Tesco’s Bengaluru operation contributes technology, analytics and operational capabilities to retail work across the group. It is a significant global capability center—not a standalone system that controls all of Tesco’s data or makes every retail decision. The “data engine” in this article is a description of that role, not Tesco’s formal name for a product or platform.
How Bengaluru became part of Tesco’s global operation
Tesco says its Bengaluru operation was established in 2004 to standardize work and build centralized capabilities. The company describes the center as serving customers worldwide and colleagues across the group. In a company announcement whose publication date is not stated, Tesco lists 4,000+ colleagues across Tesco Bengaluru and Tesco Technology; that undated figure should not be read as a verified current Bengaluru headcount. The center’s role extends beyond administrative support. In a January 2024 interview, Prakash Mall, then Director of Engineering at Tesco Technology, described capabilities across parts of the retail value chain, including product and supplier management, demand forecasting, tills, trade planning, fulfilment, online functions and data science and machine-learning engineering. Mall said, “A big part of service and operations is managed from the India centre.” Dataquest interview, January 2024
Tesco’s newer group-wide figures provide context, but not a site-level breakdown: its preliminary results published April 16, 2026, say the technology team had grown to more than 6,000 experts over six years, based in the UK, Ireland, Central Europe and Bengaluru. That is the whole technology team, not the Bengaluru workforce alone. Tesco PLC preliminary results, April 16, 2026

Where data and technology support retail decisions
The examples below show how Tesco has described its capabilities at different points in time. The 2024 interview offers detail on specific areas; the 2026 results describe newer group-level AI initiatives. Neither source maps every capability to a named Bengaluru team or quantifies its effect on business outcomes.
| Decision area | Reported examples | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Merchandising and availability | Product and supplier management, demand forecasting, trade planning, pricing and promotion optimization, clearance and range optimization | Examples described in the 2024 interview; no performance uplift or forecast-accuracy figure was reported. |
| Supply chain and fulfilment | Transport and fulfilment optimization; AI to identify external supply-chain risks and opportunities | Optimization examples came from the 2024 interview. The 2026 results describe the risk-identification work at group level and say it helps commercial teams make earlier decisions. |
| Customer experience | Online search, product listings, baskets, personalized rewards and recommendations, and the shopping journey across channels | Capabilities and examples described in the 2024 interview; the source does not establish that every example remains in the same form today. |
| Store operations and waste | Forecasting and algorithms for food waste, and automated markdowns for fresh goods | Described in the 2024 interview. Tesco’s 2026 results also mention AI initiatives in markdown and waste routines, without assigning them to Bengaluru. |
| Finance and enterprise data | AI-led finance tools and an integrated, self-service business-wide data hub | Described in Tesco’s 2026 results as initiatives being implemented; completion and quantified outcomes are not stated. |
What the examples reveal about the operating model
These capabilities span several kinds of decision support. Forecasting estimates what customers may need; optimization helps evaluate choices such as price, range, transport or fulfilment; and reporting or data tools give teams access to information. Tesco’s 2026 results describe AI tools for specific tasks and a broader self-service data hub, but do not explain the hub’s architecture or say that it replaces other systems.

The practical significance is that data work can connect commercial planning, supply operations, stores and digital shopping rather than sitting in one reporting function. The sources describe Bengaluru as contributing capabilities across these areas, but do not specify which individual global decisions are made there, how authority is divided among teams, or the causal impact of each capability.

In the January 2024 Dataquest interview, Mall said forecasting and markdown processes supported Tesco’s handling of surplus food. He reported that 89 per cent of food surplus donations went to more than 7,000 charities, equivalent in his wording to two million meals a month. This is an executive’s statement in that interview, not an independently validated or current statistic. Dataquest interview, January 2024

What remains unclear
- Tesco’s public statements do not show that Bengaluru is the sole center for data or technology work; its 2026 technology team spans four regions.
- The sources do not disclose a detailed data architecture, identify the teams responsible for each global decision, or measure the business impact of the named capabilities.
- The specific analytics examples in the 2024 interview are dated descriptions. Tesco’s 2026 results provide newer group-level context, but do not confirm that every 2024 example remains active in exactly the same form.
