iOS 5 brought Notification Center, iMessage, iCloud features and on-device setup to supported iPhones and iPads. This walkthrough explains how its main features worked and which devices supported them. It describes the release historically: Apple’s archived notes do not establish whether activation or online services still work on an iOS 5 device today.
What changed in iOS 5?
Apple’s archived About iOS 5 page describes “over 200 new features, including bug fixes.” The page displays a published date of November 15, 2023; that is the date shown on the archived support page, not confirmation of the original release date.

The most visible changes brought notifications together, added iMessage, expanded iCloud functions and let users set up and update their devices without relying on a computer for every task. The feature set varied by device, and Apple’s notes also document changes in later iOS 5 maintenance releases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Notification Center.
- Review the notifications collected there. New notifications could also appear briefly as banners at the top of the screen.
- On the lock screen, view notifications and tap a notification icon to open its associated app.
How iMessage worked
iMessage let iOS 5 users send text, photo and video messages to other iOS 5 users over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Its listed features included group messaging and delivery and read receipts.

What iCloud added
iOS 5’s iCloud feature list covered several kinds of syncing and online storage:

These are features Apple described for the release, not a guarantee of present-day access. The archived notes do not establish whether an old device can currently activate, connect to iCloud, use Find My iPhone, download apps or receive an update.
Setup and software updates without a computer
Setup Assistant allowed users to set up, activate and configure a device directly on it. iOS 5 also introduced over-the-air software updates, so updating no longer required tethering the device to a computer. Apple’s archived notes also list iTunes as an update route.

Those notes explain what iOS 5 introduced, but they do not establish whether Apple’s activation or update services remain available to a particular legacy device. They should not be treated as current step-by-step instructions or a promise that an update can still be installed.
