Qualcomm is the clearer choice for investors prioritizing currently reported earnings; Intel is the higher-risk bet on a product recovery and foundry execution. Neither is an unconditional buy. Intel’s second-quarter 2026 results combined strong revenue growth and positive non-GAAP earnings with a substantial GAAP loss and rising investment. Qualcomm remained GAAP-profitable in its third fiscal quarter, though revenue and earnings declined year over year. The better fit depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and the price you pay.
Intel and Qualcomm at a glance
The latest company results discussed here cover different periods: Intel’s second quarter of calendar 2026 and Qualcomm’s third quarter of fiscal 2026. Their figures are not perfectly like-for-like, but they show the distinction between the two investment cases.

| Measure | Intel | Qualcomm |
|---|---|---|
| Reported period and source | Q2 2026; Intel earnings release and quarterly filing | Q3 fiscal 2026; Qualcomm earnings release and quarterly filing |
| Revenue | $16.1 billion, up 25% year over year | $9.947 billion, down 4% year over year |
| Diluted EPS | $0.42 non-GAAP; GAAP loss of $2.16 | $1.87 GAAP; $2.21 non-GAAP |
| Notable business detail | Intel Foundry reported $5.8 billion in segment revenue, including intersegment activity | QCT semiconductor revenue fell 5%; automotive and IoT partly offset lower handset revenue |
| Central investment question | Can product momentum and manufacturing execution produce durable profitability, including external foundry demand? | Can automotive, IoT and other non-handset businesses grow while the company sustains its handset and licensing economics? |
EPS figures use different accounting bases where marked; Intel’s GAAP loss and non-GAAP profit are not contradictory—they reflect different accounting treatments. Qualcomm’s GAAP and non-GAAP figures also should not be compared as if they were the same measure.

What Intel’s results say about its stock
Revenue growth is strong, but earnings depend on the measure
Intel reported Q2 revenue of $16.1 billion, up 25% year over year. Client Computing and Physical AI Group revenue was $8.9 billion, up 13%, while Data Center and AI revenue was $6.3 billion, up 59%. The company reported a 40.4% GAAP gross margin and a 41.8% non-GAAP gross margin. Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $0.42, but GAAP diluted EPS was a loss of $2.16. Investors should examine the reconciliation and the reasons for the gap rather than treating the adjusted figure as a substitute for the GAAP result.

Foundry revenue is not the same as outside-customer sales
Intel Foundry reported $5.8 billion of Q2 segment revenue, up 31%. That segment total includes intersegment transactions. Intel’s quarterly filing reported $5.5 billion in intersegment eliminations for the quarter, with intersegment revenue mostly tied to Intel 18A, Intel 3 and Intel 4 wafer volumes. As a result, the $5.8 billion segment figure should not be read as $5.8 billion of revenue from external foundry customers.
The upside case requires capital-intensive execution
Intel’s thesis rests on sustaining demand for its products and executing across CPU offerings, process technology, yields, manufacturing capacity and any external foundry business. The company said it was meaningfully increasing investment in equipment, clean-room space and substrates. That spending may support future capacity and products, but it also raises the stakes: growth must eventually translate into sustainable returns on the capital committed. The available figures do not establish a definitive foundry break-even date or prove the scale of future external demand.

For Q3 2026, Intel guided to revenue of $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $0.38. Guidance is management’s forecast, not a reported result. It can help investors judge near-term expectations, but it does not settle whether the longer-term manufacturing strategy will succeed.
What Qualcomm’s results say about its stock
Positive GAAP earnings, alongside a year-over-year decline
Qualcomm reported Q3 fiscal 2026 revenue of $9.947 billion, down 4% year over year. GAAP diluted EPS was $1.87, down 23%, and non-GAAP diluted EPS was $2.21. These results offer a clearer current GAAP earnings profile than Intel’s reported Q2, but they are not evidence of uninterrupted growth.

Qualcomm’s QCT business sells semiconductor products, while QTL earns licensing revenue; QSI covers strategic investments. In the quarter, QCT revenue declined 5%, pressured by lower handset revenue and partly offset by automotive and IoT. QTL revenue declined 3%. The company also reported that combined QCT automotive and IoT revenue grew 28% year over year. This mix matters: growth outside handsets is developing, but the quarter’s overall results still reflected weakness in a major market.
Diversification is a goal, not a completed transition
Qualcomm management set a target of $40 billion in non-handset revenue by fiscal 2029 and forecast that year-over-year non-handset growth, including data center, would accelerate from 24% in fiscal 2026 to more than 60% in fiscal 2027. Those are management targets and expectations, not realized or guaranteed revenue. The investment case depends on execution in areas such as automotive, IoT and data center while protecting the economics of the existing businesses.

Risks that could change the comparison
Intel: manufacturing progress must produce durable economics
- Foundry execution: Process, yield and capacity progress must translate into sustainable profitability and customer demand, not just internal activity.
- Investment burden: Higher spending on equipment, clean rooms and substrates increases capital exposure while returns remain uncertain.
- Accounting and segment interpretation: Keep GAAP results distinct from non-GAAP measures, and distinguish foundry segment revenue from external-customer revenue.
Qualcomm: handset exposure and customer risks remain
Qualcomm’s filing identifies risks including handset and customer concentration, customers developing modem technology internally, significant China exposure amid U.S.-China tensions, memory supply and pricing constraints, supplier capacity limits, and semiconductor cyclicality. It says Apple already uses its own modem in certain phones and Qualcomm expects Apple’s use to increase over time. These disclosures identify vulnerabilities; they do not establish that a particular customer shift or supply disruption will occur on a specific schedule.

A share price alone does not show whether a stock is cheap. Valuation requires a consistent date and comparable earnings definitions, as well as consideration of share count, cash and debt. The available October 2026 figures are useful context, but they do not make a synchronized, same-basis comparison.

Which stock may fit your approach?
Qualcomm may suit investors seeking a more visible earnings base
Qualcomm’s positive GAAP EPS in the reported quarter and its established semiconductor and licensing businesses may appeal to investors who place more weight on current reported profitability. The trade-off is that revenue and EPS declined year over year, handset exposure remains important, and management’s diversification targets still need to be achieved.
Intel may suit investors willing to accept greater execution uncertainty
Intel’s revenue growth and reported gains in client and data-center businesses may interest investors who believe its product and manufacturing efforts can improve its long-term position. The counterweight is substantial: Q2 GAAP EPS was negative, foundry segment revenue includes internal transactions, and the company is increasing investment while the returns on that spending remain uncertain.

Use a decision checklist, not a single headline number
- Set a time horizon that matches the thesis: Intel’s manufacturing and capacity story depends on execution over time; Qualcomm’s diversification plan also extends beyond a single quarter.
- Decide how much GAAP earnings variability and capital-investment risk you can tolerate.
- Track whether Intel’s growth converts into sustainable profitability and external foundry business, rather than relying on segment revenue alone.
- Track whether Qualcomm’s non-handset businesses grow as management expects and whether handset and licensing performance remains resilient.
- Compare current valuations using the same date, forecast period and earnings basis; do not treat analyst targets as intrinsic value or a promised return.
