To limit how Instagram personalizes ads and recommendations, review your ad preferences, connected-account settings and off-Meta activity controls, and use the menu on individual ads to inspect or hide advertisers. These settings can adjust parts of the experience; Meta’s published materials do not describe one switch that stops all data use. AI interactions used to personalize recommendations are also a separate issue from using data to train AI models.
What does Instagram use AI interactions for?
Meta announced on October 1, 2025, that interactions with its generative AI features would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations on its platforms. The company said notices would begin on October 7, 2025, and the change would start on December 16, 2025, in most regions. That announced start date has passed; it does not mean the same controls or practices apply identically to every account or location.

This concerns AI interactions as a signal for choosing recommendations and ads. It is not the same as training AI models on data. An ad preference may affect what ads you see, but Meta’s announcement does not identify it as an opt-out from using AI interactions as a recommendation signal.

Meta also said it does not use conversations about certain sensitive topics—including religion, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership—to show ads. That statement is specifically about showing ads; it should not be read as a promise that those conversations are excluded from every other kind of data use. Meta said information may be used across its products for accounts connected in the same Accounts Center.

Which settings can you review?
Start in Instagram’s current settings and Accounts Center. Labels and menu paths can change, and the controls available may differ by account or region. Meta’s Privacy Tools and Information Security page describes these tools and their general purposes, but does not provide a stable tap-by-tap path for every Instagram account.

- Open Instagram’s settings and find Accounts Center. Review connected accounts and experiences, and check the ad-preference controls available to your account.
- Look for Off-Facebook Activity or the equivalent activity control in the current privacy settings, then review or disconnect activity from other apps and websites if you choose.
- Use Privacy Checkup to review information visibility, use and account security. Treat this as a broader privacy review, not a setting that disables AI recommendations.
How do you inspect or hide an ad?
On an ad you are currently seeing, open its three-dot menu and choose “Why am I seeing this ad?” to see the explanation and reach relevant ad preferences. Meta says the interface also lets you hide all ads from a given advertiser. Hiding an advertiser affects that advertiser’s ads; it does not show that Meta has stopped using other information to personalize ads.

Does an ad setting stop AI training?
No such effect is established in the cited materials. The Italian Data Protection Authority’s notice, dated April 29, 2025 and updated May 15, 2025, addressed Meta’s announced use of public posts and data generated by AI services to train Meta AI and language models. It described an objection form for Instagram users and said an objection submitted by the end of May would exclude personal information from that announced training use. The notice said a later objection would apply to future content, not information already online.

What these controls can—and cannot—do
Meta’s published materials describe ways to inspect ad explanations, change ad preferences, hide an advertiser, manage connected accounts, and control some off-platform activity. They do not establish a single setting that disables AI-chat interactions as an ad signal while retaining other personalization, or that stops all data processing. Choose controls based on the specific data use you want to address, and check the live settings and local notices for your account.
