A local area network (LAN) connects devices in a limited local setting, such as a room, home, or office. In a simple wired LAN, four computers plug into one Ethernet switch. The switch lets them communicate locally; it does not, by itself, connect them to the internet.
What is a network?
A network is a set of connected devices that can exchange data. The connection may be wired or wireless, and the devices might be computers, phones, printers, or other equipment.
A LAN is a network for a local area. “Local” describes the scope of the network, not whether it has internet access. A LAN can work on its own, or it can connect through a router to other networks.
How do four computers make a wired LAN?
Imagine four computers in one room. Run an Ethernet cable from each computer to a port on a central Ethernet switch. The computers and switch now form a basic wired LAN.

- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Computers: The devices that send and receive data.
- Ethernet cables: The physical links between each computer and the switch. Cat 5 and Cat 6 patch cables are among the options used for end-device-to-switch connections; the suitable category depends on the equipment and installation. Cisco’s Ethernet auto-negotiation guidance discusses these cable options.
- Ethernet switch: The central device that connects the wired devices and forwards traffic within the LAN.
In this example, the switch is the meeting point. If one computer sends data to another, the switch helps carry it across the local network rather than requiring a direct cable between every pair of computers.
How does an Ethernet switch deliver data?
Ethernet data travels in frames. An Ethernet switch reads a frame’s destination MAC address and checks its learned MAC address table to choose an outgoing port. The table associates MAC addresses with the ports on which the switch has learned those devices.

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
If the switch does not know the destination MAC address, it floods the frame out other ports in the same VLAN. A VLAN is a logical segment of a switched network; traffic is not flooded across every VLAN. Cisco’s overview explains Ethernet switches, MAC addresses, and frame forwarding.
This corrects a common simplification: the switch does not need to inspect an IP packet to make its basic Ethernet forwarding decision. It uses the destination MAC address in the Ethernet frame.

Is a LAN the same as the internet?
No. A LAN connects devices locally. The internet is the much wider network of interconnected networks. A switch can let computers in the same LAN communicate, but that alone does not provide a path to the internet.
To reach the internet, a LAN typically also needs a router connected to an internet service. The router links the local network to other networks; the switch provides connections among devices on the LAN. A home router may include switch ports, but the roles are still distinct.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
What comes next: connecting without Ethernet cables
The four-computer example uses cables and a switch to make the local connections. A wireless LAN uses radio rather than an Ethernet cable for device access, commonly through a wireless access point. The connection method changes, but the distinction remains: a local network connects nearby devices, while internet access requires a connection beyond that local network.
