Internet Down or Wi-Fi Trouble? Find the Failing Link

Compare the same task across devices, locations, and wired versus Wi-Fi connections to narrow down whether the trouble is your device, wireless network, equipment, or internet provider.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To tell whether the trouble is your Wi-Fi, router, modem, or internet provider, compare the same task on another device, near the router, and—if possible—over Ethernet. If several devices fail on both Wi-Fi and a wired connection, check the provider’s outage and diagnostic tools before blaming a particular box. No single symptom or light pattern proves that a modem or router is defective.

First establish what is failing

Check whether the problem affects one device or several, and whether it affects one app or site or all internet use. Try the same task on a second device connected to your home network. On a phone, confirm that Wi-Fi is actually carrying the connection rather than cellular data.

A single-device problem points first toward that device’s network connection or software. A single app or site failing while other internet use works is different from a home-wide connection failure; it does not, by itself, implicate the modem or router. Google notes that connection performance can vary with the client device, distance, Wi-Fi band, and barriers (Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance).

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection

Repeat the same task close to the router. If practical, connect a computer to a router LAN port with Ethernet and test again. Microsoft describes connecting a Windows PC to a home router by Ethernet in its Windows network connection guidance. Use the same device and task where possible so the comparison is meaningful.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Wired works, Wi-Fi struggles: investigate wireless range, interference, router placement, obstacles, mesh configuration, or the client’s Wi-Fi capability. Better results near the router also suggest a coverage or local wireless issue.
  • Wi-Fi works near the router but not in the usual room: distance, walls and other barriers, the selected band, and nearby wireless activity are plausible factors.
  • Multiple devices fail on both wired and Wi-Fi: move on to the physical connection path and provider checks. This result raises suspicion beyond Wi-Fi, but does not prove a modem failure; cabling, gateway settings, the router’s WAN connection, and the provider’s service can also be involved.

Google identifies distance, barriers, Wi-Fi band, client capability, nearby interference, household demand, delivered ISP speed, and Ethernet cable or port limits as factors that can affect connection performance (Wi-Fi troubleshooting; Google’s guidance on connection speed).

Trace the connection from the wall to your device

Check the equipment’s power, then follow the path your setup uses: the provider’s incoming cable, DSL line, or fiber feed reaches a modem, gateway, or fiber ONT; a separate modem connects by Ethernet to the router’s WAN port; the router then connects to your device over Wi-Fi or a LAN port. A gateway combines modem and router functions, so there may not be two separate boxes to diagnose.

  1. Confirm each device is powered and that its power cable is seated.
  2. Check that the provider feed is firmly attached to the modem, gateway, or ONT. Google’s setup instructions likewise begin by checking the modem’s connection to the cable, DSL, or fiber source (Google Nest Wifi setup and troubleshooting).
  3. If modem and router are separate, check the Ethernet cable from a modem LAN port to the router’s WAN port. Reseat visible plugs and look for obvious cable damage.
  4. If testing by Ethernet, use a router LAN port for the computer. Avoid changing settings while diagnosing; note the current setup first so you can restore it if needed.

Ethernet performance depends on both ends and the cable. For Nest Wifi and Google Wifi specifically, Google states that the Ethernet ports support 10/100/1000 Mbps and that the slowest component limits the connection; it recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for speeds above 100 Mbps (Google’s connection-speed guidance). These specifications should not be assumed for other router models.

Check provider status before resetting equipment

Use your internet provider’s outage page or diagnostic tool, if available. Provider tools can check service conditions or equipment provisioning that a Wi-Fi indicator alone cannot reveal. Xfinity offers outage lookup and online troubleshooting, which can lead to technician scheduling (Xfinity service status). Verizon also provides outage and service troubleshooting through its support resources (Verizon residential support). Availability and results may depend on your account and region.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Then restart equipment using the sequence for your provider and model. A restart is not a factory reset. Google’s modem procedure says to disconnect power and, in that procedure, Ethernet; wait until the lights are off, reconnect, and wait for the Internet light before testing (Google Nest Wifi troubleshooting). Other providers and equipment may require different steps. Restart time also varies: Xfinity says restarting its gateway can take up to 12 minutes (Xfinity service status).

Do not factory-reset equipment casually. A factory reset can erase network and provider-specific settings, making recovery harder; use it only when the equipment maker or provider directs you and you have the information needed to set it up again.

Read status lights only for your exact equipment

Look up the light meanings in the manual or support instructions for your specific modem, router, gateway, or ONT and service type. Color, blinking, and solid patterns are not universal. For example, Verizon’s guide treats a blinking high-speed internet light differently from solid lights with no access, but that example is specific to the equipment and service covered by that guide (Verizon support). Do not use another model’s LED pattern as proof of a fault.

Decide whether to contact the ISP or device maker

  • One device fails while others work: check that device’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and troubleshoot its network settings or software.
  • Wireless is poor but Ethernet works: focus on router or mesh placement, distance, obstructions, interference, and client capability.
  • Several devices fail over Wi-Fi and Ethernet: check provider status, then contact the ISP if the issue persists. Ask it to check the line and equipment provisioning; household tests cannot isolate every upstream cause.
  • The provider reports service is healthy, but the fault remains: contact the equipment maker with the model, firmware version if known, network layout, status-light behavior, and results of the wired and near-router tests.

When contacting the ISP, provide your service type (cable, DSL, or fiber), equipment model, the lights you observed, the outage-tool result, and whether a wired test failed. Repeatable results help support distinguish a local wireless problem from a fault farther upstream.

Replace equipment only after checking compatibility

A slow connection, a blinking light, or one failed test is not enough to identify a defective modem or router. If a provider or equipment maker confirms that hardware is at fault, check that any replacement supports your service type and is compatible with the provider before buying. The correct replacement for a cable setup may not suit DSL or fiber, and some fiber installations use a separate ONT rather than a conventional modem.
