Install traceless-style with your project’s existing package manager, connect the integration for your framework or bundler, then confirm that its CSS file is generated and loaded. The package has no required runtime dependencies; its optional @swc/core dependency enables the SWC-backed extractor for large codebases.
Install the package
Use the package manager that matches the project’s lockfile. The package ships pre-built and has no postinstall step, according to the traceless-style Installation documentation.

npm install traceless-stylepnpm add traceless-styleyarn add traceless-style
Choose one command, not all three. The optional @swc/core dependency is not required for a standard installation.

Choose an integration
Use the integration that matches the framework or build tool already in the project. The installation guide maps the main options as follows:
#1 Best Overall
| Project setup | Integration |
|---|---|
| Next.js | traceless-style/nextjs |
| Webpack | traceless-style/webpack |
| Vite | traceless-style/vite |
| Rollup | traceless-style/rollup |
| esbuild | traceless-style/esbuild |
| Plain Node build script | CLI |
The CLI also documents framework detection for Next.js, Vite, Remix, Astro, SvelteKit, Qwik, Solid, and plain HTML. Follow the relevant integration page for its configuration snippet rather than combining plugins from different setups. See the installation guide and CLI reference.
Scaffold a supported project with the CLI
For projects the CLI can detect, start with npx traceless-style init. It detects the framework, wires an entry point or configuration, adds or updates development and build scripts, creates a stylesheet stub, and runs an initial extraction.
- Run the initializer:
npx traceless-style init. - If the source files are not ready, skip extraction:
npx traceless-style init --no-extract. - Review the changed configuration and scripts: confirm they match the project’s existing build workflow before continuing.
The CLI reference says rerunning init is idempotent. Consult the CLI documentation for the command’s behavior.

Verify that CSS is generated
Add a small component that imports tl from traceless-style and calls tl.create, then run the project’s development server. The installation guide describes the first request as triggering a full extraction, with later saves triggering incremental rebuilds.
- Check for
public/traceless-style.cssand confirm it contains the expected rules. - If the file is elsewhere, check the configured
outCSSpath. - Confirm that the stylesheet is loaded: Next.js injects it automatically; other setups should link to
/traceless-style.css, or to the path configured asoutCSS.
These verification steps follow the official installation procedure.
Configure root-level dark mode or RTL support
If the project uses dark mode or right-to-left support, place <TracelessRoot /> in the root layout’s <head>. The installation guide identifies this placement as the way to avoid an initial light-theme flash in that setup.
Understand lint and configuration defaults
Lint is enabled by default. During extraction, inline styles and bare class strings are rejected. Strict lint or contrast errors can return exit code 1 and stop framework hand-off, so inspect the diagnostic before changing settings.
The optional CommonJS configuration file is traceless-style.config.js. Its documented options include lint, automatic dark mode, RTL rewriting, and contrast checks; the configuration reference also describes rules for CSS modules and Tailwind. Keep defaults unless the project has a specific reason to adjust them. See the configuration reference and CLI reference.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
“Cannot find module ‘traceless-style/nextjs’”
Check that the project has Next.js installed and that the import path is exactly traceless-style/nextjs. This error can result from a missing next dependency or an incorrect path, according to the installation troubleshooting guide.

tl.merge() does not deduplicate in Webpack
Check for the required __TRACELESS_STYLE_META__ injection. The guide says to use withTracelessStyle() as documented; adding only TracelessStyleWebpackPlugin is not sufficient.
Extraction is slow in a large codebase
Try the SWC-backed parser by setting TRACELESS_STYLE_PARSER=swc or passing --parser=swc to the relevant command. SWC uses the optional @swc/core dependency, not a requirement for every installation. The CLI reference covers parser selection.
@swc/core fails to install on Alpine or musl
The installation guide suggests pinning a known-good @swc/core version or staying with the legacy parser. Since SWC is optional, you can leave it out if you do not need that extractor.
Best Value
The page flashes a light theme
For the dark-mode setup, check that <TracelessRoot /> is included in the root layout’s <head>.
The build stops during extraction
Read the lint or contrast diagnostic first. The CLI documentation says strict lint and contrast errors can produce exit code 1 and stop framework hand-off; adjust configuration only after identifying the specific issue. See the configuration reference.
