The Internet of Everything (IoE) is Cisco’s term for the intelligent connection of people, process, data, and things. It describes more than putting devices online: it also includes how people use information and how workflows turn it into action. This is Cisco’s framework, not a universal standards-body definition.
What is the Internet of Everything?
In Cisco’s formulation, IoE connects four dimensions so that networked information can become useful action, capabilities, experiences, or value. The idea is to consider not only what is connected, but also how those connections are used.

Cisco promoted the Internet of Everything framework in 2012 and explained its four pillars and relationship to IoT in 2013. That history supports describing IoE as a Cisco-popularized framework; it does not establish that Cisco coined the phrase or was the first to use it.
What are the four pillars of IoE?
- People: The humans involved in, or affected by, connected activity.
- Process: The way people, data, and things work together.
- Data: Information produced by connected systems or made useful through them.
- Things: Physical objects and devices that participate in networked connections.
The process pillar is what makes IoE broader than a list of connected gadgets: it brings the workflow and the people who use the information into the picture.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
What is the difference between IoE and IoT?
In Cisco’s terminology, the Internet of Things (IoT) focuses on connected things. IoE uses a wider lens, combining things with people, data, and the processes that connect them. This is a conceptual distinction in Cisco’s framework; the available sources do not establish that every organization uses the terms in exactly the same way.
| Term | Focus in Cisco’s framework | What the lens includes |
|---|---|---|
| IoT | Connected things | Physical objects and devices participating in networked connections |
| IoE | Intelligent connections among four dimensions | People, process, data, and things |
How can IoE work in practice?
Retail
Cisco describes retailers combining sensors, video, and analytics to improve store productivity and customer experience. In the IoE framing, devices collect information, analytics help make it useful, and the resulting process can affect employees and customers. This is an example Cisco gives, not a claim that IoE is one standardized technical architecture.

- Certified & Future-Ready: Espressif-certified ESP32-WROOM-32E ensures full hardware compatibility and lifetime firmware support. Upgraded 8MB Flash handles IoT data and OTA updates.
- Dual-Core Speed: 240MHz dual-core processor runs Wi-Fi/BLE and sensors 2x faster. 38 GPIO pins (10 RTC) support SPI/I2C/UART for LCDs, motors, and industrial sensors.
- Plug & Play Dev: USB-C driver pre-installed: upload code instantly on Windows/Mac/Linux. Works with Arduino IDE, MicroPython, and Espressif IDF.
- All-Environment Ready: Run Wi-Fi smart switches (Home Assistant) and BLE tracking on one board. Industrial-grade stability (-40°C~85°C) for outdoor/automated systems.
- Advantages: The ESP32 development board offers high performance, low power consumption, and rich wireless connectivity, making it suitable for developers of all levels, especially beginners.
Supply chains
Cisco also points to supply chains as processes that can be transformed through networked information. The example highlights that IoE is concerned with how information changes a workflow, not just with connecting equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA simple connected workflow
For illustration, a sensor could report a condition, software could analyze the data, and a workflow could route an alert to a person able to respond. This shows how things, data, process, and people fit together; it is an explanatory scenario, not a documented deployment described by the cited material.

Are Cisco’s economic estimates current results?
No. Cisco’s figures were forecasts, not measurements of value that was later confirmed. In a 2013-era estimate, Cisco projected $14.4 trillion in potential private-sector value over ten years. In 2014, it announced a forecast of $4.6 trillion in potential public-sector value over the next decade. Neither figure should be presented as current realized value or as an independent measure of IoE’s impact.
The available sources do not establish a current independent measure of IoE adoption or realized economic value.

What the definition does—and does not—establish
IoE is useful as a way to think about the relationship between connected devices, information, people, and workflows. The evidence presented here supports attributing the four-part definition and the IoE-versus-IoT distinction to Cisco. It does not establish a formal standards-body definition or cross-industry consensus on that distinction.
