Intel combines chip design with substantial internal manufacturing through Intel Foundry, while AMD primarily designs and sells processors and accelerators made by outside foundries. That difference changes capital requirements, supply-chain exposure, execution risk and the way investors should interpret growth.
Intel reported $52.853 billion of fiscal 2025 revenue, slightly below 2024. AMD reported $34.6 billion, up 34% year over year. The figures describe different historical outcomes, not which stock is better: a useful comparison also requires profitability, cash generation, balance-sheet strength, valuation and the expectations already reflected in each share price. Current valuation multiples and share prices are not established here.

What you are actually comparing
A stock comparison starts with the operating businesses behind the tickers. Intel Corporation sells products such as PC and data-center processors and is also building Intel Foundry as an internal and external manufacturing business. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) designs products for data centers, PCs, gaming and embedded markets, but relies on third-party foundries and suppliers to manufacture them.
That creates a central trade-off:
- Intel carries more manufacturing ownership risk. It must fund process technology, factories and equipment, achieve acceptable yields and fill that capacity with competitive products or foundry customers.
- AMD carries more external-capacity risk. It avoids most leading-edge factory investment but depends on outside manufacturing capacity, supplier availability, lead times and the geopolitical stability of those sources.
Neither model is automatically superior. The relevant question is whether the market price compensates you for the risks and opportunities in each model. Revenue announcements alone cannot answer that question.

Intel’s Q1 2026 filing puts its manufacturing challenge plainly: “The design, development and manufacturing of leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing process technologies, or nodes, is risky and capital-intensive, and it takes years for capital investments to yield a return.” The same filing says Intel intends to invest in future nodes and facilities where it sees an acceptable return.
Start with scale, growth and comparable definitions
Use fiscal-year results and company attribution before drawing conclusions. Intel’s and AMD’s segment structures are not identical, so a segment-to-segment comparison can mislead.
| Measure | Intel | AMD | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2025 net revenue | $52.853 billion, down from $53.101 billion in fiscal 2024 | $34.6 billion, up 34% from $25.8 billion in 2024 | Intel was larger by reported revenue; AMD grew faster. Neither figure is earnings, cash flow or valuation. |
| Data-center result | Intel reported higher Data Center and AI revenue in 2025, which helped offset lower Client Computing revenue; a directly comparable consolidated segment figure is not stated here. | $16.6 billion, up 32% from $12.6 billion, primarily attributed to EPYC processors and Instinct GPUs | AMD’s disclosed growth rate shows strong data-center momentum, but product mix and accounting definitions differ. |
| PC, gaming and client result | Lower Client Computing revenue in 2025 contributed to the overall decline. | Client and Gaming revenue of $14.6 billion, up 51% from $9.6 billion | AMD combines client and gaming; Intel reports Client Computing separately, so the categories are not like-for-like. |
| Embedded | Not presented as an equivalent standalone figure in the supplied Intel disclosures. | $3.5 billion, down 3% from 2024 | AMD’s mixed segment performance shows that growth is not uniform across end markets. |
| Reported segment profitability | Intel Products operating income of $12.739 billion and a reported segment operating margin of 26% in 2025 | Comparable AMD segment figures are not stated in the supplied disclosures | Intel’s segment figures include intersegment financial activity and are not directly comparable with AMD’s differently defined segments. |
Intel’s 2025 revenue decline was $248 million year over year. Its filing says higher Data Center and AI revenue largely offset lower Client Computing revenue. AMD’s 34% increase was attributed primarily to Data Center and Client and Gaming. These are useful starting points, but the next step is to ask how durable the growth is, how much profit it produces and what investment it requires.
Compare the manufacturing models and capital intensity
Intel: an integrated design-and-manufacturing bet
Intel’s strategy links product competitiveness to its own process technology and factory network. Intel Foundry can manufacture Intel products and is intended to serve external customers as well. The upside is potential control over process timing, integration and supply. The downside is that a delayed node, poor yield or underused factory can damage results for years.
Advanced-node development requires large, long-lived capital commitments. Intel’s Q1 2026 filing warns that it may pause or discontinue 14A and successor nodes if it cannot secure sufficient committed demand through product wins and its own roadmap. In practical terms, investors should ask whether projected wafer demand will be high enough to spread fixed costs and generate an acceptable return before committing to the next node.

- Track node milestones against the company’s stated schedule, not just launch presentations.
- Check whether products using a new node win meaningful volume and achieve competitive performance and power efficiency.
- Examine manufacturing yields, capacity utilization and any charges for delays, unused capacity or equipment.

AMD: a fabless design-and-supply model
AMD designs and sells processors, graphics products and adaptive or embedded solutions while depending on third-party foundries and suppliers for manufacturing and related capacity. This model can reduce direct leading-edge fab investment and let AMD shift production among external partners as technology changes. It also means AMD cannot unilaterally create capacity when demand rises.
For AMD, capacity analysis should cover foundry allocation, packaging, memory and other critical components, not only wafer fabrication. Review lead times, supplier concentration, minimum commitments and the effect of a shortage on the ability to deliver EPYC, Ryzen, Instinct or embedded products. Outsourcing changes the location of the risk; it does not remove supply risk.
The decision framework
| Question | Intel-focused evidence | AMD-focused evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Who funds leading-edge capacity? | Intel funds and operates substantial internal manufacturing and node development. | External foundries and suppliers provide manufacturing capacity. |
| What happens if demand disappoints? | Intel may have underutilized factories, high depreciation and uneconomic node investments. | AMD may face lower orders or commitments, but has less direct fab fixed-cost exposure. |
| What happens if demand surges? | Intel can potentially use internal capacity, subject to wafer and yield constraints. | AMD must secure additional external capacity, packaging and components. |
| What is the key execution test? | Deliver competitive nodes, yields, products and foundry economics on schedule. | Convert design wins and roadmaps into products that external suppliers can deliver at scale. |
Analyze revenue by end market without treating it as a forecast
Intel’s mix
Intel’s fiscal 2025 revenue was broadly stable but slightly lower. Data Center and AI revenue increased enough to largely offset a decline in Client Computing. The combination indicates that Intel’s growth is being pulled toward data-center and AI workloads while its traditional PC exposure remains important and cyclical.
The filing also disclosed internal wafer constraints that limited Intel’s ability to meet demand and anticipated constraints into 2026. This is a company-reported, time-specific condition, not proof of a permanent shortage. When modeling Intel, distinguish demand that the company could not fulfill from demand that did not exist.
AMD’s mix
AMD’s 2025 growth was concentrated in Data Center and Client and Gaming:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Data Center: $16.6 billion, up 32% from $12.6 billion. AMD attributed the increase primarily to EPYC processors and Instinct GPUs.
- Client and Gaming: $14.6 billion, up 51% from $9.6 billion.
- Embedded: $3.5 billion, down 3%.
The embedded decline matters because it demonstrates that a fast-growing company can still experience weakness in a specific end market. Investors should test whether data-center and AI growth offsets cyclicality in PCs, consoles and industrial or communications demand over a full cycle, rather than extrapolating one year’s percentage increase.

- Is growth driven by unit volume, average selling price, product mix or a one-time customer ramp?
- Are customers buying for production deployment or building inventory ahead of expected shortages?
- How much revenue depends on a small number of customers, cloud providers, distributors or platforms?
- Does new revenue carry incremental margin after packaging, memory, software and support costs?
- What happens if AI infrastructure spending slows or PC demand weakens?
Compare profitability, cash generation and capital allocation
Revenue is not a return on invested capital. Intel reported $12.739 billion of Intel Products operating income and a 26% reported segment operating margin in fiscal 2025. Intel cautions that these segment figures include intersegment financial activity. AMD’s comparable segment profitability is not established in the supplied disclosures, and its segment definitions differ, so placing the two percentages side by side would create false precision.
Use consolidated financial statements and several years of trends for the rest of the analysis. A disciplined comparison should include:
- Gross margin: Does product mix support pricing power, or are launch costs and competitive pricing compressing margins?
- Operating margin: Are research, development, sales and manufacturing expenses growing faster than revenue?
- Operating cash flow: Does reported profit convert into cash after working-capital changes?
- Free cash flow: For Intel, subtract the large capital investment needed for factories and process technology; for AMD, include inventory, tooling, packaging commitments and other supply-related spending.
- Balance-sheet resilience: Compare cash, debt maturities, lease obligations and liquidity against the possibility of a downturn.
- Capital allocation: Review investment in new nodes, acquisitions, research and development, buybacks and dividends in the context of returns, not as isolated announcements.
Intel’s manufacturing model can produce greater operating leverage when factories are full and yields are strong, but it can also magnify losses when a node is late or capacity is underused. AMD’s fabless model generally reduces direct factory capital intensity, while its economics remain sensitive to external wafer prices, packaging availability and the cost of securing supply.
Evaluate product competitiveness and execution
Intel’s execution test
Intel’s annual report identifies the risk of falling behind competitors in product performance, manufacturing yields and time to market. The company must execute on both sides of the business: products must win against competing processors and accelerators, and the manufacturing organization must deliver the promised process technology economically.

For 14A and later nodes, treat a roadmap as a set of milestones to verify. Look for evidence of successful design completion, customer commitments, production qualification, yields, volume shipments and acceptable cost. A node that exists technically but lacks sufficient demand may still be uneconomic, which is why Intel’s demand requirement is central to the investment case.
AMD’s execution test
AMD’s 2025 filing describes its Instinct roadmap and software-ecosystem efforts. A roadmap announcement is not the same as durable accelerator revenue. Assess whether customers deploy AMD accelerators at scale, whether software tools and libraries make them practical to use, and whether performance per dollar, power efficiency, availability and support remain competitive.
For CPUs, examine the durability of EPYC and Ryzen design wins, product cadence and pricing. For GPUs and accelerators, separate announced specifications from shipped volume and recurring customer demand. AMD can design a competitive chip and still lose economics if capacity, packaging or software readiness prevents timely delivery.
Map supply-chain, customer and geopolitical risks
Intel’s disclosed exposures
Intel’s 2025 filing reported internal wafer constraints that affected its ability to meet demand and anticipated constraints into 2026. Its Q1 2026 filing also describes potential disruption from regional conflict involving its Israel fabrication facility and development centers. Intel says it lacks insurance for business-interruption losses resulting from war or political violence. These are company-disclosed risks, not independent confirmation that a disruption has occurred.
Geographic concentration matters because a site interruption can affect production, engineering schedules and customer deliveries at the same time. Consider alternate capacity, inventory buffers, logistics routes and the time required to qualify a replacement site or process.
Best Value
AMD’s external-supply and concentration exposures
AMD depends on third-party foundries and suppliers. Review its filing for concentration by foundry, packaging provider, memory supplier and other critical component sources. Also examine customer concentration disclosures rather than inferring dependence from a product announcement or a visible brand partnership.
AMD recorded approximately $440 million in net inventory and related charges tied to U.S. government export controls affecting MI308 data-center GPUs in 2025. This illustrates how regulation can affect inventory economics even when underlying technical demand exists. Future controls could change which products may be shipped to particular markets, alter redesign requirements or leave inventory that cannot be sold as originally planned.
Export controls and geopolitics for both companies
Semiconductor supply chains cross borders, so evaluate restrictions on advanced computing products, manufacturing equipment, technology transfers and end users. For each company, ask:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which products or customers could be affected by a new rule?
- Can the company redesign or license a compliant product, and at what cost?
- Would restrictions create stranded inventory or require reserves?
- Are manufacturing, packaging or engineering sites concentrated in politically sensitive regions?
- How quickly can orders and logistics be redirected?
Use valuation only after understanding the business
A fast-growing company can be a poor investment if the share price assumes even faster growth, wider margins or flawless execution. A slower-growing company can be attractive or unattractive depending on the price and the cash it can generate. Current Intel and AMD share prices and comparable valuation multiples are not established in the supplied material, so no conclusion that either stock is cheap, expensive, a buy or a sell is justified here.
When you have current market data, compare each company with measures appropriate to its business stage:
| Measure | Why it matters for Intel | Why it matters for AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Forward price-to-earnings | Tests whether a manufacturing turnaround and future earnings are already priced in. | Tests whether rapid data-center and AI growth is priced at a sustainable rate. |
| Enterprise value to sales | Useful when near-term earnings are distorted by factory investment or restructuring, but it ignores the cost of reaching profitability. | Helps compare growth expectations, while requiring a margin and cash-flow check. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Must reflect heavy capital spending and the possibility that current investment remains elevated. | Must include inventory and supply commitments, not just accounting earnings. |
| Price-to-growth analysis | Requires a credible recovery trajectory rather than a generic growth assumption. | Requires testing whether 2025 growth rates can persist as comparison periods become harder. |
| Net debt and liquidity | Important for funding nodes and factories through a downturn. | Important for absorbing inventory, supply commitments and product-development costs. |
Build a base, optimistic and adverse case for each company. In Intel’s adverse case, model a delayed node, weak product demand and underutilized factories. In AMD’s adverse case, model tighter foundry capacity, export-control charges, slower AI adoption and a downturn in client, gaming or embedded demand. Then ask whether the current price leaves a margin of safety under the adverse case; do not use a single multiple as a substitute for that work.
A practical comparison workflow
- Define the measurement period. Use fiscal 2025 reported results for the starting point and label every figure as historical, not a forecast.
- Normalize the businesses. Write down Intel’s design-and-manufacturing structure and AMD’s fabless structure before comparing margins or capital spending.
- Build an end-market bridge. Track data center, AI, client, gaming and embedded revenue separately, preserving each company’s definitions.
- Check profitability quality. Reconcile segment results to consolidated operating income, gross margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow.
- Test capacity and execution. For Intel, examine node, yield, utilization and demand milestones. For AMD, examine foundry allocation, packaging, software readiness and product availability.
- Read risk disclosures in context. Distinguish a disclosed possibility, such as an anticipated constraint or geopolitical disruption, from an event the company says has actually occurred.
- Quantify concentration. Review customer, supplier, foundry, geography and product concentration disclosures in each annual or quarterly filing.
- Update regulatory assumptions. Check export-control rules and their effect on products, customers, inventory and redesign costs.
- Gather current market data separately. Obtain the current share price, diluted share count, net debt, consensus estimates and valuation multiples before making an investment judgment.
- Compare expectations, not headlines. Identify what growth, margins, capital spending and execution the price implies, then test whether the company can deliver those assumptions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the larger company safer. Intel’s higher 2025 revenue does not eliminate manufacturing, product or capital-allocation risk.
- Calling faster growth proof of superior value. AMD’s 34% 2025 revenue growth may already be reflected in its valuation, and growth can slow or become less profitable.
- Comparing unlike segments. AMD’s Client and Gaming category and Intel’s Client Computing category do not cover exactly the same products or reporting rules.
- Treating outsourcing as risk-free. AMD’s external foundry dependence can create capacity, supplier, packaging and geopolitical vulnerabilities.
- Treating a roadmap as revenue. Intel’s node plans and AMD’s Instinct roadmap require customer adoption, production and economic returns.
- Ignoring capital intensity. Intel’s factory investment can consume cash for years before a return; AMD’s lower fab ownership does not make inventory and supply commitments irrelevant.
- Using one year’s segment growth as a trend. AMD’s 2025 embedded decline and Intel’s client decline show why end markets must be modeled separately.
- Inferring customer dependence from publicity. Use concentration disclosures and revenue data rather than assuming that a named design win represents a material share of sales.
- Making a valuation claim without current inputs. A historical revenue comparison cannot establish that either stock is cheap or expensive.
What to monitor in the next filings
Intel indicators
- 14A and successor-node development, customer commitments and any decision to pause or discontinue a node.
- Wafer capacity, yields, utilization and the duration of the constraints disclosed for 2025 and anticipated into 2026.
- Data Center and AI growth relative to Client Computing performance.
- Intel Foundry customer wins, external volume and returns on invested capital.
- Cash flow after capital expenditures, debt and liquidity available for the manufacturing plan.
- Updates about operations and engineering sites exposed to regional conflict.
AMD indicators
- Data Center revenue and the split between EPYC CPUs, Instinct GPUs and other products.
- Evidence that the Instinct software ecosystem is converting pilots and roadmaps into sustained deployments.
- Foundry, packaging and component capacity, lead times and supplier concentration.
- Additional export-control effects, including reserves, inventory charges or product redesigns.
- Whether Client and Gaming growth remains strong as comparisons become more difficult.
- Embedded demand, which declined 3% in 2025, and the pace of recovery in its end markets.
- Customer concentration and the conversion of revenue growth into operating cash flow.
Bottom line for a fair stock comparison
Intel offers exposure to a high-stakes manufacturing turnaround as well as chip products. Its key questions are whether new nodes arrive on time, achieve competitive yields, attract enough demand and earn acceptable returns while products regain share. AMD offers a faster-growing, primarily fabless business with strong 2025 Data Center and Client and Gaming results. Its key questions are whether external capacity, software execution and supply access can support that growth while export controls, cyclicality and concentration risks remain manageable.
