Yes. An iPhone can download and install an available iOS update overnight when Automatically Install is on, the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and Apple has notified you before installation. If you want updates downloaded but not installed automatically, turn that switch off and use Automatically Download instead.
What the two Automatic Updates switches do
Find them at Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple’s iOS 27 instructions distinguish downloading an update from installing it: one switch can prepare the update, while the other enables automatic installation.

- Open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Turn off Automatically Install. This is the switch that enables automatic installation.
- If you still want the update downloaded in advance, turn on or leave on Automatically Download, if that option is available.
- When you are ready, return to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the action offered. Apple describes a manual Download and Install flow; after an update has downloaded, you may be offered Update Now or Update Tonight.
Update Tonight is a choice for an update that has already been downloaded. It is not the same as enabling the automatic-download switch.

Which settings are separate from iOS updates?
System Files
Apple describes System Files as updates that can be downloaded and installed automatically to improve iPhone features without changing the iOS version. Apple’s iPhone guide gives this setting its own control under Automatic Updates. Turning off automatic installation of full iOS updates should not be treated as turning off this separate control. Background Security Improvements
These are also separate from full iOS updates. Apple says they provide additional protection between software updates, and places their Automatically Install control at Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. Apple notes that, in rare cases of compatibility problems, an improvement may be temporarily removed and included in a future software update. See Apple’s Background Security Improvements guide.

Check your iPhone’s update behavior
- For automatic overnight installation, check whether Automatically Install is on.
- For automatic download but a later manual installation, turn off Automatically Install and use Automatically Download, if offered.
- For an update already downloaded, review the available choices in Software Update before selecting Update Now or Update Tonight.
- Review System Files and Background Security Improvements separately if you want to check those update behaviors too.
Apple’s instructions name charging and Wi-Fi as conditions for overnight installation; they do not give a guaranteed installation time or date. For automatic downloading, Apple also names a locked phone. Apple’s current iOS 27 guidance is available at About iOS updates.
