To attract more relevant Instagram followers, make your account’s purpose clear, publish original posts for a defined audience, choose formats that fit your ideas, engage genuinely, and use your account’s available insights to improve. Instagram offers creator guidance in its Professional Dashboard, but neither Meta’s guidance nor its public ranking explanation promises a follower count or a fixed growth timeline.
Make it obvious why someone should follow
A new visitor should be able to tell who your account is for and what they can expect from it. Use your bio and recent posts to communicate a focused promise: for example, practical weeknight recipes, local cycling routes, or design advice for independent shops. This is a useful editorial principle, not a verified Instagram ranking signal or a guarantee of growth.

Before publishing, ask whether a post fits that promise and gives the intended audience a reason to watch, read, save, share, or return. A recognizable point of view and a few recurring themes can make the account easier to understand without requiring every post to look identical.
Create original posts that serve the audience
Build posts around your own knowledge, perspective, demonstrations, or stories. Repeating topics that genuinely interest your audience can help establish what your account is about; superficial copying or reposting should not be treated as a dependable growth shortcut. The available official sources do not establish the details of Instagram’s current originality enforcement, so avoid assuming that any particular reposting practice is safe or rewarded.

Prioritize a useful or entertaining idea over volume. A clear explanation, a specific example, or a distinctive point of view is more likely to give a suitable visitor a reason to follow than content made only to chase a supposed algorithm trick.
Choose the format that fits the idea
Use Reels when movement, a demonstration, or a short narrative is central to the idea. Use another format when it communicates the information more clearly. Instagram’s creator guidance discusses Reels and their relationship to reach and follower growth, but that does not establish that Reels are best for every account, subject, or post.

Instagram announced its Best Practices area in the Professional Dashboard on October 1, 2024. Meta said it covers creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines, with personalized tips. Creation topics include posting frequency, capturing attention, Reels length, trending audio, and hashtags. Reply to relevant comments and make space for conversations with people who care about your subject. Ask a specific question when it fits the post, rather than adding a generic prompt to every caption. These are sound ways to build relationships with an intended audience; they are not guaranteed ranking hacks.

Use insights to decide what to make next
Review the reach and engagement information available to your account, then look for patterns that help you serve your audience better. Consider which topics and formats prompt meaningful responses or bring the right people to your profile. Repeat what works for your purpose and revise what does not, rather than following generic rules that promise a fixed result.
Meta says the Professional Dashboard’s Best Practices area includes personalized tips and metric guidance. The specific tools and recommendations available to you may vary or change, so rely on the information shown in your account rather than assuming every creator sees the same options. Understand what Instagram’s algorithm explanation does—and doesn’t—say
Meta describes ranking as personalized and based on multiple predictions about what a person may find valuable. One example it gives is predicting whether someone may share a post; it also says no single prediction is a perfect measure of value. Its explanation covers Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore, and recommended content. That account is a high-level explanation, not a published recipe with stable ranking weights or a guaranteed route to followers.
The explanation was published June 29, 2023, so it should not be treated as a complete account of Instagram’s ranking behavior in 2026. Open the Professional Dashboard in Instagram and review the Best Practices and account guidance available to you. The area Meta announced includes guidance across creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines. Feature availability and recommendations can change; the cited announcement does not establish every current eligibility rule or detail for 2026. Use the in-app information shown for your account rather than relying on an old checklist.
