Intel Quick Sync Settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream at 4K/60 fps, use OBS’s Intel Quick Sync (QSV) encoder if it is available and supports your chosen codec. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/60, or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Those are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations—not proof that your Intel graphics or upload connection can sustain the stream—so test your exact setup before going live.

Check whether your Intel system can use Quick Sync

QSV availability depends on the Intel graphics hardware, driver and OBS installation. OBS documents QSV support for Windows and Linux on systems with Intel HD Graphics and Core-i processors from the 2xxx generation (Sandy Bridge) onward. OBS recommends Core-i 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV generations produced lower image quality. These compatibility references do not guarantee that a particular system can encode 4K/60 reliably.

In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder and look for an Intel Quick Sync option. If it is absent, Intel’s streaming guidance says QSV is not available for that hardware. Update OBS and the Intel graphics driver, then check again; if the option remains absent, use an encoder that is available on your system or reduce the output target.

If your PC has an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, OBS generally recommends its NVENC or AMF encoder instead. That is general guidance, not a rule that QSV can never be useful in a multi-GPU system. Choose based on the encoders actually offered, your workload and the results of a test.

What bitrate for YouTube 4K 60fps?

YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, gives different 4K/2160p60 recommendations by ingestion codec:

Ingestion codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
H.265/HEVC or AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are platform bitrate ranges, not performance guarantees. Confirm that the QSV encoder on your specific graphics generation offers the codec you want. Measure your stable upload capacity and leave headroom for network variation; a connection that only just matches the stream bitrate may not be dependable. Intel likewise advises matching resolution and frame rate to the available upload speed.

H.264 is a straightforward choice when it is the compatible option, but YouTube’s recommended 4K/60 bitrate is higher for H.264 than for HEVC or AV1. Do not select HEVC or AV1 solely to use the lower recommendation: the exact codec availability varies by hardware generation and software support.

Set up Intel Quick Sync in OBS for 4K/60

  1. Update and inspect the encoder list. Install current OBS and graphics drivers, then open Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder. Select Intel Quick Sync only if OBS offers it and the system supports the intended codec and output.
  2. Set the video output. Use 3840×2160 resolution and 60 fps only when your source, encoder and upload path can sustain them. YouTube Live Control Room normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate. To choose resolution manually, YouTube requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
  3. Choose rate control and keyframes. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  4. Enter the codec-specific bitrate. For 4K/2160p60, use YouTube’s recommended 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1 if your encoder and stable upload can sustain it. The listed minimums are 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for HEVC/AV1; minimum does not mean ideal quality or reliable delivery.
  5. Use the standard YouTube connection path. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K/2160p, so 4K streams use normal latency.
  6. Test before the real broadcast. Send a private or unlisted test, check that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and review messages. Include audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast. Watch for OBS encoder overload, dropped frames and unstable upload; if the system cannot sustain the target, lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate.

Hardware encoding can move video encoding work away from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. However, the result depends on the encoder generation: OBS notes that older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at an equivalent bitrate. There is no universal QSV preset or quality setting that is right for every Intel system.

Keep HDR separate from SDR settings

The settings above are for standard SDR. YouTube HDR live streaming requires compatible HDR content and hardware and currently uses HEVC/H.265. YouTube’s OBS setup describes a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, HDR enabled, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. Confirm that your particular QSV hardware and OBS configuration support the complete HDR path before selecting it. YouTube’s reference to Intel 10th Generation graphics or later is tied to compatibility with Mirillis Action! and should not be treated as a universal OBS/QSV compatibility guarantee.

Troubleshoot common Quick Sync problems

Quick Sync does not appear in OBS

  • Check that the machine has supported Intel graphics and that the graphics driver is installed and working.
  • Update OBS and the driver, then inspect Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder again.
  • If QSV is still missing, use another available encoder. OBS’s published Core-i generation floor is not a guarantee of 4K/60 performance or of support for every codec.

The encoder overloads or the stream drops frames

  • Confirm the encoder is set to the intended resolution and frame rate, and that the chosen codec is supported by that QSV implementation.
  • Test with representative motion. If encoding cannot keep up, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and retest.
  • Distinguish encoder overload from network trouble: monitor OBS for encoding or dropped-frame warnings and YouTube for stream-health messages.

YouTube reports poor stream health or an unstable connection

  • Compare the configured bitrate with measured, stable upload capacity, leaving headroom for variation.
  • Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS, then run another preflight test.
  • If the upload cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate. A nominal 4K/60 setting is not useful if the live delivery is unstable.

The received resolution or frame rate is not what you expected

  • Verify OBS output settings and confirm YouTube is receiving the intended signal in Live Control Room.
  • If you need to select resolution manually in YouTube, use a custom stream key with manual settings enabled; otherwise YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a different approach from encoding a live camera or desktop feed in OBS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
