To install a working Jenkins controller on Rocky Linux 9, add the Jenkins LTS RPM repository, install Java 21 and fontconfig, install the Jenkins package, then enable and start its systemd service. After confirming the service is running, allow its configured port through the applicable firewall and unlock Jenkins in a browser. The steps below follow Jenkins’ official RPM instructions for Rocky Linux and other Red Hat derivatives.
Choose LTS or weekly releases
The official Jenkins guide offers two RPM repository channels. LTS is the conservative choice for a general-purpose controller: Jenkins selects an LTS release every 12 weeks. The weekly channel receives releases on a faster, weekly cadence. The installation commands below use LTS; choose weekly only if you specifically want that release stream.

Check Java and host capacity
The Jenkins guide’s current RPM instructions use java-21-openjdk and require Java 21 or later. Check the Jenkins Java Support Policy if you are installing a different Jenkins release: supported Java versions depend on the Jenkins release line, and an unsupported runtime can prevent the controller from starting. The Java running Jenkins is also distinct from the Java versions your builds may need.

Jenkins lists 256 MB of RAM and 1 GB of drive space as minimum hardware requirements. For a small team, its guide recommends 4 GB or more of RAM and 50 GB or more of drive space. These are general figures, not a Rocky Linux 9 performance guarantee; actual capacity depends on controller workload and where build agents execute.
Install Jenkins from the LTS repository
Run the following commands on Rocky Linux 9. The repository and package sequence follows Jenkins’ Red Hat derivative instructions, which explicitly include Rocky Linux.

Add the LTS repository file:
sudo wget -O /etc/yum.repos.d/jenkins.repo https://pkg.jenkins.io/rpm-stable/jenkins.repo -
Upgrade packages and install the prerequisites:
sudo yum upgrade sudo yum install fontconfig java-21-openjdk -
Install Jenkins and reload systemd’s unit definitions:

Enable Jenkins at boot, start it now, and check its status:
sudo systemctl enable jenkins sudo systemctl start jenkins sudo systemctl status jenkins
To use weekly releases instead, replace the LTS repository URL with https://pkg.jenkins.io/rpm/jenkins.repo when creating the repository file. The remaining package and service commands are the same in the Jenkins guide.

Allow access through the firewall
Jenkins commonly listens on port 8080, but use the port actually configured on your host. If firewalld is active, open that port in the appropriate zone. For example, to allow TCP port 8080 in the default zone:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=8080/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --reloadOpening a host’s local firewall does not necessarily open an upstream network firewall, and exposing Jenkins to a wider network may not be appropriate for every deployment. Apply the access rules your environment requires rather than assuming the service should be publicly reachable.
Unlock Jenkins and complete setup

Open
http://localhost:8080on the server, or visit the controller’s configured hostname and port from a machine that can reach it. -
On the unlock screen, retrieve the generated initial administrator password on the server:
sudo cat /var/lib/jenkins/secrets/initialAdminPasswordThe Jenkins guide also identifies the service console log as a place to find the password.

Enter the password in the browser, select plugins in the setup wizard, and create the first administrator account.

If Jenkins does not start or load
Start troubleshooting with the systemd service status:
sudo systemctl status jenkins-
If the service is not active, inspect its service logs and verify that the Java runtime available to the service is supported by your Jenkins release.

If the service is active but the browser cannot connect, check that you are using the configured port and that local and upstream firewall rules allow the intended traffic.

If the unlock page appears but the password file is unavailable or unreadable, check the service console log for the generated password.

The Jenkins guide provides the installation and systemd steps; its Linux Support Policy describes support levels for Linux versions. The installation guide includes Rocky Linux in its Red Hat derivative instructions, but that alone does not establish a separate Rocky Linux 9 certification or support tier.
