Instagram opens web pages inside an app-hosted browser context, whose host app, platform, configuration, and web engine can affect how the page behaves. Reproduce the exact link and steps on the affected device, compare them with the same flow in its standalone browser, and fix the cause you can observe.
Why a site can behave differently inside Instagram
An in-app browser is a web view presented inside an app rather than a separate session in a user’s standalone browser. Apple describes WKWebView as a native view for displaying interactive web content in an app; the app can control navigation and configure that view. This explains why an app-hosted page may not behave exactly like the same URL opened in Safari. It does not establish Instagram’s precise browser configuration.

There is no basis here to say Instagram universally uses Safari, Chrome, or one fixed web engine on every device. Meta’s September 30, 2022 post about an alternative Chromium-based WebView described a rollout for the Facebook Android in-app browser, which had historically relied on Android System WebView. Meta said of that Facebook Android change, “This change will improve security and performance and reduce app crashes when people view websites in our Facebook app.” That historical Facebook-specific description is not evidence of Instagram’s current implementation.

Start with the exact failure, not a guessed cause
“Instagram in-app browser not working” can describe a blank page, a stalled redirect, a broken layout, a form that will not submit, or a sign-in that never completes. “Instagram link opens a blank page” is useful as a symptom, but it does not identify whether the issue is in the page, its scripts, a network request, navigation, or browser state. Likewise, “website works in Safari but not Instagram” narrows the context; it does not by itself prove a cookie problem.

Record the device model and operating-system version, the Instagram app version if available, the exact URL, where the link appeared (such as a Story, bio, message, or ad), and the action that fails. Capture any visible error text and the step immediately before the failure. Keep the full URL, including campaign parameters and redirects: testing the homepage will not reproduce a failure tied to a tagged link or a particular landing page.
Reproduce and compare the same user journey
- Open the shared link from Instagram on a device and platform comparable to the report. Follow the same path the visitor used instead of pasting a shortened or cleaned-up version of the URL.
- Open that identical URL in the standalone browser on the same device. Keep the query string, account state, and sequence of actions the same.
- Compare the point of failure. Note whether the page loads and renders, whether scripts or requests fail, whether redirects complete, and whether forms, sign-in, or embedded content work.
- Inspect the failing flow where possible. Look for JavaScript errors, failed network requests, unexpected navigation, redirect loops, and missing form or authentication state.
- Change one relevant condition at a time and retest. Once inspection points to a script, request, redirect, layout, interaction, or state dependency, correct that observed issue and repeat the original Instagram path.
A difference between the two browser contexts narrows the investigation to their different environment or the way the site responds to it; it does not rank one browser as universally better or name the failing component on its own.

Inspect app web content on Apple devices
Apple documents Safari Web Inspector for examining web content in apps when the app supports inspection. On iPhone or iPad, enable it in Settings > Safari > Advanced > Web Inspector, then connect the device to a Mac and use Safari’s developer tools to inspect the available app content. Apple’s inspection documentation and WebKit’s overview of inspecting web content in apps describe this capability and its requirements.

Check cookies only when the flow depends on them
Give cookie and storage behavior focused attention if the failing step involves sign-in, payment handoff, an embedded widget, or a flow that crosses site boundaries. WebKit documents full third-party cookie blocking in Safari and related WebKit contexts, along with mechanisms such as the Storage Access API for particular embedded-content cases. That makes third-party state a reasonable item to investigate; it does not establish that Instagram blocked a cookie in a specific report.
Trace which site sets and reads the relevant state, and whether the flow assumes that state will be available in an embedded or cross-site context. Where the evidence points to that dependency, consider a design based on first-party state or an appropriate supported mechanism. Test the actual end-to-end flow rather than applying a broad cookie workaround.

Fix the cause you observed and give visitors a fallback
Use the inspection results to address the failing part of the experience: for example, a script error, blocked or unsuccessful request, redirect problem, responsive-layout issue, form interaction, or state dependency. Then repeat the original Instagram link and steps on the affected platform, and compare the same journey in the standalone browser.

If the page remains unusable, tell visitors they can open the in-app browser’s menu and choose an option to open the page in an external browser, if that option is available in their version of the app. If someone asks, “how do I open an Instagram link in my browser?”, this is a practical fallback—not a site-owner-controlled fix. The reviewed official documentation does not establish a supported Instagram API that lets a website force that handoff. Avoid promising that a private URL scheme, user-agent detection, or automatic redirect will always open another browser.

Do not assume that Facebook’s in-app-browser controls also exist in Instagram. Meta’s help page on settings for viewing websites in the Facebook app is Facebook-specific, including its instructions about clearing in-app browsing data; it does not document an equivalent Instagram menu or make clearing data a website fix.
