Microsoft positions it for fixed-purpose, specialized devices that need a stable feature set—not as a replacement for general-purpose Windows. Before installing, confirm your device and use case qualify, obtain the correct license or evaluation, and back up any data the setup process could erase.
What Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC is—and is not
The current release covered here is Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024, version 24H2, build 26100. Microsoft says it is designed for fixed-purpose devices whose features should remain stable over their expected service life. It is not a consumer debloat package or a general-purpose desktop edition. See Microsoft’s release overview and its Windows IoT Enterprise documentation.

LTSC receives monthly quality updates, but feature updates are not delivered through Windows Update for LTSC devices. This stability is useful for an appliance, kiosk, or other controlled-purpose system; it is not a shortcut to a smaller or universally compatible Windows installation. Microsoft’s guidance says each LTSC release has a 10-year support lifecycle, and moving to a later IoT Enterprise LTSC release requires a new license.

Check hardware compatibility before you install
Microsoft distinguishes preferred requirements from lower optional minimums for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC. The optional thresholds do not guarantee good performance, compatibility with a particular device, or suitability for an unmanaged consumer PC.
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
| Component | Preferred requirement | Optional minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, two cores | 1 GHz or faster, two cores |
| Memory | 4 GB | 2 GB |
| Storage | 64 GB SSD | 16 GB; SSD, HDD, SSHD, or flash storage |
| Firmware | UEFI | BIOS |
| TPM | TPM 2.0 | Optional |
| Secure Boot | Enabled | Optional |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 | DirectX 10 or none |
| Display | 9-inch or larger, 720p | Custom or optional |
These figures are Microsoft’s published requirements for this edition; check the current requirements page and the device maker’s guidance before deployment. Microsoft warns that systems using lower optional minimums may need extra monitoring and management because servicing or data growth can consume storage. For a long-lived device, plan around component availability and the manufacturer’s upgrade guidance rather than assuming that an older PC qualifies just because it meets one low threshold.
Choose a legitimate way to obtain the edition
Acquisition depends on who you are and how the device will be used. Microsoft lists a 90-day evaluation, access through an authorized Windows IoT distributor for OEMs building devices, and eligible volume-licensing routes for enterprise customers upgrading fixed-function devices. A Visual Studio subscription may also provide the product where it is included. The evaluation is not a production license, and a generic retail key should not be assumed to authorize deployment.
- Evaluating: Use Microsoft’s 90-day evaluation route described in the Windows IoT Enterprise documentation.
- Building an OEM device: Contact an authorized Windows IoT distributor for licensing and access.
- Enterprise fixed-function upgrade: Check Microsoft’s volume-licensing guidance for applicable programs and KMS or MAK activation routes.
- Visual Studio subscriber: Check the subscription’s included software and terms; availability depends on the subscription.
Eligibility and licensing terms depend on the customer and device. Microsoft explicitly says IoT Enterprise LTSC is for specialized fixed-function devices and cannot replace general-purpose desktop Windows. Its FAQ addresses where to get the product and how LTSC compares with other editions.

Microsoft’s quickstart describes a lab workflow for a Windows 11 technician PC. You will need current Windows updates, at least 15 GB of free space, the Windows ADK with Deployment Tools, Configuration Designer, and the Windows PE add-on, plus the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 ISO. For a physical target, have an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor as needed, and an erasable USB key with at least 8 GB capacity. Creating installation media can erase that USB drive; it does not provide the operating-system license.

- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
- Back up the target device. The partition procedure in Microsoft’s quickstart deletes existing partitions. Copy any files you need elsewhere and verify the backup before proceeding.
- Create bootable USB media. Follow the Microsoft Windows IoT Enterprise quickstart with the ISO and the documented deployment tools.
- Boot the target from the USB drive. Insert the media and use the device’s boot menu or firmware settings to start from it. The exact key or menu differs by manufacturer.
- Run Windows Setup. Select “Install Windows 11.” Enter a valid product key if the edition requires one, accept the license terms if you agree, and select the installation location.
- Select the destination carefully. Microsoft recommends deleting existing partitions so Setup can continue with one block of unallocated space. This removes data from those partitions. Proceed only after confirming you have selected the intended disk and saved anything you need.
- Complete setup using the deployment plan. Microsoft recommends keeping the device offline during Windows Setup because network connectivity could take it out of the deferred activation state. This is deployment guidance for the documented workflow, not a universal rule for every Windows installation.
The quickstart is also the beginning of an image-engineering workflow that can continue through Audit Mode, customization, Sysprep, image capture, and deployment. Those steps are for teams preparing a reusable device image; they are not mandatory for every single-device installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Install in a Hyper-V virtual machine instead
For a lab installation, Microsoft’s quickstart uses Hyper-V and boots the virtual machine from the ISO. Its example recommends at least 2 GB of assigned memory and two virtual processors, with a 64 GB virtual disk. These are settings for the quickstart’s lab VM example, not a replacement for evaluating the hardware requirements of a production device. Follow the quickstart’s VM instructions and licensing terms before using the image beyond evaluation.
Know the support window and update model
Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 was first available to OEM device makers on May 22, 2024, and Microsoft says its capabilities are similar to Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing gives mainstream support through October 10, 2029, and extended support through October 11, 2034; the listing displays dates in Pacific Time. Check the official lifecycle entry for the current status. The support dates do not change the licensing requirement for moving to a later LTSC release.
