You can inspect a GLB in the browser without Blender by using three Khronos tools for different jobs: the glTF Validator checks file and mesh-data issues, the glTF Asset Auditor reports triangle counts against a chosen profile, and the glTF Sample Viewer lets you load and visually inspect the model. The Validator can flag non-normalized normals, but that does not mean it draws normal vectors over the mesh.
How do I inspect a GLB in the browser without Blender?
A GLB can contain glTF JSON and its binary data in one file. In glTF 2.0, buffers hold binary data, buffer views describe ranges within those buffers, and accessors provide typed access to mesh attributes such as positions and normals. Browser tools can read this structure to validate data, report geometry counts, and render the model without a desktop 3D application. See the glTF 2.0 specification.

- Run a conformance check: Open the Khronos glTF Validator and drop in the GLB. Khronos says validation runs locally in the browser and submitted assets are not uploaded.
- Review mesh-data findings: Check the report for errors and warnings, including findings about non-normalized normal vectors. Treat these as data-quality results, not as a rendered normal visualization.
- Measure geometry for its intended use: Load the file in the Khronos glTF Asset Auditor, choose or create a relevant Audit Profile, and inspect its reported triangle, mesh, and material counts.
- Inspect the rendered model: Open the official Khronos glTF Sample Viewer and drag the GLB into it. Use its file statistics and debug channels for visual review.
These tools are complementary: the Validator focuses on conformance and data checks, the Auditor compares an asset with a profile, and the Viewer helps examine the rendered result.
How can I check GLB mesh normals online?
What the Validator can tell you
The glTF Validator checks mesh data and can identify non-normalized normal vectors. A report like this points to a property of the stored data; it does not establish how the model will look in every renderer, nor does it show that a visual defect was caused by normals.

What it does not establish
The documented capabilities do not establish that the Validator or Sample Viewer provides an overlay that draws normal directions as lines or colors on the mesh. Use the Validator to check normal data, and use the Viewer to inspect the rendered asset and its available debug channels. Do not treat a normal-data warning as a substitute for a dedicated normal-direction visualization.
How do I see the polygon or triangle count of a GLB?
Use the Asset Auditor and select a profile that reflects the asset’s destination. Its report can include actual triangle, mesh, and material counts, which lets you assess geometry alongside other asset characteristics. Interpret the triangle count against the application’s own performance and delivery requirements rather than a universal cutoff.

Khronos’s 2023 example profile uses a maximum of 30,000 triangles and a maximum file size of 3 MB for a hypothetical web AR app designed for fast loading. Those figures illustrate a use-case-specific profile; they are not general GLB limits or recommended targets for every project. File size and triangle count describe different constraints: a compact file can still contain geometry that is too dense for a particular application.

What each browser tool is best for
| Tool | Best-supported use | Relevant capabilities | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| glTF Validator | Conformance and mesh-data checks | Accepts glTF and GLB in the browser; can detect non-normalized normals | Does not establish a normal-vector overlay. Its file-URI workflow cannot access resources in directories. |
| glTF Asset Auditor | Checking an asset against a delivery profile | Configurable Audit Profiles; actual triangle, mesh, and material counts; local browser processing | Profile thresholds depend on the intended use case. |
| glTF Sample Viewer | Loading and visually reviewing a model | Drag-and-drop glTF/GLB, file statistics, integrated validation, and debug channels | Its README documents unsupported 64-bit mesh attributes and skins in its WebGL 2.0 implementation. |
What to do if the file does not load or the results look incomplete
- You are validating a .gltf with external resources: The Validator’s documented file-URI workflow cannot access resources in directories. A self-contained GLB avoids that particular directory-resource issue.
- The viewer’s rendering or statistics do not reflect an attribute: The Sample Viewer README lists limitations for 64-bit mesh attributes and skins in its WebGL 2.0 implementation. A viewer limitation is not, by itself, proof that the source asset is invalid.
- The model looks wrong despite valid normal data: A normalized-normal check does not explain every shading artifact. Use the report as one diagnostic, then inspect the rendered asset and other relevant mesh data.
- The triangle count seems high or low: Compare it with the performance and delivery targets for the actual application. Do not infer file size, rendering speed, or universal suitability from triangle count alone.
