Building 8 was Facebook’s research and product-development team, created in 2016 to turn ambitious science into social-first consumer products. Led by former DARPA director Regina Dugan, it announced striking goals—including typing by silently formed speech signals and delivering language through the skin—but those were research aims, not capabilities users could buy. Contemporaneous reporting said the team had released no products when Dugan left in October 2017.
What was Facebook’s Building 8?
Building 8 was a Facebook team, not a public-facing building, consumer brand, or product. At F8 in 2017, Facebook described it as a product-development and research team focused on “creating and shipping new, category-defining consumer products that are social first” and advancing the company’s mission. The ambition was to connect research to products that could reach Facebook’s users at scale.

The name carried a deliberate signal: Facebook wanted an organization that could pursue technically difficult work with the urgency of a product group. In 2016, the company brought in Regina Dugan, who had led the U.S. Defense Department’s DARPA and Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. Forbes reported that Facebook committed hundreds of millions of dollars to the effort.

Building 8’s innovation model combined scientific ambition with product development. Rather than treating research as open-ended laboratory work, the approach emphasized fixed, ambitious programs and a path toward making the resulting technology into a product. Facebook said the group would use an innovation engine modeled on DARPA.

- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can easily be heard.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- Designed for the home. With a sleek picture frame design, quick setup and intuitive voice and touchscreen controls, Portal fits easily and seamlessly into your home.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
- Big technical goals: pursue advances that could enable a new kind of consumer product, even when the underlying science was not yet product-ready.
- Deadlines and delivery: apply program timelines and product-development discipline instead of leaving research entirely open-ended.
- External collaboration: work with university researchers as well as internal teams.
- Social-first applications: aim to integrate new technology into ways people communicate and connect, rather than focus only on standalone research instruments.
This approach made Building 8 both a research lab and a product bet. The harder question was whether a technical breakthrough could meet the reliability, safety, and manufacturing demands of a consumer device.
What did Building 8 announce at F8 2017?
At Facebook’s F8 developer conference in 2017, Dugan introduced two of the group’s most ambitious lines of work: interpreting intended speech from brain activity and delivering language through the skin. Facebook presented both as projects under development, not finished products.

| Project | Announced goal | What was established at the time |
|---|---|---|
| Brain-computer interface | Facebook’s stated goal was a non-invasive, wearable system that could type 100 words per minute directly from brain signals—five times the smartphone typing speed cited by the company at F8 2017. | That speed was a target, not a demonstrated consumer capability. Time reported in 2017 that the sensors needed to measure brain activity through hair, skin, and skull with the required speed and accuracy did not yet exist. |
| Language through the skin | Facebook said it was building the hardware and software necessary to deliver language through the skin. | The F8 statement described a research goal; it did not establish a released device or a consumer-ready system. |
Could Facebook really let people type with their brains?
The idea was to detect speech a person had silently formed and chosen to communicate, not to read arbitrary thoughts. Facebook’s public framing was “What if you could type directly from your brain?” The company proposed non-invasive sensors rather than a surgically implanted interface, with the long-term aim of making the technology wearable and manufacturable at scale.
But the headline figure—100 words per minute—described Facebook’s target. Time’s 2017 account stressed the gap between that ambition and the sensors then available. The public announcement therefore showed what Building 8 hoped to solve, not that it had solved it.

How large was the effort, and who worked with it?
TechCrunch reported in 2017 that a 60-person team was working on the brain-computer interface. Its account described optical imaging intended to detect speech silently formed by a person. Reporting also described participation by university researchers; ethics coverage named UC Berkeley and Johns Hopkins among Facebook’s university partners.
Facebook also discussed oversight for the ethical, legal, and social implications of brain-interface research, including plans for an independent ELSI panel. That mattered because a system designed to infer intended words raises questions about privacy, consent, and consequences if the technology is misunderstood or used beyond its original purpose.

- Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
- Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
- Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
- Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
- Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback
What happened to Building 8?
In October 2017, TheWrap reported that Dugan was leaving Facebook after less than two years and that Building 8 had released no products to that point. Its portfolio included work spanning augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, as well as a tentative video-chat device called Aloha. The contemporaneous record thus shows a broad experimental portfolio, but no flagship consumer product released by the group during Dugan’s tenure.

The evidence available from its 2016 launch through the 2017 transition documents the goals and the effort, but does not establish what organizational form, if any, continued afterward.
