Interlune and Astrolab Are Developing a Lunar Helium-3 Harvester—But Mining Hasn’t Begun

Interlune is developing a lunar helium-3 harvesting system with Astrolab’s FLEX rover platform. The project remains at the prototype and concept-study stage—not an operating mine or near-term fusion fuel supply.

Interlune is developing excavation and processing equipment to recover helium-3 from lunar soil; Astrolab is working on the FLEX rover platform intended to carry that equipment. Their March 3, 2026 agreement was for a concept study and planned hardware testing in Houston—not a report of a working lunar mine. The effort is an early attempt to develop lunar resource technology, not an imminent source of fusion power.

What helium-3 is—and why the Moon matters

Helium-3 is a stable isotope of helium: its nucleus contains two protons and one neutron. It is scarce in ordinary terrestrial helium supplies. Over billions of years, the solar wind has implanted helium-3 into the Moon’s surface soil, or regolith. Lunar soil can contain higher concentrations than typical Earth sources, but the isotope remains dispersed through large amounts of material rather than concentrated in an easy-to-mine deposit.

Interlune says helium-3 concentration is associated with titanium-bearing minerals such as ilmenite and with how mature the regolith is. Those relationships could help identify promising areas, but they do not establish economically recoverable reserves at a particular site. Interlune’s description of its planned mapping payload explains that the camera would use those indicators to estimate concentration indirectly.

Who is building what?

Interlune: excavation and resource processing

Seattle-based Interlune is developing the harvesting system: excavation hardware and the sorting, extraction, and separation stages needed to turn soil into a helium-3 product. The company’s stated process is to excavate regolith, sort it, extract helium-bearing material, then separate helium-3 from other helium isotopes and materials.

Interlune has described a fleet-based approach and says the equipment could also support lunar construction, such as preparing landing areas or moving material for infrastructure. That broader use could matter if resource extraction takes longer to become viable. The companies’ collaboration announcement frames the work as both resource harvesting and infrastructure development.

Astrolab: the rover platform

Hawthorne, California-based Astrolab is developing FLEX, a family of multipurpose planetary rovers. In this project, FLEX is the mobility platform intended to carry Interlune’s specialized excavation payload. A rover can move equipment across the surface and support flexible payloads and remote operations; the announced collaboration does not describe Astrolab as independently developing a complete helium-3 processing system.

Astrolab’s NASA work is separate. NASA selected the company in May 2026 as one of two providers for a crewed lunar rover under its Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services program. That award concerns astronaut transportation and surface mobility; it is not evidence that helium-3 extraction is flight-ready. NASA selection details published by Astrolab describe that distinct program.

Vermeer: excavation expertise

Industrial equipment maker Vermeer Corporation has worked with Interlune on the excavator prototype and high-volume, continuous excavation technology. Its involvement brings terrestrial excavation expertise, but it does not mean a conventional Earth machine can simply be sent to the Moon. Lunar equipment must contend with vacuum, low gravity, abrasive and electrostatically active dust, extreme thermal conditions, limited power, and difficult maintenance.

How the proposed harvester would work

  1. Excavate: Collect regolith continuously. Interlune says its design aims to limit traction demands, power use, and dust compared with conventional trenching; these are design goals, not demonstrated lunar performance.
  2. Sort: Separate or concentrate material likely to contain more helium. Mapping indicators such as titanium-bearing minerals may help, but the relationship must be confirmed at the eventual operating site.
  3. Extract: Release helium trapped in or associated with mineral grains, likely through thermal processing or another energy-intensive method.
  4. Separate: Isolate helium-3 from helium-4 and other materials. Because the isotopes are chemically almost identical, separation relies on subtle physical differences and specialized processes.

Every stage depends on the others. High excavation throughput has little value if the soil is poor in helium-3, extraction consumes too much power, or isotope separation cannot produce a transportable product reliably.

What has been demonstrated—and what has not

Milestone What it establishes What it does not establish
Full-scale excavator prototype, unveiled May 7, 2025 Interlune and Vermeer have built a terrestrial demonstrator. Interlune says it is designed to ingest up to 100 metric tons of regolith per hour. The throughput is a company specification for an Earth prototype, not measured lunar capacity or proof of a complete operating mine. Prototype announcement.
Component and simulated-environment work Interlune reports subscale excavation tests, sorting and extraction component tests, lunar-regolith simulants, and parabolic-flight experiments simulating lunar gravity. These tests do not show a complete autonomous system operating on the Moon.
FLIP multispectral camera announcement, August 5, 2025 A planned rover payload is intended to estimate helium-3 concentration indirectly from surface characteristics. Mapping is not direct proof of reserves, extraction yield, or economic viability. Payload announcement.
FLEX integration concept study, March 3, 2026 Interlune and Astrolab agreed to study integrating the excavation hardware with FLEX and planned hardware testing in Houston. A concept study and planned ground testing are not a lunar deployment. Collaboration announcement.
Cold Capture terrestrial separation, announced July 20, 2026 Interlune says its cryogenic technology produced a 99%-pure helium-3 stream from domestic helium. It estimates that broad deployment across applicable U.S. facilities could yield up to 2.5 kilograms annually. The purity and potential output are company claims; the annual figure is a projection, not current production, and does not validate lunar extraction. Cold Capture announcement.

In the cited company announcements, no commercial-scale lunar excavation, industrial return of lunar helium-3, or helium-3 fusion electricity is demonstrated. Interlune says it aims to return industrial quantities in the 2030s, but that is a company target rather than a confirmed delivery schedule. The planned camera could improve resource estimates; it cannot by itself prove that mining will pay.

Why lunar extraction is difficult

  • Dilute material: A machine may need to process very large quantities of soil to obtain a small quantity of helium-3. The useful concentration and required soil throughput at a specific site remain uncertain.
  • Dust and wear: Fine lunar dust is abrasive and electrostatically active. It can threaten moving parts, seals, optics, radiators, and nearby equipment.
  • Power and heat: Excavation, thermal release, and cryogenic separation all require energy and thermal control. A mission would need a site-specific power plan; sunlight, storage through lunar night, and possible nuclear power are not interchangeable assumptions.
  • Autonomy and repair: A remote machine must work for long periods with limited human intervention. A failure that would be routine to fix on Earth could end a lunar operation.
  • Transport chain: Product must be stored, transferred, launched from the Moon, and delivered to Earth. Each step adds equipment, cost, risk, and mission dependencies.

Is helium-3 a practical energy source?

Near-term interest: cryogenic and specialized uses

The nearer-term rationale is not electricity generation. Helium-3 is used in dilution refrigerators that cool superconducting quantum-computing hardware to temperatures near absolute zero, and it has medical-imaging, scientific, sensor, and national-security applications. Interlune’s terrestrial Cold Capture work also points to Earth-based recovery as a possible supply route for specialized demand.

Terrestrial recovery and recycling are important comparisons: they avoid landing machinery, operating in lunar conditions, and returning cargo from the Moon. If those sources or alternative cooling technologies can satisfy customers more cheaply, demand alone may not justify lunar mining.

Fusion: a possibility, not a current market

Some proposed fusion reactions involving helium-3 could produce fewer neutrons than conventional deuterium-tritium fusion, which is one reason the isotope attracts energy interest. But commercial fusion electricity is not established, helium-3 fusion requires more demanding conditions than deuterium-tritium fusion, and no lunar helium-3 has been returned for commercial use. Treat fusion as a long-term possibility, not a near-term customer or a reason to describe the Moon as an imminent fuel supply.

What would make the business case credible?

A lunar mine needs more than a promising isotope and a working excavator prototype. The key tests are whether a reachable site has useful concentrations, how much soil must be processed for each unit of product, how much energy the full chain consumes, and whether the equipment can survive and operate autonomously for long periods.

It also needs a mission architecture for landing, power, communications, storage, and return transport, plus customers willing to pay enough to support that infrastructure. Multi-purpose rovers and excavation equipment could spread costs across construction and mobility work, while a specialized mining vehicle might be more efficient at extraction but depend on a narrower market. The relevant question is not simply whether helium-3 exists on the Moon, but whether it can be delivered at a cost and scale that beat alternatives.

What could happen next

The development path would need to move from resource mapping to a demonstration landing, then to excavation and regolith processing, product storage, and ultimately sample return before industrial-scale operations could be assessed. Each step has to succeed before the next can substantiate a commercial claim. Interlune’s stated 2030s goal for returning industrial quantities should be read as an ambition, not a scheduled outcome.

For now, the Interlune–Astrolab effort is best understood as work on a modular lunar mobility and excavation system, with helium-3 as one potential product and infrastructure services as another possible use. The technology has terrestrial prototypes and announced plans, but a lunar mine and an energy supply chain remain unproven.
