“Static” in Pro Tools can mean hiss, hum, crackling, digital clicks or pops, or distortion. Those sounds do not point to one universal fix. First find out whether the noise is being recorded or is audible only while monitoring, then trace the signal path to locate where it enters.
Start by describing the noise and where you hear it
Before changing settings, note what the sound does and where it appears. Listen for whether it is continuous, periodic, crackling, clicking or popping, or distorted. Then determine whether it is present in the recorded audio file or only in the live monitoring path.

- Noise in the recorded file: investigate the source and input path, as well as any processing applied during recording.
- Noise only while monitoring: compare the interface’s input monitoring, Pro Tools monitoring, playback routing, and output path. The distinction narrows the search, but does not by itself identify the cause.
Change one variable at a time and listen or record again. Keep track of whether the symptom changes at the source, in the recorded file, or only in monitoring.
Trace the signal chain from input to output
Work in the direction the audio travels rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. For a USB microphone-input path, Avid describes the chain as microphone → XLR cable → interface preamp → USB connection → computer device driver → Pro Tools. The exact path varies with the equipment, but the same logic helps isolate the point where the noise appears. See Avid’s USB audio-interface input troubleshooting guidance.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Source and input: Check the microphone or other source and the selected input. If practical, compare with another known-good source or input without changing the rest of the setup.
- Cable and connection: Check that the cable is firmly connected and that its connector and type match the source and interface. If the cable is a plausible suspect, a matching replacement audio cable for an audio interface can serve as a comparison; replacing a cable is not a general-purpose fix.
- Interface and computer connection: Confirm the interface is powered and connected. Avid’s interface-recognition guidance also points to installing the current device driver; follow the interface maker’s instructions for your specific model and operating system. See Avid’s interface-recognition troubleshooting article.
- Pro Tools routing: Check that the intended input and output are selected and that the track and monitoring path use them. If the noise occurs only on playback or in a particular monitoring route, compare that path separately from the recording input.
- Output and monitoring: Check the connection and device through which you hear the signal. If the recorded file is clean but the monitored signal is noisy, focus comparisons on the monitoring and output path.
When to check the Playback Engine buffer
Buffer settings are worth investigating when static-like noise occurs alongside an AAE error, especially -6099 or -6101. They are not proof that buffer size causes every noise problem.
- For AAE -6099, Avid warns that “Not all hardware configurations support 32 or 64 sample buffer sizes.” Check the supported settings for your actual audio device rather than assuming the smallest buffer is valid. See Avid’s AAE -6099 guidance.
- For AAE -6101, Avid lists increasing the Hardware Buffer Size in Setup > Playback Engine as a troubleshooting step. See Avid’s AAE -6101 guidance.
If you test a different buffer, make one change and compare the result. A larger buffer can make monitoring less responsive, so weigh any improvement against how you need the session to feel while recording. Choose only settings supported by your interface.

If the signal path uses digital I/O, check clocking
For a path that includes digital input or output, verify that the devices use the intended clock source and that their sample-rate-conversion configuration is appropriate. Avid’s archived Pro Tools 12.1 release notes describe a specific HD OMNI case: a digital source with a mismatched clock and sample-rate conversion disabled can produce noise. That is a model- and documentation-specific example, not a diagnosis for every Pro Tools system. Consult current documentation for the hardware in your setup.

| What you observe | Where to focus next |
|---|---|
| Noise is present in the recorded file | Compare the source, input, cable, interface, driver, and recording path. |
| Noise is audible only while monitoring | Compare the monitoring route, Pro Tools playback path, interface output, and listening connection. |
| Noise appears with AAE -6099 or -6101 | Check Hardware Buffer Size in Setup > Playback Engine and confirm the setting is supported by the device; for -6101, test Avid’s recommended increase. |
| Noise occurs on a path using digital I/O | Check the clock source and sample-rate-conversion configuration against the actual device documentation. |
| A cable is a plausible fault | Compare using a cable with matching connectors and type, keeping other parts of the path unchanged. |
These observations help prioritize comparisons; none alone proves a cause. If the noise persists, preserve the session and note the exact symptom, whether it is recorded or monitoring-only, any AAE error, the selected device and buffer setting, and the signal path. That information makes the next troubleshooting step more specific.
