Pixel 10’s clearest upgrade over Pixel 8 is its 5× optical telephoto camera, joined by a newer chip, more RAM, a slightly larger and brighter-rated display, and Qi2 Pixelsnap wireless charging. Whether those changes justify upgrading depends most on how much you value optical zoom and on the same-day price of a comparable phone. Google’s US Store showed Pixel 10 at $649 on October 7, 2026, but the available official evidence does not establish a current Pixel 8 price or an exact price difference.

What changes matter most in everyday use?
Pixel 10 adds a real 5× optical telephoto camera
Pixel 8 has two rear cameras; Pixel 10 adds a dedicated 5× optical telephoto camera with optical image stabilization. That is the most concrete hardware reason to choose Pixel 10 if you often photograph distant subjects. Google also lists a higher maximum zoom figure for Pixel 10, but zoom-range specifications alone do not establish how good photos look at every magnification. Megapixel counts are not a reliable standalone measure of image quality.

The screen grows slightly and carries higher brightness ratings
Pixel 10’s display is 0.1 inch larger diagonally. Google also lists higher HDR and peak brightness figures, which may matter if you use your phone outdoors. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of a particular viewing experience; the resolution figures are close, and both screens support a 60–120 Hz refresh rate.
Newer chip and more RAM, without a measured speed claim
Google lists Tensor G5 and 12 GB of RAM for Pixel 10, versus Tensor G3 and 8 GB in the compared Pixel 8 configuration. Those are meaningful specification changes, but no benchmark results are established here, so they do not support a precise claim about how much faster Pixel 10 is. Consider your own workload and independent testing if measured performance is the deciding factor.

More battery capacity does not prove longer real-world endurance
Pixel 10 has a larger typical battery capacity on paper, while Google’s headline claim for ordinary use is 24+ hours for both phones. Google advertises up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver for Pixel 10 and up to 72 hours for Pixel 8; those figures are manufacturer claims under Google’s test framing, and actual battery life varies with use. They are not a direct independent comparison of everyday endurance.
Pixelsnap brings Qi2 magnetic charging to Pixel 10
Pixel 10 supports Qi2 Pixelsnap wireless charging up to 15 W. Pixel 8 supports Qi-certified fast wireless charging, but the supplied specifications do not establish the same Pixelsnap feature for it. For Pixel 10’s wired charging claim of up to 55% in about 30 minutes, Google specifies a 30 W USB-C PPS charger or higher, sold separately. Check accessory compatibility by phone model before buying a case or charger.

What is the Pixel 10 price difference?
On October 7, 2026, Google’s US Store displayed Pixel 10 starting at $649, reduced from a displayed $799, with the unlocked promotion scheduled to end October 11, 2026. That is a dated US offer, not a permanent price or a guarantee that every storage configuration costs the same. See the Google Store Pixel 10 page for the offer details.
A current official Pixel 8 selling price was not established, so an exact current price gap cannot be stated responsibly. To compare what upgrading would cost, check both phones in the same country and on the same day, matching storage, condition (new, refurbished or used), carrier-lock status and warranty. A sale price for Pixel 10 should not be compared with Pixel 8’s launch price as if both were current offers.

How long will each phone get updates?
Google’s policy provides seven years of OS and security updates, and Pixel Drops may also be included. The period begins when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US, so the two phones’ support clocks do not start together: Pixel 8’s earlier start means its seven-year period ends earlier. Google’s Pixel update policy explains the coverage rule.
Should you upgrade from Pixel 8 to Pixel 10?
- Pixel 10 is the stronger fit if you want a dedicated 5× optical lens, Qi2 Pixelsnap charging, the newer listed chip and additional RAM, or a slightly larger screen with higher manufacturer brightness ratings.
- Keeping Pixel 8 may make sense if its camera range and performance meet your needs, you do not value the new charging system, and replacing a working phone would cost more than the changes are worth to you.
- Check remaining support time against your planned ownership period. Both models have a seven-year policy, but their support periods began on different US availability dates.
- Compare live like-for-like prices before deciding. The dated Pixel 10 promotion does not establish today’s Pixel 8 price or a reliable net upgrade cost.
Neither the published capacity figures nor Google’s battery claims establish how the phones compare in independent real-world endurance tests. Likewise, the listed chip and memory changes do not quantify a speed difference. If battery life or performance is your main reason to upgrade, seek testing that matches the way you use a phone.

Google rates both phones IP68 for dust and water resistance; that does not make either phone waterproof, and resistance can diminish through wear or damage.
