An invoice PDF API usually accepts provider-defined invoice data in an HTTP request and returns either PDF bytes or, in some services, a link to a generated file. To handle a direct PDF response safely, send the documented JSON payload, preserve the response as bytes, and check both its headers and its contents before treating it as a usable invoice.
What goes into an invoice PDF request?
The request schema belongs to the specific API; there is no universal invoice-PDF JSON format. One documented example includes an invoice number, issue and due dates, currency, seller and customer details, line items, subtotal, tax, and total. Those fields illustrate that provider’s payload, not a legal invoice schema for every country or service. See PDFCrowd’s invoice PDF API documentation for its example.

Before sending a request, use the endpoint’s documented field names, data types, authentication method, and required headers. Confirm how the API expects totals and tax to be supplied, and whether it calculates them or merely renders the values you send. The cited examples do not establish a universally applicable invoice format or jurisdiction-specific compliance.

What can the API return?
A successful HTTP request does not necessarily return JSON. Anvil documents POST /api/v1/generate-pdf as returning raw binary PDF data; its documentation also warns that some HTTP clients expose the response body as a text string, so byte-preserving handling matters. Anvil’s generate-PDF documentation describes that endpoint’s behavior.

APIstax documents a POST endpoint that returns a PDF with the application/pdf content type. Other services may provide a hosted URL instead of inline file bytes, so check the exact endpoint’s response contract rather than assuming all invoice APIs behave alike. APIstax’s invoice PDF documentation describes its response.
How to save and check a direct PDF response
For a reproducible exchange, record the provider and endpoint, API version, date accessed, runtime or HTTP client, request headers, status code, response headers, and how the response body was saved. The examples below are provider documentation, not a report of personal testing. PDFCrowd’s documentation demonstrates a JSON request and uses cURL output redirection to save the response as invoice.pdf; use that pattern only with the endpoint, authentication, and payload specified by the service you choose.

- Send the documented request. Include the required authentication and content headers, and provide invoice data in the API’s specified format.
- Check the HTTP status. Confirm that the service returned a successful status before treating the body as the requested file. For an error response, follow the provider’s documented error format rather than saving it as a PDF.
- Inspect the response content type. A direct PDF response should identify itself as
application/pdf. This is useful metadata, but a server can send an incorrect content type. - Preserve and save the body as bytes. Do not decode it as ordinary text or pass it to a JSON parser. The registered media type’s encoding is binary, as specified in RFC 8118.
- Check that the saved file is nonempty and inspect its leading bytes. RFC 8118 identifies the PDF magic number as
%PDF-followed by a version number, such as%PDF-1.7or%PDF-2.0. The signature is evidence that the payload is PDF-formatted, not proof that the entire file is intact. - Open or parse the saved file. Use a PDF reader or validator to check that it opens, then inspect the invoice text and totals if content accuracy matters.
The status, content-type, nonempty-body, and leading-signature checks are a practical screening sequence; RFC 8118 does not prescribe them as a complete PDF validation procedure. A correct header or matching signature alone cannot establish that a file is structurally sound, readable, or contains accurate invoice data.

No. A successful PDF-generation call proves only that the service produced a response according to its documented API behavior. It does not establish that the invoice meets tax, accounting, electronic-invoicing, or record-keeping rules in a particular jurisdiction. If compliance matters, identify the applicable country or region and validate against its relevant rules or required e-invoice standard; the generic API examples above do not establish that compliance.
