with sun scorch, particularly after a sudden move into brighter conditions—but it is not proof: watering, temperature, fertilizer or salt, humidity, pests, and disease can cause overlapping damage.
What does too much direct sun look like?
Sun and heat can break down leaf chlorophyll. On a susceptible plant, affected areas may first look faded, pale, or bleached, then become brown and brittle. Strong light combined with dry soil can make the damage worse. Scorched tissue does not recover, and damaged leaves may eventually drop.

Look at the pattern as well as the color: damage on the leaves receiving the strongest exposure, especially after a recent increase in light, makes sun scorch more plausible. But species respond differently. Some, including weeping fig and tropical hibiscus, may drop leaves after a light change rather than develop the classic scorched patches.

Brown tips, spots, yellowing, and leaf drop are clues, not a diagnosis. Before moving a plant into a darker spot, compare its light needs with the light reaching its leaves and consider what has changed recently.

- Water and soil: Check whether the soil is unusually dry or has stayed wet. Dry soil can intensify scorch, while improper watering can also cause leaf damage.
- Recent changes: Note a move to a sunnier window, a change of season, or a transition outdoors. A sudden change in light is a useful clue.
- Other conditions: Low humidity, drafts, fertilizer or salt buildup, pests, and disease can cause similar symptoms. Inspect the plant for signs beyond the damaged leaf areas.
Correct the likeliest environmental problem and watch for further damage and new growth. A brown tip alone is not a reason to reduce light.
How much sun reaches the leaves?
Window direction is only a starting point. The light at the plant depends on its distance from the glass, how long direct sun falls on it, the season, weather, and anything that shades or filters the window. Curtains, insect screens, window type and cleanliness, and shade from nearby buildings or trees all matter. South-facing windows, bay windows, and sunrooms are often bright, but whether a spot is too sunny depends on the plant and its actual exposure.

University of Maryland Extension reports an outdoor direct-sun peak of about 10,000 footcandles on its Lighting for Indoor Plants page (accessed 2026). That is context for outdoor light, not a threshold for diagnosing damage indoors. The cited guidance does not establish one footcandle reading or duration that signals injury for every houseplant.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that light meters, smartphone apps, and SLR cameras can measure intensity. Such measurements can help compare locations, but you do not need a device to recognize likely scorch; compare the plant’s needs, the exposure, and its recent history.

- SIZE: Measures 6.5 feet in width and 10 feet in length (2 meters x 3 meters). you can easily cut it to your desired size and shape to suit your needs
- Protects Plants Effectively: Shade cloth doesn't decrease the amount of sunlight your plants receive throughout the day. It's more than just relocating your plants to a shaded spot. Instead, shade cloth softens the intensity of UV rays, allowing your plants to benefit from sunlight without enduring its full force. By blocking up to 55% of sunlight, our shade cloth provides crucial UV protection, helping to regulate temperature, enhance airflow, and reduce the need for frequent watering
- Long-lasting: Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), this mesh is built to last and withstand wear and tear. Its knitted design makes it tough against tears and ensures it stays in great condition over time
- Improved Growing Conditions: By maintaining cooler conditions for plants and soil, shade cloth helps to prolong the growing season for cool-season crops as summer temperatures rise. This solution also prevents crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers from ceasing production during the peak summer heat, it creates a favorable microclimate for plants, which can lead to increased yields and vibrant flowers
- Versatile Applications: Garden Shade Cloth is commonly utilized in various settings, including patios, greenhouses, lawn gardens, poultry houses, succulent plant cultivation, barns, dog houses, swimming pools, car parking areas, and camping sites for shading purposes
How to reduce harsh exposure safely
- Check the plant’s light tolerance. Identify whether its species can take direct sun, then compare that with the intensity and duration at the foliage.
- Make a modest adjustment. Move the plant farther from the window or filter the light with a sheer curtain. University of Maryland Extension recommends these options for excessive summer sun. Filtering is optional; it will not address damage caused by watering, pests, or other problems.
- Acclimate gradually. Avoid a sudden move between very different light levels. For an indoor plant going outside, University of Maryland Extension recommends starting with two hours a day in full sun and increasing gradually; Iowa State recommends a transition over several weeks when light intensity changes substantially. These are acclimation directions, not a recommendation that every species should end up in full sun.
- Judge the change by what happens next. Existing scorched tissue will not heal. Watch for additional damage and assess the health of new growth; do not remove otherwise healthy leaves just because part of a leaf is damaged.
If you are moving a houseplant outdoors
Many houseplants prefer indirect light. A plant accustomed to a bright indoor window can scorch within hours in direct outdoor sun, according to University of Minnesota Extension. Start with filtered light or morning sun for plants that prefer indirect light, and avoid hot midday and afternoon exposure. Check the pot’s moisture: outdoor containers can dry faster.

Compare the options before changing the spot
| Option | When it fits | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Move the plant farther from the window | The species prefers less direct light and the foliage receives strong sun. | Make the change gradually if the new spot has a very different light level. |
| Filter the window light with a sheer curtain | The plant needs the window location but direct exposure is too intense. | Filtering reduces light; it does not correct unrelated causes of leaf damage. |
| Measure or compare light in possible locations | You want to compare intensity between spots. | A measurement can inform placement, but there is no universal reading in the cited guidance that diagnoses sun injury across species. |
