Install Cursor on Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04: APT and AppImage

Cursor recommends installing on Debian and Ubuntu through its APT repository. Here are the commands, the AppImage alternative, and the limits of the Ubuntu-specific support information.

For Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04, Cursor’s documented recommended Linux installation method is its Debian/Ubuntu APT repository. Add Cursor’s signing key and repository, refresh APT, then install the cursor package. Cursor also offers an AppImage alternative. Its official installation pages describe the Debian/Ubuntu method generally; they do not explicitly certify either Ubuntu release.

Which installation method should you choose?

Cursor recommends its APT package for Debian and Ubuntu. Its documentation says, “The apt and yum packages are preferred over AppImage. They provide desktop icons, automatic updates, and CLI tools.” Choose the APT route if you want those documented package benefits. Choose AppImage if you prefer the portable format and are comfortable launching the downloaded file yourself.

The instructions below are Cursor’s published Linux procedures, not a claim of independent testing on Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04. The official pages do not name or specifically certify those releases.

Install Cursor from the APT repository

Open a terminal and run Cursor’s commands in order. The repository entry limits packages to amd64 and arm64 architectures and uses the signing key stored in /etc/apt/keyrings/cursor.gpg.

  1. Add Cursor’s signing key:

    curl -fsSL https://downloads.cursor.com/keys/anysphere.asc | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/cursor.gpg > /dev/null
  2. Add the stable APT repository:

    echo "deb [arch=amd64,arm64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/cursor.gpg] https://downloads.cursor.com/aptrepo stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cursor.list > /dev/null
  3. Refresh the package index:

    sudo apt update
  4. Install Cursor:

    sudo apt install cursor

These commands and repository details are from Cursor’s Quickstart. If APT reports a repository or package error, check that the commands completed without errors and that your system uses one of the listed architectures; the documentation does not provide a separate Ubuntu-version-specific troubleshooting procedure.

Install Cursor with the AppImage

Use this route if you want the portable AppImage rather than the APT package. Download the .AppImage file from Cursor’s downloads page, then open a terminal in the download’s folder and run:

./Cursor-*.AppImage

The first command makes a matching downloaded file executable; the second launches it. If the commands do not find a file, move to the folder containing the download or replace the wildcard with the exact filename. Cursor documents this format as an alternative, while preferring its package-based installation.

What the Ubuntu version information does—and does not—confirm

Cursor’s Quickstart labels its instructions “Debian/Ubuntu (recommended)” and gives the APT repository steps above. Its general installation help says Linux users can install through apt or dnf when available, or extract an AppImage or archive and run it. Neither page explicitly names Ubuntu 24.04 or certifies Ubuntu 26.04, so these are the documented general Linux instructions rather than a version-specific compatibility guarantee.

A community discussion about Ubuntu 26.04 describes an individual user’s update trouble; that anecdote does not establish broad compatibility or guarantee how updates behave for other installations. Use Cursor’s current official Quickstart for the installation commands.
