What Into the Backrooms: Found Footage is
HORROR – Into The Backrooms – Found Footage (dweller) is a Minecraft horror modpack by kamussy. CurseForge describes it as a classic VHS-style Backrooms experience in Minecraft, while Modrinth describes an endless cycle of liminal rooms containing anomalies, entities, buzzing, whispers, and other unsafe conditions. The pack credits SpacePotato for the underlying Backrooms mod.
It targets Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 and uses Fabric. The listings identify both client-and-server support and multiplayer tags, so it can be played alone or with a hosted server. CurseForge currently lists release 2.0.7, updated October 13, 2026. Compatibility, commands, and level behavior can change when the pack updates, so check the profile version before troubleshooting an unexpected difference.

Install the correct version before you play
- Use Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Create or install a profile for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Choose the pack’s Fabric loader. A Forge profile will not load this Fabric pack correctly.
- For multiplayer, install the same pack version and loader on the server and every client. The pack’s listings identify it as supporting both client and server play.
- Allocate about 4 GB of RAM to the game as the published guidance recommends. Leave enough memory for your operating system and other programs.
The pack is unusually demanding for a Minecraft horror map. Meeting the published minimum recommendation does not guarantee smooth play: the official hardware note says performance can still fail on an older or weaker CPU or GPU.
Published hardware guidance and what it means

These figures are the CurseForge guidance published in 2026, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. If you are close to the limits, close browsers and overlays, use the launcher profile’s memory setting, and reduce demanding graphics options before entering a multiplayer session. If the game crashes during loading, first verify that the profile is exactly 1.20.1 Fabric and that the allocated memory is not set higher than your computer can supply.
Prepare your character for the entry ritual
The official entry instruction is deliberately dangerous: suffocate yourself with sand or gravel. The walkthrough also recommends entering at full hunger because the Backrooms route can be long. Armor does not carry into the Backrooms, so do not rely on an armored overworld loadout as your plan for survival.
- Fill your hunger bar before starting.
- Put sand or gravel above your character so the blocks begin the suffocation transition.
- Allow the entry sequence to complete instead of breaking the blocks immediately.
- Once inside, activate the flashlight. The default key is F, and the walkthrough describes its battery as unlimited.
Because entry clears your overworld inventory, treat the ritual as a one-way expedition. The documented /gimmemyinventoryback (username) command can restore an overworld inventory when you need to recover what was removed.
Route overview: every level and exit
There are five principal levels and a final escape destination. Level 1 is the main decision point: its downstairs staircase takes the longer Pipe Dreams route, while its upstairs staircase takes the shorter Forgotten Station route. Both alternatives eventually converge at Level 10.

Level 0: find the chained-fence staircase
The Lobby is a procedurally generated maze of yellowed, liminal corridors. Do not expect a universal map coordinate or a fixed number of turns. Your objective is visual: locate a room with white lights, a chained fence, and a staircase descending from it.

The lighting, whispers, and corridor glitches are designed to make ordinary landmarks unreliable. Once you identify the chained-fence room, take the downward staircase to Level 1.
Surviving the Skinwalker
The Skinwalker is a Level 0 threat that appears only in multiplayer. According to the official description, it can take over a player’s body and use that player’s microphone to deceive the group. After a period of time or after being attacked, it emerges and attacks directly.
Voice communication therefore cannot be treated as proof that a teammate is safe. Confirm suspicious instructions through another channel or by watching the player’s actual position. If a player has been taken over, an operator can use /release (username) to free them.
Level 1: choose downstairs or upstairs
The Habitable Zone resembles a parking garage and contains the route decision that determines the rest of the run. Search the crates before leaving; they can contain food, which is especially valuable after the entry inventory wipe.

Downstairs: the longer route
The downstairs staircase leads to Level 2, Pipe Dreams, then to Level 37, the Poolrooms, before reaching Level 10. This path has more transitions and a sprint-management section, but it avoids the gas-station back-door trap associated with Forgotten Station.
Upstairs: the shorter route
The upstairs staircase leads to Level 324, Forgotten Station. From there, the road-side grass drops you directly to Level 10. This is the shorter route on paper, but only if you avoid the back door of the gas station.
Downstairs route: Pipe Dreams, Poolrooms, and Level 10
1. Cross Level 2 Pipe Dreams
Pipe Dreams is a long hallway lined with pipes. Keep moving forward; screen glitches indicate that the level is progressing and that you are approaching the next transition.
The route includes a sprint/energy bar. Holding sprint continuously can leave you without the energy needed for a dangerous stretch. Walk when the corridor is clear, sprint only to create distance or pass a threatening section, and let the bar recover before you commit to another burst.

2. Reach Level 37, the Poolrooms
In the Poolrooms, find the huge room and look for a staircase that winds upward along the wall. Climb it and pass through the hole at the top to continue.

Water behavior changes with the level’s time phase. The project states that pool water becomes toxic during sunset and night and returns to a safe state in the morning. The walkthrough describes taking damage in the water but surviving with adequate health. Avoid unnecessary swimming during the dangerous phase; if you must cross, keep the crossing brief and enter with enough health to withstand the damage.
3. Escape through Level 10
The Poolrooms route eventually reaches Level 10, the Infinite Grass Field. Search for the large fenced structure. Enter it and climb its staircase; this is the final route back to the surface.

1. Leave the station area by the road
Forgotten Station contains a gas station and an outdoor road. Follow the grass along either side of the road. Continuing along that grass leads to a drop into Level 10.

The official description specifically warns that the back door opens into a dark area with no exit. It is a trap, not an alternate shortcut. If you enter it, backtrack to the station and return to the road-side grass rather than searching the dark area for a staircase that is not there.
3. Find the fenced structure in Level 10
After the drop, use the same Level 10 objective as the downstairs route: locate the large fenced structure, go inside, and climb its staircase to return to the surface.
Smilers, lights, and deceptive events
Smilers on Level 1
Smilers appear during periodic light outages and damage players while visible. When one appears, shine the flashlight at it from close range; the documented counter is that the Smiler disappears. Keep the flashlight bound to an accessible key and avoid wasting time searching for a battery, because the walkthrough describes the battery as unlimited.
Audio and chat are not reliable safety signals
The pack can produce flickering or extinguished lights, horror effects, fake chat, fake join or leave notices, fake death messages, distant sounds, and glitching corridors. A message that appears to show a teammate joining, dying, or speaking may be part of the game event system. Verify what happened by checking the player’s physical location and using a second communication method.

Pool timing
The Poolrooms’ sunset/night toxic-water phase is an environmental event rather than an enemy. Plan your crossing around the morning-safe period when possible, and avoid lingering in water when the damaging phase is active.
Documented commands for testing and recovery

Use commands only where your world or server permissions allow them. The command syntax shown is the syntax documented by the project listings; an update can change available events or permission requirements.
Solo versus multiplayer
Solo play removes the multiplayer-only Skinwalker and its microphone deception, leaving environmental events, Smilers, and the route itself as the main challenges. It is also easier to verify whether a chat message or sound is an intentional game event because there is no teammate to imitate.
Co-op adds voice-mimic horror and gives the release command a practical role. Every player should install the same Minecraft, Fabric, and pack versions. Agree on a way to verify identity before entering, because fake voice and chat cues are part of the intended threat design.
Troubleshooting setup and performance
The pack will not launch
- Confirm the profile says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric, not another Minecraft version or loader.
- Make sure the client and server use the same pack release.
- Check that the launcher has enough allocated memory for the published 4 GB guidance without starving the operating system.
- Remove conflicting mods from the profile before changing unrelated settings.
Loading is slow or the game stutters
- Close memory-heavy background applications and overlays.
- Lower graphics settings in the profile before entering a generated level.
- Test in a fresh single-player world to separate local performance problems from server latency.
- Compare your CPU, GPU, and total RAM with the published i5-8400/Ryzen 5 2600, GTX 1060/RX 580, and 8 GB guidance. Being above one component does not compensate for a severe shortfall in another.
You cannot find the next exit
- In Level 0, search for the white-lit chained-fence room rather than a fixed coordinate.
- In Level 1, identify whether you are at the upstairs or downstairs staircase before moving on.
- In Pipe Dreams, continue through the pipe hallway and treat screen glitches as progress signals.
- In Forgotten Station, return to the road and follow grass on either side; never use the gas-station back door.
- In Level 10, search for the large fenced structure and its internal staircase.
Your armor or items disappeared
That is expected behavior for entry: armor does not carry into the Backrooms and the transition clears the overworld inventory. On a permitted world or server, use /gimmemyinventoryback (username) to restore the overworld inventory.
