Integrating OpenAI, Claude, and DeepSeek APIs into Web Applications: A Production Guide

A practical guide to choosing and integrating an AI API in production, with provider differences in API surfaces, state, privacy, cost, and operations.

There is no evidence here for a universal “best” AI API: the available provider documentation does not establish a matched comparison of model quality, latency, reliability, or cost for your workload. Choose by testing representative requests and checking the integration surface, feature behavior, state ownership, operating limits, and data terms your application actually needs.

How to choose an AI API for your application

Start with the job your application must do, then evaluate each provider against the same requests and operating requirements. A text-only support assistant, a tool-using workflow, and a low-latency voice feature do not have the same API needs. A provider’s compatible request format can reduce migration work, but it does not prove that every parameter or feature behaves the same way.

  • Define the workload: collect representative prompts, expected input and output sizes, tool calls, modalities, and multi-turn patterns.
  • Set acceptance criteria: decide how you will judge answer quality, user-facing latency, failure rate, and operating cost for that workload.
  • Check production constraints: confirm supported API surfaces, account limits, data handling, and any required hosting or compliance arrangement.

OpenAI’s API overview recommends selecting an API surface for the application, using an official client library or direct HTTP, and reviewing error codes, rate limits, and request-ID logging before production. That is a useful starting checklist, not evidence that OpenAI outperforms the alternatives.

Compare the integration surfaces, not just the brand names

Provider What the documented integration surface establishes What to verify for your application
OpenAI The API reference presents Responses for direct model requests, tools, audio, image and text input, and stateful interactions. Realtime is intended for low-latency voice and audio sessions. Official client libraries and direct HTTP are both options. Choose the surface that matches the workload, then confirm the specific model, modality, and tool behavior you need. Do not infer comparative quality or speed from the API descriptions.
Claude / Anthropic The available official material establishes data-retention arrangements, but does not provide enough integration-guide coverage here for a like-for-like comparison of SDK setup, streaming, tools, or modalities. Check the current Claude API documentation for the exact endpoint, SDK, model, feature behavior, and limits before designing an adapter or migration.
DeepSeek The quick-start documentation describes access through OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic-compatible SDK formats. It gives https://api.deepseek.com for the OpenAI format and https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic for the Anthropic format, and shows streaming. The pricing/model documentation lists model names and feature details that can change. Validate the current model ID, endpoint, parameters, and feature support for the exact API surface you intend to call. Compatibility is not a guarantee of full feature parity.

DeepSeek’s Responses API documentation, for example, says the API is stateless and that clients send the full conversation history on each multi-turn request. It also documents unsupported or ignored parameters, including previous-response IDs and stored conversations. A request that works through a compatible SDK can therefore still require changes to state handling or feature use.

Design streaming and tool use around verified behavior

Streaming and tool calls affect both the user experience and the shape of your application code. Before choosing a provider, build a small integration test for the exact interaction you plan to ship: streamed text, a tool request, the tool result, and the follow-up response. For audio or image features, test the input and output formats your product will actually handle.

  • Streaming: DeepSeek’s quick-start describes streaming, but confirm the current stream format and termination/error behavior for your selected endpoint. The available Claude material does not establish those details.
  • Tools: OpenAI’s Responses surface documents tool use, and DeepSeek’s model page lists tool calls. Verify argument formats, tool hand-off behavior, and supported parameters against the current documentation for the specific model and endpoint.
  • Structured output and modalities: DeepSeek’s model listing describes JSON output and differentiates image support between listed models. Treat model names and capabilities as changeable and confirm them before relying on them in production.
  • Fallback paths: keep provider-specific feature use behind a boundary in your application if you may switch providers. Avoid assuming a feature exists everywhere merely because the request format looks familiar.

Decide who owns conversation state

State ownership determines what your backend must store, send, and protect. DeepSeek’s Responses documentation explicitly says: “The API is stateless: responses and conversations are not stored on the server.” For multi-turn requests, the client must send the full conversation history each time.

That design gives your application responsibility for conversation history on that API surface. It can make state management explicit, but it also means you must account for growing request payloads, history trimming, and the sensitivity of the data you retain. Do not generalize this behavior to every provider or endpoint: check state semantics for the precise surface you deploy.

Compare privacy and retention by feature and hosting route

Provider or route What the available documentation says Production implication
OpenAI API OpenAI says API data is not used to train or improve models unless the customer opts in. Default abuse-monitoring logs may contain content and are retained for up to 30 days, unless a longer period is legally required. Abuse-monitoring logs are distinct from application state. Do not summarize this as “nothing is stored.” Check the data-control terms for the endpoint and features you use, and separately govern any conversation data your own application retains.
Claude / Anthropic Anthropic describes zero-data-retention and HIPAA-ready arrangements, with eligibility varying by feature. For deployments on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Agent Platform, the cloud provider is the data processor. Confirm whether your selected feature and arrangement qualifies; for those cloud routes, review the cloud provider’s retention and compliance terms as well.
DeepSeek The Responses API documentation says responses and conversations are not stored on the server because that API is stateless. The available information does not establish DeepSeek’s broader data-retention policy. Do not treat stateless conversation handling as proof that no request content is logged or retained. Verify current data terms before sending sensitive information.

Privacy decisions are endpoint-, feature-, region-, and contract-dependent. If the application handles sensitive or regulated data, document the exact deployment route and applicable terms rather than relying on a provider-wide shorthand.

Estimate cost from your traffic, not a headline rate

Use a representative workload to compare cost: estimate input tokens and output tokens per request, multiply by expected request volume, and include any applicable cache treatment or tool-related charges. Measure prompt sizes from realistic conversations; multi-turn designs that resend history can materially change input volume.

DeepSeek’s pricing documentation separates input and output pricing, distinguishes cache hits from misses, and describes peak and off-peak rates. It also warns that prices may change. The available material does not provide a stable, matched three-provider cost comparison, so do not declare a cheapest provider from a single rate or model name. Check each provider’s current pricing terms when calculating a launch budget, and rerun the calculation when traffic or model configuration changes.

Plan for limits, errors, and observability

Capacity is part of the integration, not a detail to address after launch. DeepSeek documents account-level concurrency limits and says exceeding the applicable limit returns HTTP 429. The figures can change, so check the current account and model limits rather than hard-coding a remembered quota.

  1. Set bounded timeouts: use limits appropriate to the interaction, and surface a clear fallback when a request takes too long.
  2. Handle throttling deliberately: on a 429, avoid immediate unbounded retries. Use bounded backoff, control concurrency, and make retry behavior safe for the operation.
  3. Log useful diagnostics: record provider, endpoint, model identifier, latency, outcome, and request ID where available. OpenAI’s API guidance specifically recommends reviewing request-ID logging for production.
  4. Separate provider errors from application errors: capture enough detail to diagnose failures while applying your own rules for which error information can be exposed to users.
  5. Exercise recovery paths: test timeouts, rate-limit responses, interrupted streams, and provider errors before making the feature broadly available.

Run a workload-specific evaluation before choosing

Provider documentation can tell you how to connect and what terms or limits to inspect; it cannot establish which system gives the best result for your users. Run the same representative cases through each viable option and record outcomes against criteria your team has defined.
