Does AVG AntiVirus FREE work on Windows 11?
AVG’s current requirements page lists AVG AntiVirus FREE 26.x for Windows 11. For a standard Windows 11 PC, AVG specifies an Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 processor or newer that supports SSE3, at least 1 GB of RAM, at least 2 GB of free disk space, and an internet connection for downloading, activation, and program and antivirus database updates. Check AVG’s current system requirements for the supported Windows editions and exceptions.

The requirements page also lists Windows 11 ARM64, with exceptions for Mixed Reality and IoT editions. On Windows 11 ARM, AVG says Boot Time Scan and Rescue Disk are unavailable. Because AVG’s installation-preparation guidance also discusses x86 processor support, confirm your specific device against the current requirements rather than assuming every ARM-based PC supports every feature.
Check these items before installation
- Windows edition and S mode: Check whether Windows is in S mode. The standard AVG installer is not suitable while S mode is enabled.
- Processor architecture: Confirm that your processor and Windows edition meet AVG’s current requirements, especially on ARM devices.
- Memory and storage: Make sure at least 1 GB of RAM and 2 GB of free disk space are available.
- Internet access: AVG requires a connection to download and activate the application and maintain updates.
- Other security software: AVG advises removing other third-party security software before installing. After setup, check Windows Security to see which antivirus is active.
- Windows updates: AVG recommends bringing Windows up to date before installing.
How to install AVG on a Windows 11 PC
Use AVG’s Windows installer from its official download page and follow AVG’s installation instructions.

- Open the downloaded file. If prompted, choose to run it as administrator.
- Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Follow the setup screens to complete installation.
- Restart the PC if needed. AVG notes that some components may not function fully until after a restart.
- Open Windows Security and check which antivirus provider is active.
What does the free version include?
AVG describes AntiVirus FREE as providing real-time detection of viruses, malware, spyware, and other threats. Its FAQ says Smart Scan checks for viruses, vulnerable software, problematic browser add-ons, poor search engines, network issues, and performance issues. These are AVG’s descriptions of its features, not independent test results or a guarantee that every threat will be detected.
AVG Internet Security includes the free features plus premium features. AVG Secure VPN and TuneUp may appear in the AVG app, but they require separate paid subscriptions. AVG also says its Internet Security trial requires payment details and becomes a paid subscription unless cancelled before the trial ends. Check the terms shown during signup before starting a trial.

Do you need AVG if Windows 11 already has Defender?
Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turned on. That means installing AVG does not normally leave both antivirus products actively providing real-time protection. To confirm the status on your PC, open Windows Security and review the antivirus provider shown under Virus & threat protection.

Whether AVG is the right choice depends on whether you prefer its interface or features; the cited information does not establish that AVG is more effective than Defender. Compare the features you actually want and avoid assuming that having two antivirus products installed means you get two active layers of protection.

What if Windows 11 is in S mode?
Microsoft says S mode restricts installation to apps from the Microsoft Store and identifies the built-in Windows security solution as the compatible antivirus. The regular AVG Windows installer therefore is not suitable while the PC remains in S mode. Check Microsoft’s S mode FAQ for the applicable installation restrictions and options before changing your Windows configuration.
