Inside RustChain Attestation: How Six Hardware Checks Support Its “1 CPU = 1 Vote” Model

RustChain says six hardware-behavior checks help distinguish physical miners from VMs and emulators. Here’s how those checks relate to its baseline one-CPU-one-vote model and antiquity-based rewards.

RustChain says it uses six hardware-behavior checks to assess whether a miner is a physical machine rather than a virtual machine or emulator. In its model, “1 CPU = 1 vote” describes baseline participation; hardware antiquity changes reward weight. The checks and outcomes are described in RustChain’s own documentation, not independently verified security guarantees.

What “1 CPU = 1 vote” means in RustChain

RustChain’s Protocol Specification describes one CPU as the baseline unit of participation. It separately says that a machine’s hardware antiquity affects its reward weight. That distinction matters: the slogan is not a claim that every CPU receives identical rewards.

The same specification describes attestation as evidence that a machine is real enough to participate. It presents RustChain as distinct from traditional proof-of-work and typical proof-of-stake, but those labels alone do not establish how its security or decentralization compares with other consensus systems.

The six hardware checks RustChain advertises

RustChain’s FAQ names six check categories. Its API Reference shows example payload fields corresponding to these signals. Together, they describe what the project says it examines—not proof that any signal is unique to a physical CPU or impossible to imitate.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  1. Clock skew and oscillator drift: The API example includes clock-skew drift and jitter, intended to capture timing behavior.
  2. Cache-timing tone: Example fields record L1 and L2 cache latencies, which may reflect differences in memory hierarchy and access timing.
  3. SIMD identity: The payload includes the instruction set and pipeline-bias fields, describing vector-instruction characteristics.
  4. Thermal-drift entropy: Idle and load temperatures and temperature variance appear in the example, representing changes associated with operating conditions.
  5. Instruction jitter: The reference includes instruction-jitter statistics as another source of behavioral variation.
  6. Anti-emulation behavior: The examples include behavioral checks such as whether a hypervisor is detected.

The Protocol Specification puts the intended role succinctly: “Attestation proves the machine is real enough to participate.” That is RustChain’s description of its design, not an independent validation of the checks’ accuracy.

How the API describes attestation outcomes

The API Reference illustrates a successful attestation response that includes enrollment and a multiplier. It also shows an example response for a detected VM and a conflict response when hardware is already bound. These examples document intended API behavior; they are not a comprehensive test of rejection rates or resistance to spoofing.

RustChain’s Protocol Specification says VMs and emulators are expected to fail at least one check or produce low-confidence behavior. That is the project’s stated threat model. The documentation reviewed here does not include an independent audit or reproducible third-party measurements establishing a zero-bypass rate or showing that the fingerprints cannot be spoofed.

What hardware can mine RustChain, and what is the minimum?

RustChain’s undated FAQ says “almost any real machine” can mine, subject to its physical-hardware requirement, and lists PowerPC G3, G4, and G5 families. It does not establish guaranteed compatibility for every model. Operating-system support, the current miner release, and the machine’s condition and configuration all matter in practice.

The FAQ gives a 2003 PowerBook G4 as an example and states a 2.5× multiplier for PowerPC G4 hardware. This is a project-published figure, not a guarantee for every G4 configuration or a reason on its own to buy a particular vintage computer. Check current eligibility and device-specific support before relying on a machine for mining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can RustChain’s six checks prove that a miner is a physical CPU?

RustChain describes the checks as evidence for physical-machine participation, but the documentation cited here does not independently establish that the signals are unique, unforgeable, or sufficient to prove physical hardware.
