Microsoft recommends assessing source packages for migration issues; the inventory below makes that assessment easier to review and act on.
What an SSIS inventory should help you decide
An inventory is a planning artifact, not an automatic conversion. Its job is to make each package’s current state visible, identify likely blockers and changes, and support a defensible choice of migration path. Microsoft’s SSIS migration overview says assessment can identify issues that would prevent successful migration and distinguishes migration blockers from informative issues.

The following is a proposed working checklist, not a Microsoft-prescribed schema. Capture one record per package, with project-level context where dependencies span multiple packages.

What exists
- Identity and storage: package and project names, source location, and storage type—such as the file system, Package Store, or SSIS catalog. Note the relevant configuration files and their locations.
- Execution context: SQL Agent jobs or other schedules, execution order, parent-child relationships, and upstream or downstream orchestration.
- Dependencies and connections: connection managers, referenced files, external systems, credentials or authentication methods, and environment-specific settings. Record where these are defined without copying secret values into the inventory or an AI prompt.
What may block or change
- Assessment findings, classified as blockers or issues that need investigation.
- Features that may be unsupported, deprecated, or require redesign in the intended destination.
- Authentication, connection, configuration, and network assumptions that differ between the existing environment and the target.
What happens next
- A candidate path: run the existing package where suitable, or remediate and rework it for the target architecture.
- Named remediation tasks, an owner, and a status for each unresolved issue.
- A validation plan describing how the team will establish that the migrated workload behaves correctly.
How to use a Claude Skill without overstating what it proves
Microsoft lists Claude among the large language models that can assist with migration tasks, including refactoring expressions, adapting ADF JSON syntax, drafting SQL MERGE statements, preparing connection templates, and writing validation scripts. That supports using an LLM to accelerate bounded work; it does not establish that any particular Claude Skill has been tested, inventories every SSIS feature, or makes migration decisions reliably.

- Provide a safe, bounded input. Give the assistant package metadata or reviewed, redacted excerpts needed for the task. Microsoft advises against pasting sensitive information into AI tools. Do not supply credentials, secret-bearing connection strings, or proprietary material unless your organization has explicitly approved that use and the tool’s data handling.
- Ask for evidence-linked findings. Have the assistant identify the package or file and the relevant component or setting for each finding. Separate what is directly visible in the input from an inference, and flag unknowns rather than filling them in.
- Keep the output reviewable. Use a stable inventory structure such as the checklist above. Mark proposed target paths and compatibility observations as candidates for human review, not as migration sign-off.
- Validate outside the model. Review findings against the package and the chosen target, then test changes in development. Microsoft recommends automated checks such as row counts, schema comparisons, and business-rule checks for AI-assisted migration work.
Choose the package path and the broader pipeline path separately
“Migration to Fabric” can mean different things. One decision is how to run or replace a particular SSIS package; another is how to modernize the pipeline or orchestration around it. Do not assume that moving a package file resolves either question.
| Option | What it is for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric Invoke SSIS Package activity | A documented route for invoking an SSIS package from Fabric Data Factory when the package and its requirements suit that route. | Microsoft marks the activity as preview. Packages must be stored in OneLake, and the documentation specifies additional prerequisites, configuration, monitoring, and limitations. Preview behavior and availability can change. |
| Remediate or rework for the destination | Address package findings and adapt workload logic, connections, or surrounding orchestration for the selected destination. | The required changes depend on the package and target. Microsoft’s broader ADF-to-Fabric migration guidance is not a universal package-compatibility guarantee. |
Evaluate the alternatives against package compatibility, redesign effort, authentication and connectivity, operational maturity, and validation work. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish one best path for every SSIS estate.

Keep assessment tooling’s lifecycle in view
Microsoft’s SSIS migration overview documents batch assessment with Data Migration Assistant (DMA) version 5.0 and later for packages stored in the file system, Package Store, and SSIS catalog. The same overview says DMA is deprecated. Because that status affects whether it is appropriate to adopt or rely on the tool, verify current availability and support for your environment before making it part of an operational plan.
Account for Fabric Data Warehouse connections and authentication
If the destination is Fabric Data Warehouse, review package connection settings as a migration concern, not just a deployment detail. Microsoft’s integration tutorial explains that Fabric supports Microsoft Entra ID authentication for users and service principals and walks through adapting SSIS package authentication and connections. The inventory should therefore record the existing authentication assumption and the change or test needed for the chosen Fabric connection.

Turn the inventory into a migration decision
For each package, end with a clear disposition: candidate for the Invoke SSIS Package activity, candidate for remediation and rework, or unresolved pending compatibility investigation. Attach the blockers, dependencies, authentication changes, and validation checks that justify that disposition. A package stored in OneLake is not, by that fact alone, compatible or migrated; the documented activity has additional prerequisites and configuration requirements.
Use the resulting inventory to plan review and remediation, then validate actual outcomes in development before relying on a migrated workload. The inventory earns its value by exposing decisions and unknowns early—not by making those decisions on its own.
