An internet download manager is software that organizes and controls downloads from the internet. It may be built into a web browser or installed as a separate application. A standalone manager can add features such as queues, scheduling, categories, and download recovery, but it does not guarantee faster downloads or make every interrupted transfer resumable.
What an internet download manager does
A download manager keeps track of files you download and gives you controls for handling those transfers. Browser download features are download management too; the term does not refer only to a particular brand or to standalone software.

A separate manager may let you add a URL manually, capture eligible downloads from a browser, or collect links through a menu or clipboard. Depending on the program, it can also group files into categories, choose save locations, and let you start, pause, stop, or resume transfers. These are common possibilities, not features guaranteed in every manager.

| Need | Browser download handling | Standalone manager |
|---|---|---|
| Keep track of downloads | Typically provides a download list. | Provides a separate list and may add categories or configurable save folders. |
| Control several transfers | Usually handles transfers individually. | May add queues and scheduled downloads. |
| Add or capture a download | Handles downloads initiated in the browser. | May capture eligible browser downloads and accept URLs entered manually. |
| Resume an interrupted transfer | Depends on browser behavior and server support for partial requests. | Also depends on server support; the manager cannot guarantee a resume. |
| Adjust connection behavior | Controls vary by browser. | Some programs expose settings such as connection counts, bandwidth limits, or proxy options. |
The standalone options in the table are documented features of Internet Download Manager (IDM), not a checklist every product in this software category necessarily meets. IDM’s official documentation describes browser integration, URL and clipboard handling, queues, scheduling, categories, connection settings, download limits, save locations, and proxy options: IDM features and IDM help.

Does a download manager make downloads faster?
Not necessarily. Some managers split a file into segments and use available connections to request them. That approach may help under some conditions, but the result depends on the source server, network, and available bandwidth. The term “download manager” by itself makes no promise about speed.
Tonec FZE, IDM’s publisher, claims its product can increase download speeds “by up to 500 percent.” That is a vendor claim, not an independently verified benchmark: the reviewed product page gives no test method or comparison setup. It should not be treated as a general expectation for download managers. See IDM’s product page.

Why resuming a download is not guaranteed
Resuming means requesting the remaining portion of a file instead of downloading it from the beginning. For HTTP downloads, this typically relies on byte-range requests. The server may support and honor those requests, but support is optional. If it does not, a manager may be unable to continue the partial download. IDM’s help documentation likewise makes its Resume control conditional on support from the remote server: IDM’s resume help. The HTTP standard describes range requests in RFC 9110.
When you need a separate download manager
For ordinary file downloads, a browser’s built-in handling is often enough. Consider a standalone manager if you specifically want to organize many transfers, queue or schedule them, capture downloads from a browser, or adjust connection and bandwidth controls offered by a particular program. Check that the features you need are documented for the software you choose; they are not all inherent to the category.
