Where can I find interesting public APIs for a JavaScript project?
API directories are useful for discovery, not due diligence. The public-api-lists project is a community-curated catalog with category browsing, contribution guidance, a JSON API, and metadata fields for authentication, HTTPS, and CORS. Find Public APIs offers another route: its directory combines attributed catalogs, researched guides, and an in-browser request playground.

Use a directory to generate candidates, then open the provider’s own documentation. A listing does not establish that an endpoint is available, reliable, suitable for production, or allowed for your intended use. Catalog details and provider policies can change.

Which APIs can I call directly from browser JavaScript?
Check CORS support for the exact endpoint you intend to call. A directory’s CORS field can help you shortlist options, but the provider’s documentation and endpoint behavior are the decisive checks. If the server does not permit requests from your site’s origin, browser JavaScript cannot bypass that restriction; a server-side integration may be needed instead.

Browser and Node.js requests also have different security implications. A browser request exposes its code and any credentials embedded in it to users, so never put a private API key or secret in frontend JavaScript. For credentials that must remain private, make the request from a server you control and return only the necessary data to the browser.
Do I need an API key?
Authentication requirements vary by provider and endpoint. Check the documentation for whether a key is required, how it is sent, and whether credentials differ between development and production. “No key” describes authentication only; it does not mean the service is free, unrestricted, or available for commercial use. Find Public APIs’ FAQ makes that distinction explicit.

Can I use a free API in a commercial project?
Do not infer commercial permission from a free tier or a lack of authentication. Read the provider’s current terms and license, and confirm any usage limits, attribution requirements, data restrictions, and rules for redistribution or commercial use.

- Access: Is authentication required, and can the request run in a browser or does it need a server?
- Terms and cost: What usage limits or paid tiers apply, and do the terms permit your intended use?
- Fit and data: Does the API provide the fields, location coverage, time range, and update cadence your project needs?
- Documentation: Are parameters, response formats, errors, and version changes explained?
- Operational risk: Can you check rate limits and service status, reach support, and provide a fallback if the API is unavailable?
The directories discussed here do not establish a comparable, verified uptime record for listed APIs, so they cannot support a reliability ranking. Evaluate operational suitability with provider information and a fallback plan rather than directory presence alone.
How do I make my first request with fetch?
For a learning example, JSONPlaceholder documents a fake REST API intended for testing, prototyping, and learning. Its guide includes browser-style JavaScript examples and resources such as users, posts, comments, albums, photos, and todos. The following request follows its documented public example:
Rank #4
fetch("https://api.jsonplaceholder.dev/posts")
.then(response => {
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`HTTP error: ${response.status}`);
}
return response.json();
})
.then(posts => console.log(posts))
.catch(error => console.error("Request failed:", error));
The first promise receives a Response; checking response.ok catches HTTP error statuses before parsing the body. Calling response.json() reads and parses the JSON response, and the final handler reports network or parsing errors. The guide documents GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE, but documented methods are not evidence of persistent production storage.
JSONPlaceholder is a practice service with fake sample data, not a dependable source of live product data. Its guide also describes running a local development version by cloning the server repository, installing with Bun, and starting the server. For request exploration, it provides separate Postman collections for public and local endpoints and names cURL, Insomnia, HTTPie, and a VS Code REST Client extension as alternatives. See the JSONPlaceholder guide and its server repository for the documented instructions and examples.

What changes when an API is meant for a real product?
A useful contrast with a no-key learning endpoint is OpenWeather: its official API page describes services for current conditions, forecasts, historical data, air quality, and maps, and directs developers to obtain an API key. The page describes both free and paid subscription availability for current-weather data. Check the current provider documentation for applicable plans and terms; availability and pricing can change.
Before shipping any integration, confirm the current endpoint, authentication method, CORS behavior if calling from a browser, limits, error responses, and terms. Decide what your application should do when the provider times out, changes its response, or stops serving the endpoint. A working demo proves only that a request worked in that context—not that the API is ready to support a live feature.
