Choose your resolution, frame rate and encoder codec, then compare the stream’s outgoing bitrate with the upload capacity actually available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate; as a planning calculation, that means capacity of at least 1.25 times the bitrate. It is a baseline, not a guarantee against outages.
Upload speed to plan for by resolution and frame rate
The figures below use YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates. The upload-capacity column is calculated by multiplying each bitrate by 1.25 to reflect YouTube’s 20% headroom advice. YouTube does not publish those calculated figures as separate minimum upload-speed thresholds.
| Live resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Calculated upload-capacity planning baseline |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations and arithmetic planning examples current as accessed in 2026. The 1.25 multiplier is an interpretation of the headroom recommendation, not a YouTube-published service threshold. Use the row matching your actual output settings: for example, 1080p60 needs substantially more capacity than 1080p30.
Codec changes the bitrate target
YouTube’s current live settings table also lists AV1/H.265 recommendations. They are 6 Mbps for 720p30/60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 15 Mbps for 1440p30, 24 Mbps for 1440p60, 30 Mbps for 2160p30 and 35 Mbps for 2160p60. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not upload plan requirements. Apply the same 1.25 planning calculation to the bitrate you actually select; do not use the H.264 table if your encoder sends another codec.

Why the advertised internet speed can mislead
Live streaming uses upload capacity: the encoder continuously sends the feed to YouTube. A plan’s advertised download speed does not show whether its upstream capacity is adequate. Even an upload speed test is only a measurement at a moment in time, while a 24/7 stream must sustain its send rate over long periods.
- Check upload capacity, not just download speed.
- Allow for other devices and users consuming upstream bandwidth. The usable capacity for the stream is what remains after that traffic.
- Use sustained measured performance rather than relying only on a plan’s advertised maximum.
- Consider the connection path and local reliability: congestion, a weak physical link and service interruptions can still disrupt a stream.
YouTube Help’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% room for bandwidth. That is why the table’s planning figures exceed the listed video bitrates. Audio also uses some bandwidth: YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for RTMP/RTMPS. The total outgoing stream load includes audio as well as video and transport overhead, so do not treat the video bitrate as the only traffic on the connection.

Calculate capacity for your own stream
- Set the output format. Decide on resolution, frame rate and codec in your streaming encoder.
- Find the matching YouTube live bitrate. Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for the codec and output settings you chose—not its separate guidance for uploading prerecorded videos.
- Apply headroom. Multiply the target bitrate by 1.25 as an arithmetic planning baseline based on YouTube’s 20% room recommendation.
- Compare with available upload capacity. Measure the connection the encoder will use and account for other upstream traffic. If capacity regularly falls below the baseline, lower the bitrate or output settings, or improve the connection before relying on it for continuous streaming.
- If sending to multiple destinations, add the bitrates first. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance gives a 1.5–2× range for the combined target bitrate, especially on shared connections. That guidance is for simulstreaming; it is not a universal rule for a single YouTube stream.
Encoder settings and a realistic stability test
For YouTube live ingestion, the current encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Set the encoder to match the selected bitrate and the format you intend to stream; changing resolution or frame rate can change the bitrate requirement.
- Connect a streaming computer to the router or switch over Ethernet where practical. A wired link can avoid some local wireless variability, but it cannot raise the ISP’s upstream capacity or prevent an ISP outage.
- Run an upload speed test, as YouTube recommends, then test the actual encoder and network under conditions representative of the planned stream.
- Include realistic audio and representative motion in the test. A static screen may not expose problems that appear with the content you will actually send.
- Use an unlisted test stream if appropriate, and monitor YouTube’s Stream health messages while it is live. Treat warnings or unstable delivery as a reason to investigate rather than assuming the speed test settles the issue.
What bandwidth cannot guarantee for a 24/7 stream
A bitrate calculation estimates how much outgoing capacity a stream needs; it cannot promise uninterrupted service. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish a dedicated Mbps threshold for a stable 24/7 stream, a guaranteed uptime level, or a universal failover design. Long-running operation also depends on whether the internet service and local network remain available. Plan and test for the conditions at the streaming location rather than assuming that meeting a speed figure guarantees continuous delivery.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough for 1080p live streaming?
It matches YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30, but not the 1.25× headroom planning baseline calculated from YouTube’s 20% room guidance. For 1080p60, YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate is higher.
Does this speed guidance apply to prerecorded video uploads?
No. These figures are for live encoder ingestion. YouTube’s recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos are a different use case.
