If a trading-engine dashboard says WAIT, a trace should show whether the spread check ran and returned false or whether no spread observation was recorded at all. Those are different facts: one is a negative result; the other is missing evidence.
What does false mean in a decision trace?
In this example’s contract, false means the Boolean check ran and its condition was not met. A missing spreadAllowed key means the observation was not recorded. A trace that treats both cases alike cannot tell an investigator whether the engine evaluated the spread condition or lacked the input.

null is invalid under this narrow contract. It is neither a negative result nor an acceptable substitute for a missing key. If a production system needs to represent an unavailable observation, define that state explicitly and record a reason—for example, distinguish “not received” from “measurement invalid”—rather than quietly overloading a Boolean.

How should a validator preserve false?
Do not use a truthiness check such as if (!value) to validate a required Boolean. That condition is true both when the value is false and when it is absent or otherwise falsy, so it can discard a legitimate negative result. Check the key’s presence and then its type.

It also requires a features object with own sessionOpen and spreadAllowed properties whose values are Booleans. The ownership check prevents an inherited property from being mistaken for an observation in the trace itself.

This is an example contract, not a complete schema for every system. In production, define the expected shape and any allowed unavailable states explicitly; do not let a permissive parser silently convert absent, null, or malformed values into false.
What evidence makes a trace useful later?
Record the input snapshot at decision time
Capture the decision’s input snapshot when the decision is made. Reconstructing it later from a current chart or revised data feed can produce values that no longer describe what the engine saw at the time. The trace should preserve the actual observations associated with that decision, including whether each required observation was present.

Keep version references and underlying evidence distinct
A code-version or configuration-version string is a reference, not proof. A string alone does not establish that the referenced build exists, that its contents match the label, or that the named configuration was actually running. An investigation system needs a way to resolve those references to retained build and configuration evidence.
Do not overwrite the decision with later events
Keep the decision, submitted order request, and observed fill as separate records linked by identifiers. They represent different events. Replacing a decision status with an order or fill status erases the sequence investigators need to understand what happened.

How can you check the trace contract?
Use a small set of cases to verify that validation distinguishes false from missing. The reported example tests cover acceptance of false and rejection of an omitted feature, null, and an empty configuration version; the article author reports that four tests passed locally. This result applies only to the example validator, not to a trading strategy, broker integration, or production trace pipeline. Arnold Holm’s article describes the example and its limits.

- Change the configuration reference and check whether the investigation tools display the changed version and can resolve it to the relevant evidence.
These are suggested checks for the example contract, not a claim that the procedure was independently run. For JavaScript projects, Node.js’s v26.10.0 test-runner documentation describes the built-in node:test module and marks the runner stable; that tooling documentation does not verify this validator or any production system.
