Treat each AI agent as a distinct, least-privilege identity—not as a person’s account or a place to store passwords. Keep raw credentials out of prompts, model memory, and broadly accessible logs. Have a trusted runtime or consuming service provide narrowly scoped, preferably short-lived access for the task, then monitor and test how the agent can use that access.
Why shouldn’t credentials go in prompts or memory?
Model context is not a secure credential store. Prompts, retrieved documents, tool responses, memory, configuration, environment variables, and protocol logs can all become places where secrets persist or are exposed. OWASP’s MCP Top 10 item MCP01:2025 warns about credential exposure through these channels and recommends ephemeral contexts for credential operations, runtime injection, and redaction of logs and telemetry.

Keep live credentials outside model-visible content wherever the architecture allows. If the agent needs to perform an authenticated action, let it select an allowed operation or connector; a trusted execution boundary should handle authentication. The model should receive the result it needs, not the credential used to obtain it.

Give each agent or workload a distinct identity with its own credentials and entitlements. Bind its rights to the user or system operating it and to the relevant task context. NIST’s 2026 article on agent identity argues that agents need their own unique identifiers, credentials, and associated entitlements. Reusing a person’s broad account can blur accountability and let an agent act as that person.

For delegated enterprise access, established mechanisms discussed by NIST include OAuth 2.0, SPIFFE, Rich Authorization Requests, Transaction Tokens, and AuthZen. These are mechanisms to consider, not one settled, universal standard for agent identity; the standards and implementations are still developing.
How should an agent receive access to a secret?
Use a trusted runtime, connector, broker, or consuming service to retrieve and use the credential. OWASP’s MCP guidance recommends runtime injection and describes consumer-side retrieval patterns, where the service that consumes a secret retrieves it directly rather than passing it through an orchestrator or pipeline. A secrets-management system can help store, scope, rotate, and attribute access; examples named in OWASP’s secrets-management guidance include AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault, Google Secret Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Conjur, and Keeper.

Prefer short-lived, task- or session-scoped credentials over long-lived static tokens. Where feasible, dynamic secrets reduce credential reuse. Set the credential to expire or revoke it when the task ends, and rotate or invalidate it after suspected exposure. A vault or broker is not a complete safeguard on its own: a component that can retrieve a secret and send it elsewhere may still misuse it.

Grant only the access required for a particular agent, tool, resource, action, and session. Separate read and write rights when that reduces risk, avoid broad wildcard tool permissions, and set an expiry. Keep access attributable so operators can determine which agent used which permission and when. OWASP’s agent guidance calls for minimizing tools and scoping permissions per tool; NIST discusses delegated authorization and granular scopes.

Do not let model-generated text make the final authorization decision. Enforce policy in the trusted execution layer, validate tool arguments, and require independent authorization or approval for high-impact or irreversible actions. External content—including websites, emails, retrieved documents, tool output, and messages from other agents—can contain instructions intended to redirect the agent. NIST’s January 2025 technical blog describes this agent-hijacking risk as indirect prompt injection that can cause unintended, harmful actions.
How should context, memory, and logs be protected?
- Treat user input, retrieved material, tool responses, and inter-agent messages as untrusted; do not treat instructions found in them as authorization.
- Isolate memory by user and session, review sensitive data before saving it, and apply expiration limits.
- Redact secrets before writing logs or telemetry, and prevent credential operations from leaving sensitive data in persistent context.
- Keep live credentials and customer data out of security-test fixtures.
These controls reduce accidental persistence and exposure; they do not replace narrow permissions, execution-layer enforcement, or monitoring.

How do the design choices compare?
| Area | Weaker pattern | Stronger pattern to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Reuse a user’s broad credentials | Distinct agent identity with delegated, attributable rights |
| Credential duration | Long-lived static token | Short-lived or dynamic task- or session-scoped credential |
| Secret boundary | Place a raw secret in prompts, memory, or broadly exposed tool context | Use trusted runtime retrieval or consumer-side access while keeping the raw secret out of model context |
| Permission and audit | Broad scope with unclear ownership | Narrow resource and action scope, expiry, attribution, rotation, and monitored use |
The stronger pattern is a design direction, not a guarantee. Any component allowed to retrieve or use a credential can still be abused if its tools, authorization checks, or outbound data controls are too broad.

How should teams test agent credential controls?
Use repeatable adversarial cases that check both the expected denial and the observed behavior. NIST recommends task-specific, adaptive evaluation and trying multiple attempts; OWASP’s agent guidance identifies risks such as prompt override, unauthorized tools, privilege escalation, memory poisoning, data exfiltration, recursive tool abuse, approval bypass, and multi-agent chaining.

- Try to make the agent reveal a secret through a response, tool call, memory write, or log.
- Attempt an unauthorized tool call, broader access than the task needs, or a high-impact action without required approval.
- Test whether malicious retrieved content or another agent can redirect the task or poison persistent memory.
- Record the tested agent version, tool policy, retrieval setup, abuse cases, and observed allow-or-deny outcomes.
Keep these cases as regression tests. Do not ship changes to high-risk scopes or approval logic without evidence that the relevant denials still hold.
