But “integrated GPU” covers a wide range of performance, and whether one is enough depends on the specific processor and system, the games you play, resolution, power and cooling limits, and software compatibility.
What integrated graphics can—and cannot—tell you
An integrated GPU is graphics hardware built into a processor rather than installed as a separate graphics card. That can make a discrete card unnecessary for some gaming needs, but the category spans very different generations and capabilities. Older examples such as AMD Llano APUs and Intel HD Graphics should not be treated as equivalent to newer processor graphics.

The article published by MakeUseOf on September 17, 2026, highlights examples ranging from AMD Ryzen 5600G with Vega graphics and Apple M1 to AMD Van Gogh, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, AMD Strix Halo, and Intel Core Ultra Series 3 with Arc B390 graphics. These examples illustrate the range; they do not establish a complete market survey or a consistent performance ranking.
Decide whether an integrated GPU suits your games
Start with the games you actually intend to play, then check whether the complete system can run them at your preferred resolution, image quality, and frame rate. A general claim that a processor can game does not guarantee a satisfactory result in a particular title or configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- AMD Socket AM4: Ready to support AMD Ryzen 5000/4000/3000 Series Processors
- Enhanced Power Solution: Digital 3+3 VRM Design and premium chokes and capacitors for steady power delivery.
- Advanced Thermal Armor: Chipset heatsinks for better heat dissipation.
- Boost Your Memory: Compatible with DDR4 and supports 4 DIMMS with Extreme Memory Profile support.
- Comprehensive Connectivity: 1x Ultra Durable PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, 1x PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, 1x PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot, 4x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for hassle-free setup.
- Game and compatibility: Graphics capability is only useful when the game and its software support work on the system. The MakeUseOf article notes compatibility as a limitation in its Apple M1 discussion.
- Resolution and settings: Performance claims need the resolution and graphics settings attached. The article’s Strix Halo discussion refers to resolution and upscaling, so it should not be read as an unconditional result at every setting.
- Power and cooling: Processor graphics share the limits of their host system. The article conditions its Ryzen Z1 Extreme example on sufficient power; cooling and system power limits also matter.
- Memory and configuration: The system’s memory configuration and bandwidth are relevant to integrated graphics. The article does not specify enough detail to support a universal memory recommendation.
How to compare systems fairly
Qualitative examples are not a substitute for comparable tests. If you are choosing between systems, look for results using the same games, resolution, quality settings, and frame-rate measurement method. Check that the tested systems also have comparable power limits, cooling, and memory configuration.
Driver and game compatibility, price, and upgrade options are useful parts of the decision too. The MakeUseOf article does not provide a consistent benchmark table across its examples, so its comparisons cannot support a reliable ranked buying list. The named performance examples have not been independently validated here against primary specifications or a controlled benchmark suite.

- Game Without Compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
- 20 cores (8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores) and 28 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
- Up to 5.6 GHz with Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 gives you smooth game play, high frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
When a separate graphics card still makes sense
A discrete card may be the better fit if the integrated graphics in the specific system cannot meet your needs at your chosen settings, or if a game’s compatibility or performance is inadequate. Conversely, if your games run acceptably on the processor graphics available in the system you want, a separate card is not automatically required. Judge the complete system against your own requirements rather than relying on the label “integrated GPU.”
What the named examples establish
The article names AMD Strix Halo and Intel Arc B390 graphics in Intel Core Ultra Series 3 as high-performance examples, and identifies the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor in its Strix Halo discussion. Those mentions make the platforms worth investigating if they match your needs, but do not establish current price, availability, measured gaming performance, or which finished system is best. Check the specifications and configuration of the exact system before making a purchase decision.
