Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) Protocol: Definition and How It Works

IBC is an open-source standard that lets independent blockchains exchange verified data. Here is how its clients, relayers, packets, and applications fit together, and what its security depends on.

The Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol is an open-source standard that lets separate blockchains exchange data by verifying each other’s state and passing packets of application data between them. It is a shared communication layer, not a single bridge operator and not one end-user application. How safe any given IBC connection is depends on the client and verification model it uses, so the protocol name alone does not tell you the trust assumptions of a particular link.

What IBC standardizes

IBC defines how two independent ledgers can trust facts about each other without sharing a validator set or a common operator. The official protocol site describes IBC as an open-source interoperability protocol, with the Cosmos team as a primary contributor and maintainer since its launch, working alongside open-source contributors to maintain the protocol and extend its functionality (IBC Protocol, “About the Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol”).

The protocol standardizes the transport layer. What the transported bytes mean, such as a token transfer or a cross-chain contract call, is decided by the application on each chain. That separation is the core idea behind the design.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
  • IBC Clients track and verify the state of the counterparty chain.
  • IBC Core handles packet transport, routing, and authentication against the client.
  • IBC Applications implement the business logic for a specific cross-chain workflow.

Because Core only moves and authenticates packets, the same transport can carry many different applications without the protocol defining their rules.

How a connection is built in IBC Classic

The IBC Classic model, also called IBC v1 in the official Classic documentation, links two chains through four objects (IBC Protocol, “How IBC Classic Works”).

Clients

Each chain keeps a light client that represents its counterparty. The client stores the counterparty’s consensus state and provides functions to verify claims about that chain’s state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connections

A connection associates the client on one chain with the client on the other, so both ends agree on which counterparty they are talking to and how it is verified.

Channels

Channels connect application modules on the two chains and carry packets. A channel is where a specific application’s traffic flows.

Relayers

Relayers are off-chain processes. They observe chain state and submit the transactions needed to advance packet flows, including the proofs that the receiving chain checks. Relayers move messages; they do not decide whether a packet is valid, because the receiving chain’s client verifies that.

How a packet moves

Every cross-chain message is a packet with a defined lifecycle (IBC Protocol, “How IBC Classic Works”). In practice the sequence looks like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Send. The sending application on chain A commits a packet to its state through its channel.
  2. Receive. A relayer submits the packet and a proof that chain A committed it. Chain B’s Core checks the proof against its client for chain A, then passes the packet bytes to the receiving application.
  3. Acknowledge. The receiving application returns an acknowledgement, and a relayer carries proof of it back to chain A.
  4. Timeout. If the packet is not delivered before its timeout condition, the sending side can process it as timed out instead of waiting indefinitely, so the sending application can reverse its local state change.

The receiving application applies its own state transition after Core has authenticated the packet. Core never interprets what the bytes mean.

What applications can do

The official overview names two current application types (IBC Protocol home page):

Interchain Fungible Token Transfer (IFT)

IFT moves tokens between chains. Exact behavior, such as how tokens are escrowed or minted on arrival, depends on the application implementation on each chain.

General Message Passing (GMP)

GMP carries arbitrary cross-chain contract calls, so one chain can ask an application on another chain to execute an action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom applications

Developers can write their own application that implements the IBC application interface, which is how workflows beyond token transfer are built.

The home page also lists Interchain Accounts and Interchain Queries as ecosystem features. These are application-level capabilities built on top of IBC, not part of the protocol definition itself.

Security depends on the connection

Light-client verification is central to IBC’s security model, and the protocol’s client abstraction allows other verification methods. Those methods carry different assumptions, so two connections that both say “IBC” can rest on different trust bases. Before relying on a specific connection, check:

  • Which client type is in use on each side, and which chain’s consensus it verifies.
  • What evidence the client checks, and how updates are submitted to it.
  • What conditions freeze or halt the client, and who can trigger them.
  • Whether the connection is between two chains that run IBC natively or uses an intermediary implementation.

Version What the official sources say Date and status
IBC Classic (IBC v1) Clients, connections, channels, and relayers, as described above. Originally deployed in 2021 (official Classic overview).
IBC v2 A simplified evolution that uses clients, a router, and applications, and keeps packet send, receive, acknowledgement, and timeout semantics while simplifying setup. Aimed at lowering implementation overhead and supporting more diverse ledger architectures. Announced February 20, 2025 (IBC v2 announcement). The announcement is a dated statement of design, not proof that every chain runs it.

To confirm whether a specific chain supports IBC v2 today, check that chain’s own implementation and deployment documentation. A general protocol announcement does not establish live support on any particular network.

Adoption figures and their dates

The protocol’s own history page publishes the following figures (IBC Protocol, “About”). They are historical and self-reported, not independently audited current totals:

  • $30 billion in transaction volume and 50 million transfers, reported for 2022.
  • 107 IBC-enabled chains, a count the page describes as at the end of 2023.
  • 124 developers who contributed to IBC repositories in 2023.

Do not cite these as today’s network statistics. Current chain counts and volumes require a newer source.

How IBC compares with other interoperability approaches

When comparing IBC with a bridge or another messaging system, these dimensions give the most useful picture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Verification model and trust assumptions. Whether the destination verifies source-chain state directly through a light client, or relies on an external set of signers or operators.
  • Native receipts and acknowledgements. Whether packets carry built-in delivery confirmation that the sending chain can check.
  • Supported application workflows. Which token and message patterns are available out of the box, and what custom applications require.
  • Relaying and liveness. Who runs relayers, what happens if none are running, and how packets time out.
  • Implementation requirements. What each chain must build or run to join.

Comparative claims published by any single project, including the IBC project’s own comparison material, should be checked against independent documentation before you draw firm conclusions about competitors.

In short, IBC is the transport and verification standard; the application you use on top of it determines what actually moves between chains.
