Instagram’s Edits app is adding a conversational AI assistant that can analyze a creator’s Instagram performance and help generate ideas. Announced on September 30, 2026, Edits Assistant is positioned as an analysis and brainstorming aid—not an automatic video maker or replacement for the editor.
What is Edits Assistant?
Edits Assistant is an AI feature inside Edits, Meta’s video creation and editing app. The assistant is intended to make account-specific observations by considering performance signals alongside audience feedback and interests, rather than offering only generic creator advice. TechCrunch reported the announcement on September 30, 2026; Android Central covered it on October 1.

Meta introduced Edits as a video creation app in April 2025. Its announcement said creators could share directly to Instagram and Facebook, or export videos to post elsewhere without added watermarks. The assistant adds analysis and ideation to that workflow; it is not described as taking over video editing. Meta’s Edits introduction explains the app’s original purpose.

According to Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, the assistant can draw on account metrics including follows, views, video retention, likes and shares, as well as comments, Instagram trends and what the audience is interested in. Westervelt told TechCrunch that it can identify patterns in performance over time and surface insights that may be difficult to spot from the metrics alone.

That context is meant to help a creator interpret what is happening—not just report a number. For example, a creator might use it to explore why videos are getting different responses or ask, “What should I make next?” That wording describes a natural ideation use case; Meta has not confirmed it as a specific built-in prompt.
What does it do—and what stays with the creator?
The announced role is analysis and brainstorming: help creators spot patterns, understand audience response and develop ideas. Westervelt told TechCrunch that creators wanted a tool “that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them.” The reporting describes creators as retaining creative decisions. Edits Assistant should therefore be understood as a source of suggestions, not a guarantee of performance or a system that automatically produces a finished video.

Is Edits Assistant available, and does it cost extra?
The launch coverage announces the feature, but the available information does not establish which countries or account types can use it, the required app version, or any assistant-specific usage limits. Those practical access details should not be assumed from the announcement alone.
Meta has said that a planned Meta One subscription tier called Edits Plus will include additional use of the upcoming Edits assistant and more cloud storage for syncing and accessing projects across devices. Meta’s September 15, 2026 announcement describes that plan as part of Meta One. It does not establish an Edits Plus price, release date, supported countries, usage allowance or current signup availability, so Edits Plus should not be treated as a currently purchasable plan based on that announcement.

What is not yet clear about data and privacy?
The assistant’s described context includes account performance metrics, comments, trends and audience interests. The launch reporting does not specify assistant-specific data retention, privacy controls, or how creators can manage which information the feature uses. Creators who need those details should look for Meta’s applicable in-app disclosures and privacy information rather than infer settings from the feature description.

Edits Assistant is most relevant after a creator has published enough content to have performance and audience signals worth examining. A useful workflow is to use its observations to form a question or testable idea, then make the creative choices and edits in the usual way. The assistant’s analysis can inform that process; the announcement does not establish that it can edit footage or ensure a particular result.
