It provides up to 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes through the chipset, while compatible Xeon 600 processors provide up to 128 CPU-attached PCIe 5.0 lanes—a separate connection pool. The exact slots, memory configuration and ports depend on the processor and motherboard a system uses.
What is the Intel W890 chipset?
W890 is Intel’s workstation chipset in its Intel 800 Series Desktop Chipsets lineup. Intel lists its marketing status as Launched and its launch date as Q1 2026. Intel’s February 2, 2026 announcement positions it with the Xeon 600 workstation processors as the platform for high-end workstations. Intel W890 specifications · Intel’s Xeon 600 launch announcement

How many PCIe lanes does W890 have?
Intel lists up to 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes from the W890 chipset, configurable as x1, x2 or x4 connections, plus up to eight DMI 4.0 lanes. Separately, Intel says Xeon 600 workstation processors support up to 128 CPU-attached PCIe 5.0 lanes. These figures describe different platform connections; do not add them together as though they were identical lanes or one interchangeable pool. The motherboard determines how its chipset and CPU connections are routed to slots and onboard devices.
What memory and I/O does W890 support?
Intel lists ECC support and two DIMMs per channel at the chipset level. For the Xeon 600 platform, Intel separately specifies support for up to eight channels of DDR5 RDIMM at 6,400 MT/s and DDR5 MRDIMM at up to 8,000 MT/s. Those are platform-level maximums, not a promise that every processor and board supports every memory type, speed, capacity or population. Check the selected CPU’s specifications and the motherboard’s memory support list and population rules.

Which motherboard uses W890?
Intel named the ASUS Pro WS W890E-SAGE SE in its Xeon 600 launch announcement, paired with a Xeon 698X processor. That establishes a specific W890 motherboard model, but does not establish its current stock or the support details for every component. Confirm CPU support and required BIOS, memory type and capacity, slot wiring, storage and I/O, networking, power delivery, case compatibility and vendor support in the board’s own documentation.
Which W890 features are configuration-dependent?
Intel lists support for VT-d, Trusted Execution Technology and Boot Guard, and identifies the platform as eligible for Intel vPro Enterprise. Intel cautions that features may not be available on every system and directs customers to check with the system vendor. Treat these as platform support claims, not a guarantee that a particular workstation enables or includes every feature.
