iOS 18.6 Explained: What Apple Fixed, Compatible iPhones, and What to Update Now

iOS 18.6 fixed a Photos sharing bug and broad security issues, but it is obsolete in 2026. Here is what Apple patched, which iPhones were compatible, and what to install now.

iOS 18.6 was released on July 29, 2025. It fixed a Photos Memory Movies sharing problem and a broad set of security vulnerabilities, including issues affecting WebKit, Mail, media processing, accessibility, and system components. But the update is now obsolete: in 2026, install the newest compatible iOS version offered under Settings > General > Software Update, not iOS 18.6 specifically.

Bottom line

iOS 18.6 was a genuine security and maintenance release for compatible iPhones, launched on July 29, 2025. It fixed a Photos problem that could prevent Memory Movies from being shared and patched vulnerabilities in WebKit, Mail, media processing, accessibility, the kernel, and other system components.

However, iOS 18.6 is no longer the version to install. As of August 10, 2026, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest compatible update Apple offers for your iPhone. Depending on the model, that may be a later iOS 18.x release or a newer major iOS version.

What Apple released on July 29, 2025

Apple described iOS 18.6 in its release notes this way:

“This update provides important bug fixes and security updates, and fixes an issue in Photos that could prevent memory movies from being shared.”

That makes iOS 18.6 a maintenance and security release rather than a major feature update. The principal user-visible change was the Photos fix: some users could not share Memory Movies, Apple’s automatically generated photo-and-video compilations.

Apple released the update alongside iPadOS 18.6, macOS Sequoia 15.6, macOS Sonoma 14.7.7, macOS Ventura 13.7.7, watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6.

Apple’s wording supports calling the update important, but it does not document an extraordinary emergency warning or say that every iPhone owner was under active attack. “Apple urges all iPhone users to update” is therefore best understood as headline framing. The practical recommendation was still sensible at the time: install the update rather than postponing a security release simply because a newer major iOS version was approaching.

What security problems did iOS 18.6 fix?

Apple’s bulletin covered a broad set of vulnerabilities. Contemporary reports counted the release as fixing roughly two dozen to 29 issues, depending on which entries were counted and when. Apple’s bulletin is not a simple one-CVE-per-line list: some component headings contain multiple CVEs, and Apple later added or amended entries, including entries dated October 15, 2025. The safest description is that iOS 18.6 addressed a large set of security entries across many parts of the operating system.

Privacy and access-control issues

Several fixes involved information that should be protected or clearly signaled to the user:

  • VoiceOver: Under some circumstances, VoiceOver could read a passcode aloud.
  • Camera and microphone indicators: Privacy indicators might fail to display correctly, making it harder to tell when those sensors were being used.
  • CoreMedia Playback: An app might access sensitive user data.
  • Mail: In certain situations, Mail could load remote images while Lockdown Mode was enabled, or display remote images despite relevant forwarding protections.

These are not all the same kind of flaw. Some affect privacy visibility, some concern access to data, and some depend on particular settings or usage conditions. They nevertheless matter because they can undermine protections users reasonably expect from iOS.

Memory-safety and file-processing flaws

Apple also fixed problems in components that process potentially untrusted content, including afclip, CoreAudio, CoreMedia, ImageIO, the kernel, Metal, Model I/O, SQLite, and WebKit.

Many of these vulnerabilities could be triggered by a maliciously crafted file, image, audio or video asset, texture, database, or web page. Reported consequences included application crashes, memory corruption, information disclosure, and denial-of-service conditions. A crash-only vulnerability is generally less severe than code execution, but it can still be useful in an attack chain or make a device or app unreliable when it encounters hostile content.

WebKit and Safari exposure

Because WebKit powers Safari and web views inside many iPhone apps, its fixes were particularly relevant even to people who rarely think of themselves as “browser users.” Apple listed fixes involving:

  • malicious websites spoofing the address bar;
  • disclosure of sensitive information;
  • memory corruption caused by malicious web content;
  • unexpected Safari crashes;
  • denial-of-service conditions; and
  • disclosure of internal application state.

Representative entries included CVE-2025-43228, CVE-2025-43227, CVE-2025-31278, CVE-2025-31277, CVE-2025-31273, CVE-2025-43214, CVE-2025-43213, and CVE-2025-43212.

The CVE-2025-6558 zero-day distinction

One part of the iOS 18.6 story requires careful wording. Apple’s bulletin included a WebKit-related fix for CVE-2025-6558 and credited Google’s Threat Analysis Group. Separately, Google reported exploitation of the related Chrome ANGLE/GPU vulnerability, and CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on July 22, 2025.

That evidence establishes active exploitation against Chrome users and shows why the affected or related code also needed attention in Apple software. It does not by itself prove that attackers were exploiting iPhones through Safari. Apple’s bulletin describes the iOS-side issue as capable of causing an unexpected Safari crash; it does not state that Safari users were being actively targeted.

The accurate summary is: iOS 18.6 addressed a vulnerability whose corresponding Chrome flaw had been exploited, but the available evidence does not establish a confirmed Safari attack campaign against iPhone users. Updating reduced exposure to known weaknesses, but no software update guarantees protection from every future attack.

Which iPhones could install iOS 18.6?

iOS 18.6 was available to iPhones compatible with iOS 18—not every iPhone still in use. The supported range was:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 series
  • iPhone 13 series
  • iPhone 14 series
  • iPhone 15 series
  • iPhone 16 series
  • iPhone SE, 2nd generation or later

In short, the compatibility rule was iPhone XS/XR and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation or later). Apple’s iOS and iPadOS compatibility list confirms the supported models.

The iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and older models cannot install iOS 18.6. That does not automatically mean an older phone has no update available. Apple continued issuing security updates for older branches, including iOS 16.7.15 and iOS 15.8.7 in March 2026. Owners of older iPhones should install the newest version displayed for their particular model.

iOS 18.6 is obsolete: what should you install now?

Several later releases followed iOS 18.6:

Date Release Why it matters
July 29, 2025 iOS 18.6 Photos Memory Movies sharing fix and security updates
August 14, 2025 iOS 18.6.1 Added a U.S. Apple Watch Blood Oxygen experience; Apple published no CVE entries for the release
August 20, 2025 iOS 18.6.2 Important security fixes
September 15, 2025 iOS 18.7 Bug fixes and security updates
September 29, 2025 iOS 18.7.1 Security update
November 5, 2025 iOS 18.7.2 Security update
December 12, 2025 iOS 18.7.3 Security fixes
March 24, 2026 iOS 18.7.7 Important security fixes; Apple expanded availability on April 1 to protect more devices from DarkSword-related web attacks
April 22, 2026 iOS 18.7.8 Bug fix and security update
May 11, 2026 iOS 18.7.9 Security release for iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and iPad 7th generation

Apple’s security releases archive lists the later updates. The exact update offered depends on the iPhone model and Apple’s current support policy. Newer models may be offered a newer major iOS branch, while some older iOS 18-compatible devices may remain on a later 18.x release.

If Apple presents both a later iOS 18 update and a newer major iOS upgrade, read the version numbers and release notes. A user who wants to remain on iOS 18 should choose the latest iOS 18.x option Apple offers, not stop at 18.6. A user comfortable with the newer major release can choose that instead.

How to update an iPhone

  1. Back up first. Use iCloud or back up to a Mac or PC. Apple says downloading the latest iOS leaves data and settings unchanged, but a current backup is still the sensible precaution.
  2. Connect the iPhone to power and a Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Tap General, then Software Update.
  5. Review the version number and release notes. If more than one option appears, do not assume the older iOS 18 option is the newest security release.
  6. Tap Download and Install, enter the passcode if prompted, and let the iPhone restart.

Apple’s official update instructions cover the wireless process, storage requirements, and automatic update settings.

If no update appears

First check the installed version under Settings > General > About, then return to Settings > General > Software Update. Confirm that Wi-Fi is working and try again later if the update is still rolling out or Apple’s servers are busy. A VPN or proxy can prevent the phone from contacting Apple’s update servers, so temporarily disconnect one if it is active.

If the phone still cannot update wirelessly, connect it to a computer. Apple says users can update with Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or with iTunes on Windows and older macOS versions. See Apple’s computer-based update guidance before beginning.

If there is not enough storage

When necessary, iOS can temporarily remove apps to create enough space for an update. Apple says those apps are automatically reinstalled after installation. If you cancel the update, you can instead delete large videos, offline downloads, or unused apps manually and retry.

If the phone is unsupported

You cannot force iOS 18.6 onto an iPhone X, iPhone 8, or older model. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest version Apple offers for that device. If no update is available, keep the phone’s apps current where possible and consider replacing the device if it no longer receives security support.

Should you have installed iOS 18.6 at the time?

Yes, if your iPhone was compatible. The release fixed a real Photos problem and addressed security issues in components that handle websites, images, audio, video, databases, graphics, email, and system functions. It was a relatively contained maintenance release and did not depend on Apple Intelligence hardware.

Waiting for the next major iOS release was not a good reason to postpone it. Major upgrades and point releases serve different purposes: a major upgrade changes the platform and may introduce new features, while a point release such as iOS 18.6 primarily fixes defects and security weaknesses within the existing branch.

That historical recommendation should not be confused with today’s instruction. In August 2026, installing 18.6 specifically would leave the phone behind later security releases. Update to the newest compatible version Apple displays instead.

What iOS 18.6 did not promise

Apple’s release notes do not claim that iOS 18.6 improves battery life, speed, overheating, keyboard performance, or general stability. Those outcomes may vary from device to device and should not be presented as universal benefits without controlled testing.

Likewise, the update did not fix every possible security problem or guarantee safety. Software updates address known vulnerabilities; users should still install future updates, use strong passcodes, keep two-factor authentication enabled, and be cautious with unexpected links and attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Is iOS 18.6 available for the iPhone X?

No. The iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and older models are not compatible with iOS 18.6. Check Settings > General > Software Update for the newest version available to the phone.

Will updating erase my data?

A normal iOS update is designed to preserve data and settings, but Apple recommends backing up before installing. A backup gives you a recovery option if an unrelated problem occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I avoid the newer major iOS upgrade?

Possibly. Apple may display both a later iOS 18 update and a newer major iOS upgrade. If you want to stay on iOS 18, choose the latest iOS 18.x option shown. Availability varies by model and date.

Do I need to update if I do not use Safari?

Yes. WebKit is used by Safari and by web content embedded in many apps, and iOS 18.6 also fixed vulnerabilities in Mail, media handling, accessibility, graphics, databases, and other system components.

Does iOS 18.6 fix battery drain or overheating?

Apple’s official notes do not promise those improvements. Do not treat them as confirmed benefits of the release.

I already installed iOS 18.6. What should I do?

Check Settings > General > Software Update again. iOS 18.6 was followed by 18.6.1, 18.6.2, and later 18.7.x releases, so it is not the endpoint of Apple’s iOS 18 security branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iOS 18.6 available for iPhone X or iPhone 8?

No. iOS 18.6 supported the iPhone XS/XR and later, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation or later). The iPhone X and iPhone 8 series were excluded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my iPhone cannot install iOS 18.6?

No. Check Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest version Apple offers for your model.

Can I stay on iOS 18 instead of upgrading to a newer major iOS version?

Yes, if Apple shows it. If multiple update paths appear, select the latest iOS 18.x release rather than stopping at obsolete iOS 18.6.

Does iOS 18.6 improve battery life or performance?

No specific battery, speed, overheating, or keyboard improvement was promised in Apple’s official release notes.

The Bottom Line

iOS 18.6 was an important July 2025 security update for iPhone XS/XR and newer models, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. It is obsolete now. Install the newest compatible update shown under Settings > General > Software Update, whether that is a later iOS 18.x release or a newer major version.
