Which iPhones can install iOS 27?
Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility list includes iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max; the iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 families; iPhone Air; iPhone 18 Pro models; and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). This establishes operating-system eligibility, not access to every feature.

Apple cautions that features and apps can vary by iPhone model, region, language and carrier. Its iOS 27 overview describes features including synced captions and caption translation, iCloud Shared Albums improvements, Cycle Tracking resources, enhanced Maps Flyover, AirPods Custom EQ, smarter Home features using Apple Intelligence, and GymKit on iPhone. Check the specific feature’s availability for your model and location rather than assuming it comes with the OS update.
What features do older iPhones miss?
The main reported difference is Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI capabilities. A September 9, 2026 MacRumors model-tier report describes three broad groups:

These tiers reflect MacRumors’ reporting on September 9, 2026, not a permanent or universal compatibility matrix. Apple’s overview explains features but does not provide the same per-model breakdown. Availability can also depend on region, language, carrier and rollout status. In practical terms, an older supported iPhone can receive iOS 27 without receiving its most prominent reported AI features. For a decision about one device, compare its exact model against Apple’s compatibility information and check current feature availability rather than relying on the family name alone.

Does iOS 27 slow down older iPhones?
Apple says iOS 27 includes an “optimized CPU scheduler” and describes system refinements intended to improve the experience. The AP also reports refinements aimed at faster operation, including quicker app loading. Neither source provides a comparable independent benchmark that quantifies how an older supported iPhone performs against a newer one.
So there is no evidence here to support a blanket claim that iOS 27 makes every older iPhone faster—or slower. Your individual phone’s battery health, available storage, temperature and app workload can affect perceived performance. Check those conditions on the device itself; the cited material does not quantify their effects by model.

How to decide whether the feature gap matters
- If you mainly want the OS update: Apple lists iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, as eligible.
- If Apple Intelligence or new Siri features are your priority: use the dated tier report as a guide, then verify current availability for your precise model, region and language.
- If your concern is speed: do not infer a performance result from the scheduler description alone. Assess your own phone’s condition and day-to-day workload; no cross-model benchmark is established by these sources.
- If you are considering an upgrade for the fullest reported Siri tier: MacRumors places iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air in that tier. Confirm feature availability before buying, since the report is dated and does not establish current retail price, configuration or carrier terms.
