Insure&Go Bare Essentials is a limited tier of the Australian insurer’s Single-Trip Travel Insurance. Its international version lists unlimited emergency medical expenses outside Australia, but its domestic version lists no medical-and-other-expenses cover. Both have substantial gaps, including no travel-delay expenses or rental-car excess waiver in the benefit tables. Whether it fits depends on your itinerary, cancellation costs, medical needs and the excess on your quote—not on an assumed low price.
This review covers Insure&Go Australia’s Single-Trip Travel Insurance, not products sold under the same name in other countries. The current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is effective 7 October 2026. The applicable PDS is the one for your purchase date; Insure&Go’s policy-wordings page directs customers to retrieve the relevant version through their account.

What does Insure&Go Bare Essentials cover?
The PDS lists the following maximum benefits in Australian dollars. These are per-insured-person, per-trip maxima in general, and remain subject to the policy terms, exclusions, excess and any sub-limits. The certificate and PDS together form the insurance contract.
International Single Trip
| Benefit | Listed maximum |
|---|---|
| Trip cancellation | $10,000 |
| Medical and other expenses outside Australia | Unlimited |
| Dental treatment | $500 |
| Return of body or ashes to Australia | $50,000, or up to €30,000 for Schengen countries |
| Funeral or burial expenses abroad | $10,000 |
| Additional emergency expenses | $5,000 |
| Personal belongings and baggage | $5,000 |
| Personal liability | $1,500,000 |
“Unlimited” applies to the listed overseas medical-and-other-expenses benefit, not every medical-related cost: dental treatment has its own listed maximum, and policy conditions and exclusions still apply.
#1 Best Overall
Domestic Single Trip
| Benefit | Listed amount |
|---|---|
| Trip cancellation | $2,000 |
| Medical and other expenses outside Australia | Nil |
| Additional emergency expenses | Nil |
| Personal belongings and baggage | $2,000 |
| Personal liability | $1,500,000 |
The domestic table does not list emergency medical-and-other-expenses cover. Do not treat this policy as covering domestic emergency medical costs on the strength of the benefit table.
Does Bare Essentials cover cancellation?
Yes: the table lists up to $10,000 for international trip cancellation and $2,000 for domestic cancellation. Those figures are ceilings, not a promise to reimburse every cancelled booking. Check the PDS for covered cancellation reasons, exclusions and conditions, and compare the applicable limit with the non-refundable costs you would actually lose.

CHOICE’s review page says cancellation and additional expenses for transport accidents are included, while mechanical-breakdown claims for those benefits are excluded. It also lists terrorism cancellation and additional-expense claims as excluded, while medical expenses are included. Those are secondary summaries, not substitutes for the current contract wording; check the PDS for the terms that apply to your purchase.

The international Bare Essentials benefit table lists no cover for the following benefits. This describes the table, not every possible policy interaction; the wording governs any claim.

CHOICE likewise displays $0 for travel-delay expenses and rental-car excess on its review page. Its page provides a useful independent feature summary, but the PDS controls the contractual terms.
Is Bare Essentials enough for international travel?
It may suit a traveller whose priority is the listed overseas medical cover and who can absorb the costs of uncovered disruptions and property losses. It is a poor fit if you expect the policy to protect you against travel delays, delayed baggage, rental-car excess, or a broad range of other travel costs: those benefits are not listed for this tier.

- Medical needs: Consider the overseas medical limit, dental sub-limit, repatriation benefits and any pre-existing condition decision.
- Cancellation: Measure your non-refundable trip costs against the $10,000 international ceiling or $2,000 domestic ceiling, then verify which reasons qualify.
- Baggage: Compare the listed limit with the value of your belongings and check per-item limits, excluded categories and proof-of-ownership requirements. The table lists no personal-electronics sub-limit or separate valuables benefit.
- Disruption: Decide whether you can pay for delays, delayed baggage or other listed gaps yourself.
- Excess and premium: The excess applies per insured person per event when applicable. The insurer says customers may pay a higher premium to reduce it or choose a lower premium with a higher excess. Compare the actual quote and certificate.
- Activities: Read the activity rules and check that any required upgrade is agreed in writing, paid for and shown on the certificate.
Insure&Go describes Bare Essentials as its simplest cover level. It is not available with the Worldwide Including travel plan. The PDS excludes Antarctica and commercial cruise-ship travel from this single-trip cover and directs cruise travellers to a Cruise policy.

What conditions or exclusions deserve special attention?
Pre-existing medical conditions
Additional cover for a pre-existing condition must be applied for and accepted after screening, any required premium must be paid, and the cover must appear on the Insurance Certificate. The PDS also excludes claims arising from certain conditions with symptoms or pending tests, travel against medical advice, and travel for medical treatment or advice. Confirm your own position before buying.

Destinations and activities
The PDS excludes claims connected with travel in, to or through places subject to Australian Government “Do Not Travel” advice and addresses conflict and sanctions restrictions. Check the current advice and policy wording for your route. For activities, winter sports and Activities Plus have specific terms; cover for an activity requiring an upgrade does not apply unless Insure&Go has agreed in writing and the required premium has been paid.
Belongings and claim evidence
For lost, stolen or damaged belongings, the policy requires proof of ownership. Item exclusions and limits also apply, so retain suitable purchase records and check the applicable wording before relying on the baggage maximum.
How should you compare it with Silver and Gold?
There is no fixed premium established here, so Bare Essentials should not be called the cheapest option. Obtain quotes using the same traveller and trip details, then compare the certificate and policy terms across tiers:

- Match the trip: Use the correct domestic or international destination, dates and duration, and account for any cruise. Confirm the plan is available for that itinerary.
- Compare protection, not just the headline limit: Review medical, cancellation, baggage and disruption benefits, including sub-limits and exclusions.
- Check medical screening: Make sure any accepted pre-existing condition cover and its terms appear on the certificate.
- Check activities and upgrades: Confirm the activity is covered and any required upgrade is recorded.
- Compare price and excess together: Note the premium, excess per insured person per event where applicable, and the consequences of choosing a different excess.
The insurer’s current PDS is the controlling source for cover and conditions; its policy-wordings page explains how to find the version for your purchase date. CHOICE’s InsureandGo review can help identify features to investigate, but its member-only scores are not a basis for inferring a rating here.
