How to Use GitHub Copilot Cloud Agent Together in Microsoft Teams

Start a shared GitHub Copilot cloud agent session with @GitHub in Teams. Learn the setup, repository permissions, thread context, and review controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can start a shared GitHub Copilot cloud agent session from a Microsoft Teams conversation by mentioning @GitHub and describing the task. People in the conversation can add context and steer the work, but repository write access is required to trigger code changes. The integration is documented as a public preview, so check current GitHub eligibility and your organization’s policies before rolling it out.

What GitHub Copilot in Teams does—and what it is not

This integration brings GitHub Copilot cloud agent into a Teams channel, thread, or direct message through the GitHub app. A team can discuss a task in Teams, ask the agent to investigate or plan it, and—when the required repository permissions are in place—have it make changes. Work happens asynchronously in a secure cloud sandbox; resulting artifacts can include issues and pull requests. The team can continue steering the task in Teams or work with those artifacts in GitHub, a terminal, or a code editor. GitHub Docs

This is not Microsoft Copilot in Teams, nor Microsoft’s separate Channel Agent. Microsoft describes Channel Agent as a Teams feature that can connect to supported MCP servers, including GitHub; the GitHub app integration instead starts GitHub Copilot cloud agent sessions. What you need before starting

  • A GitHub account with access to a paid Copilot plan.
  • A Microsoft Teams account and the GitHub app installed in Teams.
  • Cloud sandboxes enabled for your Copilot plan. An organization or enterprise owner may need to enable cloud sandboxes and Copilot cloud agent.
  • Access to a repository for the task. Repository write access is needed to trigger changes.

GitHub documents the Teams integration as a public preview. Availability, plan eligibility, and organization controls can change; confirm the current requirements in GitHub’s setup and eligibility guidance before deployment.

How to start a GitHub Copilot session from Teams

  1. Install the GitHub app. Add it to the relevant Teams team. GitHub says the app only needs to be installed once for that team; members can then connect their individual GitHub accounts.
  2. Connect your GitHub account. Follow the prompt in Teams to authorize or link the account.
  3. Set a default repository if prompted. In a public channel, GitHub’s announcement says to configure one if requested. The default supplies task context and is where issues or pull requests are opened unless your prompt specifies another repository. Direct messages do not use a default repository.
  4. Mention the app and describe the task. In a channel, thread, or direct message, enter @GitHub followed by a clear request. For example: @GitHub investigate why the export job fails in this repository and propose a fix. Include the repository or branch in the prompt when needed.
  5. Use the conversation to guide the work. Participants can add relevant details, clarify requirements, and respond as the agent works. Use @GitHub help to see available commands.
  6. Review the resulting artifact. If the agent creates an issue or pull request, inspect it in GitHub and follow the repository’s normal review and approval process before accepting changes.

GitHub’s launch announcement covers starting sessions and shared participation; its integration instructions describe repository and branch details in prompts.

Who can ask the agent to make code changes?

In a shared conversation, anyone who can participate may contribute information or suggestions, but only a participant with write access to the relevant repository can trigger Copilot to make changes. Guests and outside collaborators cannot start or steer a Teams Copilot session, according to GitHub’s documented permissions.

Direct messages work differently from shared conversations: in a direct message, Copilot can act using the linked user’s GitHub permissions. In a channel or group thread, generated artifacts are created under the Teams integration’s app identity. That distinction affects who appears as the creator and how repository controls apply. Does Copilot use the whole Teams thread as context?

Yes. GitHub Docs says, “The entire thread becomes the decision-making context for the artifact.” That means relevant earlier messages can inform the agent’s work, but unrelated, sensitive, or misleading discussion in the same thread may also shape it. GitHub says conversation context is stored in generated artifacts. If you want to limit the context, GitHub suggests messaging the GitHub app directly rather than working in a shared thread. What to check before relying on the workflow

Repository and approval rules

Shared-context pull requests use the app identity. GitHub documents an additional approval requirement when a repository ruleset already requires at least one approval. Its August 2026 announcement also describes an administrator option to require an additional approval for pull requests attributed to the Microsoft Teams Copilot integration identity. Check the repository’s rulesets and approval settings before adopting this workflow; do not assume a generated pull request can bypass the usual review gates. Organization-level access and policy

Installing the app does not by itself guarantee that every user or repository can use cloud agent sessions. Confirm Copilot access, cloud-sandbox availability, and organization or enterprise settings with the appropriate owner. Because this is a preview, re-check GitHub’s live requirements rather than treating an earlier setup as a permanent eligibility guarantee.

Where to begin the task

Teams is useful when a task benefits from shared discussion: participants can contribute context in the conversation and follow the agent’s progress there. Starting directly in GitHub or another supported surface may be a better fit when you do not want a Teams thread to supply the task context. GitHub documents supported integrations separately, so verify the current capabilities for the surface you plan to use rather than assuming every workflow has identical permissions, identity, or outputs.
