Both can help identify people or contributors, but neither guarantees extra reach or overrides who can see a post. Here’s how to use each, give credit, and manage who can tag or mention you.
What’s the difference between an Instagram tag and an @mention?
A tag connects an account to visual content, such as a photo or Reel. A viewer can tap the tag to open the associated profile. An @mention names an account in text or on another Instagram surface; where it is interactive, viewers can tap through to that profile.

| Feature | Where it appears | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account tag | Attached to visual content, including photos and Reels | Identifies an account in connection with the content | Does not guarantee the post will appear on the tagged account’s profile grid or reach a larger audience |
| @mention | Text and surfaces such as Stories, Notes, comments, Live videos, and captions | Names an account and can provide a profile link | Does not change the audience or privacy settings of the content |

How to tag an account in a Reel
The general flow is to prepare the Reel, reach its sharing screen, open the people-tagging option, find and select the intended account, and then share. The precise control name and screen sequence can change, so treat this as a general guide rather than a guaranteed current tap-by-tap path.
#1 Best Overall
- Prepare your Reel and continue to its sharing screen.
- Choose the control for tagging people or friends.
- Search for the intended account and select it. Check the account name before proceeding.
- Review the Reel and share it when ready.
Meta described this general flow in its August 2020 Reels announcement, which said the sharing screen offered an option to tag friends. That announcement documents the feature at the time; it does not establish today’s exact labels or layout. Meta, “Introducing Instagram Reels”.
The current workflow for ordinary feed posts and Stories, tagging limits, and differences among iOS, Android, and web are not established by the available sources. If you need exact instructions for one of those cases, check the current Instagram app or Help Center rather than relying on an old screen description. Instagram’s Help Center search listing points to articles about tagging and mentions, tagged photos and videos, and product tags in Reels, but does not by itself confirm current step-by-step instructions.
Use tags to identify contributors and give credit
A tag can help viewers identify who appears in or contributed to a post. For a collaborative Reel or feed post, an account tag can connect the work with the relevant creator’s profile. Make sure the account is the right one and that tagging is appropriate; a tag is not a substitute for obtaining permission to use someone’s work.

For example, a creator could identify as a dancer, photographer, or makeup artist, giving viewers context about their contribution. The tagged creator controls their profile category; the person publishing the post can choose whether to display it with the tag. This was announced in 2022, and current availability or interface steps are not established here. Meta’s April 2022 announcement about enhanced tags.

Who can see a tagged post?
A tag does not make content public or expose a private account’s posts to people who otherwise cannot see them. Visibility depends on the account and post audience settings. Meta’s Reels announcement says public-account Reels can be distributed more widely through Explore, while private-account Reels are limited to followers in Feed. Those are audience rules, not an effect of tagging. Meta’s Reels announcement.
Do not treat a tag as a way to bypass privacy settings or as a promise of discovery. It identifies an account; it does not guarantee distribution, engagement, or placement on another person’s profile.

How to restrict tags and mentions
Instagram provides controls over who can tag or mention an account, as well as an option to review tags manually, according to Singapore IMDA’s 2024 report. To find the relevant settings, inspect Instagram’s Tags and mentions controls. Menu wording and location can change, so the label may not appear identically for every user. - Choose who is allowed to tag or mention you if you want to limit incoming links to your account.
- Enable manual tag review if you want to decide which eligible tags appear on your profile.
- Review tags and mentions periodically, especially if you receive unwanted or misleading references.
Tag review and mention permissions address different things: reviewing a tag gives you control over its association with your profile, while mention controls govern who can refer to you in text and other supported surfaces.

Location tags are different
A location tag identifies a place, not an account. Meta’s August 2025 feature announcement says location-tagged content can appear on the Instagram Map. That is separate from tagging a person or business account; use a location tag only when you intend to associate the content with that place. Meta, “New Instagram Features to Help You Connect”.
