“Instagram music not working” can mean four different failures: the music tool is missing, one track shows audio unavailable, a country or account restriction blocks the licensed library, or the app has a local fault. Each has a different fix, and only the last one responds to the basic app checks. Work through the steps below in order, because each one rules out a cause before you move to the next.
Start by naming the failure
Most frustration comes from treating every symptom as the same problem. Match what you see to the closest row before you change any settings.

Know the two music sources before you troubleshoot
Instagram offers music from two places, and they carry different terms. Knowing which one you are trying to use tells you which checks apply.

Menu labels and screen layouts change between app versions, so treat the navigation descriptions below as a guide and follow what is on your screen.

Step 1: Identify exactly what failed
Decide whether the music control is missing everywhere or whether a single track is unavailable. Then note three details: the exact message text, whether the problem appears in Stories, Reels, or both, and whether it happens on one account or on every account you use. A missing control and one unavailable song are different symptoms, and they should not be treated as one cause.
Step 2: Try another track
Open a new Reel or Story draft and add a different song from the library. If other tracks play normally, the problem is specific to the track or its availability, and your app is probably not broken. Meta’s Help Center describes licensing in general terms and does not explain why an individual song is unavailable, so a single-track failure is a catalog question you cannot resolve from your phone.

Step 3: Check account and post eligibility
Meta states that certain business accounts and certain post types do not have access to the licensed library. If you run a business account, check whether the post you are making falls into a restricted type. Changing account type is a significant decision: it can affect analytics, ads, and team workflows. Meta’s page does not promise that switching will restore access to a given catalog, so weigh that trade-off before changing anything.

Step 4: Consider regional availability
If the app tells you music is unavailable in your region, treat that as a possible rights restriction. Meta says licensed music may not be available in some countries or regions. A regional message does not mean your phone’s region setting is wrong. Changing your device’s region or location to reach music that is restricted where you are would be a way of getting around a rights limit, and this guide does not recommend it.

Step 5: Update and restart the app
Check the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) for a pending Instagram update and install it if one is available. Then fully close Instagram, reopen it, and test the same track again. If the problem was a local glitch, the control or track may reappear. Neither the update nor the restart is documented as a guaranteed fix for licensed music, so if the problem remains, move on rather than repeating these steps.
Step 6: Use Sound Collection for commercial content
If you need music for a promotion, product post, or ad, and the licensed library is unavailable to your account, look for Sound Collection in the music picker when it is offered. Meta describes it as royalty free and safe for Reels and Stories, including commercial use such as ads. Before posting, confirm that the track is available for your intended use. Do not import copyrighted music from another app or website as a substitute; that is a rights problem, not a troubleshooting step.

Step 7: Escalate persistent, broad failures
If music still fails across several tracks and formats after Steps 1 to 5, use the Help area in the app and report the problem there. The exact menu path for this on iOS and Android was not confirmed for this guide, so look for Help in the current app menus rather than following a fixed click path. If the app shows a specific error message, include its exact wording in your report; it is the most useful detail for diagnosing the problem.
