Intune App Categories: Help Users Find Apps in Company Portal

Create categories in Intune, apply them to apps, and make work apps easier to browse in Company Portal.

Create app categories in the Microsoft Intune admin center, then assign them to apps so employees can browse Company Portal by type or function. Categories improve discovery; they do not deploy apps or replace assignment settings.

Create a category in the Intune admin center

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.

  2. Go to Apps > App categories to view the categories already available in your organization.

Intune allows up to 200 app categories. Each category name can be entered in one language only, and Intune does not translate it. Choose names that are clear to your users and consistent with the language used in your organization.

Apply categories to an app

When adding an app, choose one or more categories in the app information. You can select built-in categories, categories created for your organization, or both. Microsoft’s Win32 app instructions identify category as an app-information field and describe assignment separately.

Categories affect how users find apps in Company Portal; they do not determine who receives an app. Configure the appropriate deployment assignment separately for the intended users or devices.

What users see in Company Portal

In the Windows Company Portal app, users can open App categories to browse apps by type or function, then select a category to narrow the list. They can also search by app name or publisher, as explained in Microsoft’s Windows Company Portal instructions.

App names should be unique in Company Portal. Microsoft warns that if two apps have the same name, only one of them appears there. Use distinct display names when adding apps so users can identify the right result.

Pin or delete a category

To manage a category from the category list, select the ellipsis beside it. The documented options include Pin to dashboard and Delete. Microsoft’s category-management guidance does not describe a rename option, so do not assume an existing category can be renamed through this procedure.
