You can generate a branded invoice PDF in a Cloudflare Worker and return it directly to the requester without writing the PDF to an R2 bucket. The flow is: build invoice HTML, call Cloudflare Browser Run’s /pdf endpoint through a Worker binding, then return the generated bytes with PDF response headers. This avoids an R2 object write; it does not guarantee that the requester, browser, logs, or other services keep no copy.
How the request-to-download flow works
- Create the invoice as HTML. Populate a template with your business identity, logo, typography, invoice number and date, customer details, itemized charges, tax, totals, and payment instructions.
- Send the HTML to Browser Run. Call Cloudflare Browser Run’s
/pdfendpoint from the Worker using the documented Workers Binding integration. The endpoint can render custom HTML or a webpage into a PDF. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation. - Return the generated PDF. Treat the endpoint’s output as the Worker response body and set response metadata appropriate for a PDF download. The exact header values are an implementation choice; the cited Browser Run documentation does not prescribe them.
- Skip the R2 write. Do not call the R2 object-writing API when the goal is to avoid persistent object storage. R2 is an optional storage path, not a requirement for returning the response. Cloudflare R2 Workers API reference.
This is an architecture outline, not a complete invoice template: Cloudflare’s example demonstrates PDF rendering and presentation options, but does not validate a full billing layout. Your Worker still needs to validate inputs, produce the HTML, handle rendering errors, and form the HTTP response.

Choose what Browser Run should render
Submit custom HTML
Custom HTML gives the Worker direct control over invoice content and branding. It is a natural fit when the invoice is generated from application data and does not already exist as a public or authenticated webpage. Keep user-provided values escaped and ensure the generated markup includes the styles and assets needed for rendering.

If the invoice already exists as a webpage, Browser Run can render that page instead. The page must be reachable and render correctly in the headless browser context. Consider authentication, access to fonts and images, and whether the page can expose the invoice to anyone who obtains its URL.

Add branding, headers, footers, and page numbers
Build the business identity and invoice content into the HTML and CSS: use the company name and logo, a consistent typeface and color palette, clearly labeled invoice details, itemized line entries, tax, a prominent amount due, and payment instructions. Check long customer names, large item tables, and page breaks so that the output remains readable.
Cloudflare’s Browser Run PDF example also shows PDF options for an A5 page, a branded header, a footer message, and page numbering. These options can complement the invoice’s own HTML styling; they do not replace designing and checking the invoice layout. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation.

What “without keeping the files” does—and does not—mean
In this design, the Worker does not save the generated PDF as an R2 object. That is a narrow application-storage claim, not an end-to-end promise that no copy exists. The recipient can download or retain the response, and the behavior of browsers, caches, logs, observability tools, and downstream services depends on how those systems are configured.

Keep rendering within Worker resource limits
Cloudflare’s Workers Limits page, last updated September 5, 2026, lists 128 MB of memory. It lists CPU time as 10 ms on the Free plan and 5 minutes on the Paid plan, and says HTTP response bodies have “No enforced limit.” These are platform limits, not a guarantee that a particular Browser Run render will complete within your Worker’s resources. Check the current limits for your plan before deployment. Cloudflare Workers Limits.
The same limits guidance recommends streaming request and response bodies to reduce memory pressure and cautions against holding large payloads in memory. That matters if the Worker buffers a large PDF or invoice input rather than passing data through efficiently. Measure the actual workflow with your fonts, images, HTML, and longest expected invoice; response-size allowance alone does not remove CPU or memory constraints. Cloudflare Workers Limits.

When to return the PDF and when to save it

For a direct response, make the requester’s access model explicit and avoid logging invoice contents or PDF bytes unless there is a defined operational need. For a stored design, establish who can retrieve the object and how long it should remain available. Those are application decisions, not guarantees made by the PDF endpoint.
